I just cleared the Taurus Demon, and am having a great time. I am so psyched I managed to beat the asylum demon with just the sword hilt. Now I have a hammer I will never use, but it was super exciting to beat that beast. I know I am just at the beginning, but this is already a really fun game. I can't wait to start finding some good Dex weapons.

arrived in Anor Londo...the locations are all smaller than i remembered...Sen´s for example is a cakewalk if you know the way

last words on "Dark vs Demon´s" from me: i played Boletarian Palace in NG+ in Demon´s an hour ago to compare directly and it is true, Demon´s feels like the newer game than Dark: animation system is better, everything is MUCH faster and in my opinion it feels more relentless than Dark´s slowness...and i like the hazy, dreamy look much more in comparison to the clean look of the Dark remaster...

not to mention the sicker atmosphere, Boletarian Palace immediately has me thinking that some dark, twisted secret lies ahead whereas Undead Burg comes over as a more "friendly" version of Boletarian Palace where it seems the hellkite dragon is the big enemy and nothing more. Demon´s is the ultimate Souls game blueprint, period.

Sony must bring it back alone for the sake that more people can play it...it feels so much fresher and modern in comparison to Dark, it is no contest for me. the interconnected world has it´s merits in Dark but i like the arcadey "port from the hub to the world and back" better, there is no backtracking and running around the place back and forth, you port yourself directly into the action.

and while world tendency might be obscure and convoluted for others i personally love the system, it encourages multiple playthroughs from the get go because you see hidden content that way (pure white, pure black and you must do things to achieve those states).

Having never played any Soul's game on release, it was nuts just seeing this many summon signs in one place -

I love it! Jolly coop is my favorite part of any Souls game. I'm thinking of trying Dark Souls 3 again after I finish this, but unfortunately I doubt I'll get to play much online on PC.

I fell in the damn sewers and got cursed

In my 500+ hours of Dark Souls I've managed to escape being cursed. All good things must come to an end

I'm running a Longsword +4. Is that bad?

On my first two runs of this game (neither of which I finished), I went from Undead Parish to Darkroot Garden. I must've never actually read the description of the key you get from the Gargoyles.

I don't remember getting a key from the gargoyles. Also, when should you do Darkroot? I tried to do it BEFORE the gargoyles first, and now I'm trying to do it after.

Well, getting cursed is horseshit. Gotta treck all the way back up to the bell tower from the depths. This game really isn't as good as Bloodborne...

... But I still love it.

I fell in last night having completely forgotten my way around the depths. Avoided all of the basilisks like a pro.

Got ganked by a group of rats at the end.

Is it just me who really dislikes these remasters of late? They're too noisy. There's too much detail and stuff to obfuscate the action.

Watching a friend play the PS4 version but definitely more convinced to get on Switch because of the lower power.

I still don't quite understand the scaling system. Like for example, the Battle Axe has C and D in scaling (strength and dex). The damage output for my Battle Axe is 95, but when I level up my Strength shouldn't that number increase?

95 is the raw physical damage. If you look at the detailed information, there's a +number next to it, which is the damage gained from scaling.

Regarding weapons - spoiler free:
You can't really go wrong. Scaling becomes more important from mid game on, base damage helps out a lot in the beginning.

If you want to upgrade beyond +5 you have to enter modify equipment when taking to the blacksmith.
If you haven't rung both bells, pick a weapon that you really like when going +6.

It can be useful to have a different range of weapons at +5 early, look at different damage types.

Don't forget to test the running attack move, it's very useful on bosses with short attack windows.

Twinkling titanite should be spent wisely early, don't upgrade shields with twinkling unless you have a non twinkling weapon you really like.

Longsword is just fine. Not the most damage or anything, but it's got good speed and doesn't drain stamina a ton. Fully upgraded longsword is viable the whole game. You just won't be doing truck hitting damage is all, but it's fine.

I've used it the whole game before

So what weapon should I be on the lookout for replacing the Drake Sword? I mostly like regular weapons and not great ones. Could you be upgrading the regular Battle Axe and still get a decent weapon out of that?
Farm the Balder knights for their Balder Side Sword. Amazing Dex weapon, great move set and has a ton of reach. Poke poke poke.

Yes. Find the weapon that you like it terms of moveset and upgrade that one. The scaling will do the rest.

What did you need to get to regular +15, again? Or at least +10, for starters. Gonna go for a regular +15 Large Club.

I'm glad you are liking the Large Club. You need 9 of each kind of upgrade material to reach the next tier. 9 Titanite Shards > 9 Large Titanite Shards > 9 Titanite Chunks > 1 Titanite Slab. You will also need the corresponding Ember (Large Ember, Very Large Ember) to reach the next tier.

Large Ember is in the depths. Damn it, thought I could just skip that area lol.

And yeah, the club is fantastic! I'm gonna have to look for a secondary weapon to use in tight spaces, but particularly in open space it's amazing.

Any suggestions for a secondary weapon, btw? Are there any regular swords or anything with solid STR scaling? Either way, something light and fast would be nice for those tiny spaces and fast enemies. I suppose I could put some points in DEX, too, why not.

e: Estoc seems perfect. Can stab-stab-stab from behind a shield.

Yeah I just looked it up and it was actually dropped somewhere in the Undead Parish.

I think you're supposed to do Darkroot after, because the enemies are significantly tougher than the ones in the parish.

I'm gonna go ahead and say all that "genius" level design that people have been praising for years is completely negated by that dumpster fire of a boss "arena" that is
Capra Demon

Like... what were they even thinking?

Try out the Claymore it's not super fast but it is great in tight spaces. The 2h slashes are vertical and it has a fantastic thrust attack. If you need something smaller and faster try the Club/Reinforced Club. You will get better STR scaling from the the Club but the Reinforced Club also inflicts bleed which is great. I prefer the Reinforced Club but both are good weapons, also their range is not the best so you will have to get right in there but both weapons do have a nice jump attack which has some good range.

The arena is a fundamental part of the boss fight, though. Fighting that boss in an open space with no other enemies would be a complete joke.

If the only hard thing about your boss fight is a gank corridor, then that speaks for itself.

Beat it after two more tries but come on... Running around in circles and just dropping on his head is just stupid.

Could anyone point me towards a resource with everything I need to know before jumping into this game? First Souls game I've played.

Absolutely not! Go in blind. So many of us wish we could go back and have the chance to discover this game and be surprised and confused by it for the first time again.

Just jump in dude. Fail, discover, and learn. That's what Souls is about.
