With an exclamation mark...
With a "New" label...
With an asterisk...
With a highlighted border...
With a "breathing" halo...

For every new item...
For every new weapon...
For every new armor...
For every new spell...
For every new codex or encyclopedia entry...

Fucking triggers my OCD!
Get that shit outta here!

It's a godsend for someone like me who likes to keep track of what tasks I've done, and what tasks I've yet to do.

The easier it is to find things that I've yet to give my attention to, the better.

Call of Duty WWII does this too. What's worse is it highlights a category and when you browse that category for the new item, it's not there so the highlight won't disappear.

The solution is not to remove this UX completely, but perhaps limit the flags to only legendary items.

Its fine to a point. If EVERYTHING is new, then its the same as marking nothing new. Almost wish there was a chronological list so I can see the most recent new stuff.

I only get annoyed when it's for stuff like encyclopedia entries and whatnot. With new items/gear it's good to know what I have that I didn't but I do get a little frustrated feeling like I have to go in and open and close a bunch of codex screens to get the 'new' indicator to go away.

I like it. I don't always keep track of what's new, so I welcome it.

Lol @ it "triggering your OCD" though. Maybe you're the problem.

Yeah it's really annoying, but it's been a thing going back at least 20 years.

There should be the ability to disable it or mark all as read.

The most annoying ones are where you can't just look at the item to get rid of the flag, you have to go to it and then wait a second before it'll process as 'read'.

Yea, it's really stupid if you need to do something overtly specific to make it recognize that you've looked at the item or if the game has tons and tons of cosmetic bullshit that you don't really need to pore over(Heroes of the Storm).

can be a bit useless and overused in some games i generally like it.

'utilitarian UI' is one of my favorite things about this gen/late last gen

A simple toggle would suffice. Left click the stick to highlight new items.

I like that, honestly--but then, I'm completely used to it, since the first RPGs I ever played - the KotORs, back when I was, like, nine or ten? - did it.

Can't anyone be bigger than this OCD lite they suffer from? Btw it's not OCD. PRAY YOU NEVER HAVE THAT.

Siege is the worst I have experienced for this because the flashing yellow dot above the "operators" section never disappears.

I kinda like it, though I would prefer if I don't have to browse every new goddamn thing so the highlight/marker goes away, just make them go away when I open and close the menu.

I don't mind it with inventory items (if its the first time acquiring said item) or a new ability unlock. But I hate it for tutorial items, codex/bestiary entries. You get so many and It just becomes annoying. A marker should only be used for something that I need to know about. An entry in the codex for a low level enemy that I had just beaten, or a note of a section of story that I had just played I don't need a marker for.

I try and try to get rid of the Exclamation Marks in Rocket League. Finally gave up. I mean it gives you a new notification for a duplicate for crying out loud. At one point I tried to get rid of them all in Battlefield 4. Gave up. At this point I'd like to say I'm willfully ignorant, but it still bugs the shit outta me. They make it such a pain in the ass to get rid of them it's not worth the time to do it anymore; as ridiculous as that sounds. Wasting time getting rid of exclamation marks... Something else.

Edit: To make things easier, just give us the options to turn the stuff off. I see that I've gotten a new item when it first pops up. I shouldn't have to go look at it a second time to get a bright, pulsating exclamation point to disappear from my screen.

The only use this has for me is if I pick up an item and accidentally skip the prompt telling me what it is.

Even then a seperate activity log or a simple "sort by: newest" would suffice.

Some games do go overboard with exclamation marks everywhere I agree.

They really need to have the "deselect all" option on every game because it's ridiculous to have to see that shit pretty much permanently and have to constantly action it.

I like it, it gives me a slight sense of accomplishment and growth whenever I go into a menu and see a visual reminder that I've acquired or achieved something new

I can't see why this is a bad thing.

It makes it easier for me to find the new items in my inventory.

Make it an option. Pillars of Eternity 2 highlights all new items. The issue is that there is way too much cruft and it makes it tedious for me to unhighlight everything by hovering over it.

How the fuck does that trigger OCD?

It was really bad in god of war, a freaking gazillion new blinking things every time I stopped by the shop. Some times I felt so overwhelmed I just walked away and did nothing with that new equipment/upgrades

I don't mind 'new' tags, just give me a simple 'mark all as seen' button or something similar. Having to highlight each and every single item is annoying for sure.

It annoyed me at the start of God of War because the game starts with e v e r y t h i n g flagged as new, which meant moving my cursor over every beginning skill and piece of unpowered starter equipment to wipe away the markers. Although after that, I liked it because I'd pick up some random trinket that would get buried 3 menus deep in my inventory, and the markers would help me find it again (oh what was that thing I picked up? a global enhancement in resources? or was a it a rune? was it for my belt armor or for the axe sockets? etc.)

I often find this highlighting completely useless as a lot of the time I tend not to trigger the requirement for removing this "new" status so half the menu is highlighted.

I really really hate this too. But no other genre exemplify this more than f2p mobage. Every day you log in you're bombarded with several exclamation marks and notifications and it's so overwhelming. There isn't even a way to turn these off.

Depending on how cluttered or extensive an inventory is, it's good UX. What you are looking for is for an option to disable the feature.
