Three men implicated in fatal Kansas swatting now face federal charges

Last December, 28-year-old Andrew Finch of Wichita, Kansas was shot and killed by police responding to false reports of a hostage situation at a local home. Tyler Barriss, of Los Angeles, was arrested by Kansas state authorities for allegedly making the prank call which led to Finch's death. Now, two additional men have been charged in the incident.

Shane Gaskill and Casey Viner, along with Barriss, now face federal charges for their alleged role in the swatting call. Viner is charged with "wire fraud, conspiracy to make false/hoax reports, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to obstruct justice." Gaskill is faced with "obstruction of justice, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and wire fraud."

I'd say throw the book, but let's be honest: We are in hopes that a 10 ten years worth of encyclopedias hit their mark. Swatting is an idiotic practice that should have stopped the moment someone thought it was a good idea and considering that one of these guys got away with dozens of bomb threats, I think it is fair to say that a slap on the wrist isn't going to cut it.

And then I read you comments how you actually rethink your current situation. How you wanna move. Maybe move. Makes me tear up and I won't lie. I grew up with America being the greatest (or at least having all the options). Today it actively keeps me from sending my resume from great companies like Blizzard which I just adore. I have other options, for sure. But this should not be what the world is right now.

I honestly don't know what you're trying to insinuate in this comment. This situation doesn't have anything to do with gun control really.. You say your police officers carry ak 47s? That's a big step up from the pistols our police carry around here.

I think swatting has more to do with the people calling in the threats than it does having a police force armed to the teeth. Now in this situation unfortunately an innocent lost his life so the callers should be prosecuted(which they currently are) and the police should be held accountable.

I am ashamed of how my country acts all the time, on race, on guns, on the military, on nationalism, etc. I won't hide from that, ever. I try my best to contribute to society by voting for certain candidates and going to rallies that preach peace and non-violence along with recognizing these core issues in our society.

Feeling pretty great. All in all, most of the country is doing well. I had dinner with my family in Forest Park, right off the lake. We had drinks and rode the paddle boats. Then we took a drive through a park where Elk and Bison roam around freely and come up to your car. This weekend we have some 20+ people coming over. I'm going to smoke some ribs and whole chickens, and then we're going for a dip in the pool. Have seen many minorities and police out and about around the park today. Everyone smiled and waved at each other. So thanks for checking in. There are 325mm of us here, and most of us have plenty opportunity to live happy lives without much issue.
