Been totally enjoying this game, so glad to see people playing this.
But sometimes I feel like MS PR is the walking embodiment of this

Thats pretty good given the I imagine relatively small budget. Also the gamepass profit is a lot closer to a boxed copy then a full priced title. Its also a game people will likely invest a lot of time into, so good potential for multiple months of gamepass.

It means over 1m players played the game in 2 days.

6 days. It's within 2 days of standard release (May 22), which was 4 days after Ultimate Edition (May 18).

Greenberg said:
Since Early Access for the Ultimate Edition on May 18 and the global release of the Standard Edition on May 22, we have had over a million survivors across the globe playing and creating their own zombie survival story.

That's a lot of beta testers. Seriously, it's hard to believe they launched this game in its current state. The game runs poorly even on X1X.

Me and the wife love the game but have put it on hold until they can release a patch to fix a chunk of the issues. We have had cars disappear into the ground while having materials loaded onto it so we lost those. She had all of her text start displaying only one letter out of every word regardless if it was talk from a character or when she was in her menus. NPC had just vanished in the middle of a conversation and spawn a long distance away for no reason. Plus the optimization of the game is terrible. So much lag in coop to a point where the game will just flat out stop for a second or two as it tries to load things in.

Its a mess of a game that I really hope they can get around to fixing cause we love absolutely everything about what its trying to do. Shame on microsoft for sending this game out in the state that its in cause this could be a real killer 1st party game if they actually treated it right.

Glad it's doing well. I had no interest in the game for being a zombie game but I tried it due to gamepass and I'm hooked with it. I particulary like that it runs on my laptop (albeit in potato mode).

You comparing sales with player numbers though. They aren't the same, one it definitely more impressive than the other.

That's just another thing people will need to get over. However you want to look at it, the game is doing well or Gamepass is.

If the majority came from Gamepass that is way more impressive than getting someone to spend $30 once.

I wonder if Microsoft will give us any metrics on Gamepass usage at E3. I love the concept so I hope it is doing well.

One million players is good. Even though MS published this it was a budget title. Cuphead took 2 weeks to sell a million copies at $20 across two platforms, with good reviews and good word of mouth.
And well deserved. 1 million for Cuphead is awesome.
LOL. First, this is not a AAA release.
Well Undead Labs said it's a AAA release. So I see it as a AAA release.
Okay, so your statement is: you think 1 million players two days after global release is not a good thing. Interesting to say the least. Obviously both me and - more importantly - Microsoft disagrees with your view, as they seem to be happy with the numbers. So happy in fact that they decided to push out a press release for that. Objectively speaking 1 million players after that short time period can't be a bad thing.

The next time you should maybe directly try to express your opinion - which is your right to have - without detailing a thread with personal and baseless comments.
Nah, I think I'm fine. Not much of a derail here imo. The topic is 1 million players for this game here. And my opinion is, it's not that good. Agree to disagree.
Cheers.

That's why they add new games every month.

That and post-launch support for games like SOT and SOD2. I don't think anyone is expecting either of these to be a game changer but some of you guys need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. New games will be added. Forza Horizon 3, Crackdown 3 will be there day one. MCC will likely be added later this year. The value of game pass will become more apparent over time.

Gamepass is a good idea.

Ideally, EVERY game would have a free trial. I long for the golden age of PC shareware and demos. Discovered so many great things I might have otherwise missed because of that, downloading heaps of new stuff from HappyPuppy lol. It was a site that hosted demos and such.

It's also a good thing this was a value purchase. There's absolutely room in the market for various price points than the $60 standard, and it's great to see another success in that area. SoT imho should have been $29, it really didn't hold up for me personally.

They could say this is a licensed Barbie game, doesn't mean it's true. Nowadays, AAA games are made with giant budgets by hundreds of developers, whereas Undead Labs has less than a hundred devs working on a far lower budget. It's not more triple-A than Hellblade or Ys.

I really do not understand this logic, at least with Quantum Break, since QB didn't even have any DLC. What would it have gained by having more Game Pass players, especially if that eroded in to actual retail sales? In that sense, the added exposure isn't really to their benefit.

More exposure, more word of mouth, bigger potential audience for sequels, and additional spending outside of the game itself (Quantum Break had the PC Collector's Edition, a tie-in novel, and an art book, in addition to t-shirts, Monarch coffee mugs and so on - for some games and series the potential for licensing is significantly larger).

In any case, it will be interesting going forward to see how Game Pass affects retail sales, eg if it adds to revenue and retail sales, or detracts from them, and whether DLC and microtransactions from a larger pool of players can compomsate for any potential loss in retail sales, if more and more people choose Game Pass over buying individual games.

Don't forget to add recurring subscription revenue to your calculations, although it's always going to be hard to tell (except maybe by looking at the overall quarterly division revenue). By gaining access to certain games through subscription, players may become more likely to increase spending elsewhere (either buying other games, additional content, consumables, licensed products...). Personally, I spent my trial on Sea of Thieves, but then I bought the lore book and the art book (I'll also get the comic book once its finished and collected), and I decided to keep subscribing because of cheap access to a whole bunch of games that I would probably not outright buy otherwise. I still bought the Ultimate Edition of State of Decay 2 since I knew that I'd be playing it for a while, and because of the included expansions.

Game Pass is Netflix not World of Warcraft. Just how long does a 2 hour Netflix original movie keep you engaged?
How long does take to make content for Neflix in comparison to Gamepass. Cost of making games is also more expensive than producing TV show.

I really don't see the point in these 'user' stats when it is effectively given away for free. Some will dabble, others will stick.

I dont follow anymore.

I'll help you out.

It means over 1m players played the game in 2 days.

6 days. It's within 2 days of standard release (May 22), which was 4 days after Ultimate Edition (May 18).

I am just quoting the article title.

Article title is actually "State of Decay 2 Breaks Record with Over 1 Million Players in First Two Days of Global Release"

What's difficult to understand? 6 days not 2 and selective quoting of the title (probably the way Greenberg hoped when he wrote it, tbh, not your fault).

Just because they say so does not make it so. I think there are some general agreement on what makes something AAA and SoD2 is not.
Well, Undead Labs said so. They are almost 100 peoplethere. So I'm gonna believe them. And it makes even sense. It's an AAA game.

Where was this given away for free?

Well, to gamepass members. I also consider PlayStation Plus games 'free' for the record. If you are a member, its at no extra cost when added. That kind of deal.

Skews the figures as people will always dabble with 'free' stuff. Doesn't tell anyone about genuine interest in the game etc.

Kind of like 'Riverdale' on Netflix. Would such numbers actually bother if they had to buy that on DVD? I'm not sure they would.
