Release the thing as normal, but also release the software package separately for PS4. Everyone's happy!

I'd prefer more classics on the store, with trophies and the handful of small touches that makes rebuying an older game a lot easier to justify. I'm currently replaying Final Fantasy IX, and it's really nice to turn on Speed Boost or Safe Encounters at times.

This would be great to see happen- but it'd be quite an expensive piece of kit for sure, for reasons that have long been discussed ITT. I'd be up for it, if only for round 2 of PS v N64 should Nintendo be following through with their classic line lol.

I'll just copy the complaints over from the Nintendo side of things and ask where the hell are the PS4-compatible PSOne classics?

yeah that's about as bad as the lack of Virtual Console on Switch to me :-/ I really hate that I can't play classics that I love on modern consoles (HDMI inputs are limited dammit >_<)

It would be an incredible little system- as long as it could connect to psn and be able to download games. However, that might make the cost rise astronomically. They have an opportunity to do something really special though.

The PS1's graphics have aged the worst out of any console's and I worry it'd be hard to go back and play some of those games because of them, unlike other systems for whatever reason. Also some of them had terrible controls like Tomb Raider.

I'd maybe buy it depending on what's on offer. If a Tony Hawk game was then for sure. But I'd rather an N64 classic.

Real question though is this? Would it include a dual shock controller, or the original og controller.

If its dual shock, then its not the same.

Completely disagree. The n64 graphics have aged by far the worst. All those games with stretched textures and muddy graphics. Ugghhhhh

I want Harvest Moon Back to Nature so I can gift it to my sister. We used to play the game together a lot.

And maybe Rival School.

I'd perfer one to an N64 classic in all honesty

(mostly cause I haven't played a lot of the PS1 classics)
(also cause I can't justify 70£ for a Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time machine with a bad controller)

The PS1 can use ps1 from disc (obviously), the ps2 can run ps1 disc natively, any ps3 can run any ps1 game from disc too, ps4? Just add the ability to run those disc from the ps4 and we can avoid a ps1 mini. And allow the people to download the game they have already bought on the ps3 store, not like that shitty marketing move done with the ps2 games.

I don't understand people who want a PS1 Classic that plays discs... wouldn't you better off just getting a PS1?

I like Nintendo's approach of pre-loaded games + mini form. Sony could add value by making it able to connect to the internet to download more, if they wanted to.

But adding a disc drive essentially just makes it a PS1 re-model. I'll be buying this if they don't put a disc drive and make the form factor miniature.

Definitely. There are some games where the N64 limitations are ok, Mario Party, Mario 64, Star Wars Racer, a handful of others. But it's pretty rough, and the majority are foggy, blurry much.

PS1 otoh, while also absolutely dated, has some genuinely pretty 2d games, and a fair amount of pretty nice early 3d stuff. Tekken 3 alone is remarkable imho for the era.

To me 3D is where nostalgia stops. PS1 just looks like ugly 3D to me. Further, I cant really recall any classic games to me from that era. Yes even Mario 64, OOT, not that great IMO.

Just a bad gen all around IMO. As was the next. Things didn't start looking up IMO til 360 gen.

Having said all that, I'd still be interested in this thing just for check it out factor. I'm guessing costs starting to creep up though, so whats the MSRP here, $129? Higher?. It'd have to have 32GB of storage right? CD games were what, 650MB each? For chipsets, I suppose the same garbage cheapo phone chipsets handling the NES/SNES Mini could handle PS1, so I imagine that wouldn't be an issue...

For some reason I have no nostalgia for the Ps1. As it is, I have a Ps2 and 3 that plays all my Ps1 disks as well as a bunch downloaded on my Ps3 and Vita. That more or less settles my itch for that console but eh...why not I guess. Still no excuse for them not being available on PS4, though....

Day 1 for me.

But the collection is so vast you wouldn't be able to satisfy everyone.

GTA? Colony Wars? Wipeout 2097? GT?

Final fantasy games may be out the window, and then there is licensing issues.

How about a PS2 classic?
Can't make a PS2 Classic with crazy cheap hardware, emulating a PS2 require quite a bit more performance than emulating a PS1. Don't think we will see a PS2 Classic Mini anytime soon, maybe in a decade or something.

Since I already have all the PS2 games I care about, I would rather see a new PS2 Slim model with HDMI, than a PS2 Classic.

I disagree: Tomb Raider had great controls. The games are all about precise platforming and smooth orienteering. The only mechanical area where the classic Tomb Raiders fall short is the combat, specifically how the games handle aiming and lock-on.

I'd love to see TR2 on a PS1 classic as it's my personal favourite, but TR3 is the best of the PS1 games.

The only way I'll buy this is if it has an optical drive and play's the original discs, but I highly doubt that as piracy was fairly easy on the original PS1.

The licensing issue is going to be a big one. This generation is the one where that really became a factor. For GT they're going to have to make sure they have the license for all of the car manufacturers, all the track sponsors and then all of the music in the game. And pretty much every other racing game from that generation is going to be in the same position. And you really can't have a PS Classic if you aren't going to include the best selling game on that platform (which would be GT2).

I didn't like it when Nintendo took this approach and I don't like that Sony is taking it too.
Its just another yet another box that will have to sit at my entertainment unit when they could put their resources into backwards compatibility on current + future systems. I don't get it.

Even more insulting is that it will probably be a Playstation 1 Classic or Playstation 2 Classic which used CD's and/or DVD's which obviously the PS4 is capable of using. Atleast in Nintendos corner their old systems used a format that is no longer used. So so stupid and greedy.
