He gave a lot of great indies exposure they would have never gotten otherwise and consistently championed transparency and consumer rights.

A great guy who had no peer in what he did and who cannot be replaced. Fuck cancer.

Man, I used to watch a ton of his stuff when I first got into PC gaming. RIP John.

Dedication to his craft, integrity, nuance, talent, and a scaffold for deserving but under-appreciated talent.

John exemplifies all of these qualities. He was (and still is) the only games journalist whose content I personally found worth watching and hold in high regard. He will be missed, especially because there is no real quality alternative to his content at the moment.

RIP

Never saw or heard any of his shows but I certainly appreciate him because he did what he loved the most until his very last day and that is something to be recognized. May he rest in peace. Way too young to go.

Fuck cancer seriously.

This is the funniest thread since the last time Era mods banned people for being mean to dead bigoted trash.

That is so sad, it went so quick from retiring until his death.

Rest in piece and may your friends and family come to peace with it.

"Black" tarry stool is what you don't want to see, yeah.

I have had massive issues with black tarry stools, it represents a bleed in the upper intestinal tract while more reddish, light red stools signify that there is a bleed in the lower intestinal tract. For black tarry stools, you need an Endoscopy, a camera through the throat. If you notice anything different in any of your stools, always go to the GP, simple as that.

Unfortunately there was a period for about a week where my stools were black and tarry and I knew it could be potentially life threatening (a stomach ulcer that is at risk of perforation or anything else unusual), so I went to the hospital and it's extremely difficult to convince them to arrange a camera test if your bloods are all normal but I didn't care, you need to push them as much as you can or if you have to, go private.

Rest In Peace man.

I was never a PC gamer, but the quality of his videos has always been some of the best. I also respected his valiant battle against cancer.

Thank you for your work John.

This has really been bumming me out all day. Earlier, I couldn't bear to post more than just RIP. It feels kind of funny to me to feel this way about someone I didn't actually know. The last death to hit me like this was Ryan Davis. At least there, I listened to and watched his content near daily. TotalBiscuit I would only pop in on every once in a while to see what was new on his channel. His was a presence and a voice I greatly enjoyed, and now that it's gone....the sad feelings just gnaws at me.

My condolences go out to Genna and his friends and family.

Nine of the top ten posts on Reddit's /r/all right now are all from various communities independently mourning John, with many more further down the page. It's a discovery even for those like myself who have followed his work for nearly a decade now, in my case primarily via StarCraft (although I first encountered his voice through WoW, when he was one of the first out of the gate to push back against the incursion of cosmetic cash microtransactions when the Celestial Steed first landed back in WotLK). As just one example, I only had the vaguest notion of what Warframe was and had no idea what an impact he had on the development of that scene.

I know this is a console-centric forum (with, let's call it as it is, a sizeable and vocal progressive presence that accepts no mediation, compromise, or nuance when it comes to repudiating the more despicable reactionaries online), but I think it's quite fair to say that where the PC scene is concerned, no media figure was more important to so many and it's hard to imagine one that would be as broadly mourned. When TB covered a game or lent his support to fledgling independent titles, be it through exposure, advice, or direct contributions like the voice work he provided for Space Pirates and Zombies, he gave it his all and made you know that he was never there to be a tourist hopping on the flavour of the month. It's hard to fathom how one finds the time or energy to make this commitment and mean so much to so many games and players at once. From SC2 alone I've probably heard more of his speaking voice in the past few years than that of many of my closest friends, and yet I've only ever seen a fraction of his work.

I'll be a little bolder than that, in fact, and say that John's contributions were as beloved and necessary as they were because they filled the vacuum left by the insipid log-rolling, hype culture, schoolyard clannishness, misplaced priorities, sanctimonious hectoring, and intellectual failure of the established enthusiast media at large. If that also swept along a great deal of reactionary unpleasantness in its wake, well, perhaps we can distribute blame for those externalities some other day; but know that John Bain was as beloved as he was in so many corners because he worked his arse off to provide a much-needed service and perspective to which the self-described journalists had abjectly failed to attend. It's no mistake that everyone who worked with him directly or interacted with him in person only had the kindest things to say about him, while the the sneering at his kind of work, or overblown and uncharitable accusations of complicity in a culture of entitlement and harassment, reliably came from those who were so far removed from the communities he served as to have never interacted with him productively at all.

That always reflected more on them than it did on him. And once the condolences have died down, the taboo about speaking ill of the dead has subsided, and certain parties come out of the woodwork again to air their meticulously documented grievances, I won't let them forget it. You know who you are.

how is this ban worthy? thread derail because poster talked about, in his/her opinion, how this individual contributed to the video game medium? i've never listened to or watched said individual but come on, a person takes the time to articulate his/her thoughts in multiple paragraphs and you regulate it to essentially "user banned one week for thread derail"?!? at least have the decency to explain why one line comments of "r.i.p. john bain" are not bannable, because those type of comments add SO much to any sort of discussion, but well thought out paragraphs describing how one person, who recently passed away, contributed or not contributed to the medium is.

When I saw Genna's tweet this afternoon I just couldn't believe it. I felt devastated. TB has been fighting for a while but it still feels way too soon. The community lost a good man today.

For the last week, I've been hesitant to enter the gaming forum because I was afraid to see this thread :(

Rest in peace, John.

I remember when I first saw his Shining Force 3 videos. Even though he (wisely) cancelled it to move on to more popular content, it remains one of my favourite LP'S.

Rest in peace.

He definitely fought valiantly. I believe the initial prognosis was a life expectancy of 2 years, so he beat that and then some. Right until recently he wanted to go into experimental treatment, but was not a good candidate.

Shit, really enjoyed his presence in the Starcraft 2 scene, hasnt been as involved as much recently for obvious reasons, but he was a major figure a few years ago, and did alot of great stuff, not only with his casting, but the tournaments and hard work he put into the scene. A fantastic hype caster, and always brought alot of enthusiasm and excitement to the games, and was awesome at hyping up the crowd. I didnt watch any of his other videos and streams he did on PC gaming in general, but definitely recognize all the incredible work and perseverance it took to get to where he was. Was really hoping he could battle through his illness, very sad news.

fuck. He was a good man and will be sorely missed by the community. I respected him for his passion and dedication towards the hobby. The gaming world was better with TB's voice and contributions to many discussions. I hope his family, friends, and loved ones do as well as they possibly can in this saddening time.

Fucking cancer... 33 is too young
