Hey if i was rich I wouldnt be seen in some fuckboi wannabe street racer car that the frs is stereotyped for
but I aint rich so I'm not left with many options for a cheap light rwd coupe platform that is reliable and not 10+ years old and prone to having the seats stolen (looking at you s2k)

I don't own one, but I do say their one of the best car for modding for performance and stance. The FA20 engine is really capable of fun and modding for turbos/superchargers.

The twins are in that spot the miata was when it came out (slow hairdressers car), give it a decade and suddenly everyone on the Oasis will be posting about how fun and light and go-karty they are
I'm really tempted to get an RS now that Ford has announced they will no longer be selling them in the U.S. I wasn't planning on getting one till 2019/2020 but now I feel pressure to jump on one. Damn it Ford!!!

HKS made a GT86 that's still using the FA20 up to 800 PS and it absolutely dominated Under Suzuki's S15 50 second on Tsukuba.

They're really good looking car but they're asking too much for a car that doesn't have too much power. For just a couple thousand more of get the 370z. Nice looking cars though.

Not to mention, Z33 350Zs are cheaper in price now. The ND Roadster/Miata/MX-5 is also still a really good car for modding as well (although it seems like era doesn't like modded cars).

Yeah I picked up a 350z myself as a project car at the same time my buddy picked up a mustang. We've been working on them for almost 3 years on and off so we can hit the drag strip and just mess around and have fun. Some one cut me off a week after I bought my 350z and not long ago I finished rebuilding it and as soon as I was done my buddy got into a gnarly crash. So we never found out who's was faster after a ton of modifications. :(

Since you happen to have a Z33. Are the VQ35DE much easier to work on now? I heard they were often a pain to work on.

Yeah they're a pain in the ass but only because there isn't much space in the engine bay to fit your hands in. I had a lot of trouble getting my hands into to rear when I was swapping out the camshaft position sensors or when I was swapping the two rear spark plugs. I lost track if how many times I've had to just remove the front bumper to get some more space to work with. When I was rebuilding my car it wasn't much of a problem as the whole front end was gone and the front right side lol. I don't have any pics on hand of the engine bay.

My buddy and I decided we'd start with upgrading suspensions and bigger tires, exhausts, intakes, little things and by the end of this year we were gonna finally get into the bigger things like I was gonna get a turbo kit and he was gonna rebuild his engine. We did suspensions first as we like to just drive down the curvy mountain roads.

Now though we have his car in my driveway as we're about to strip it cause the frame is bent. I put a hold on the turbo as I'm planning on going to Japan in Sept instead.

I almost bought a Miata to mess around with but I'm too big of a guy to fit comfortably and an S2K was a little more then I wanted to spend at the time. Thought about a 240z or 280z but it seems like I'd need a good chunk of money to get a decent one and then the cost of older car parts is really expensive so it seemed like itd be a really long project. Maybe in the fure.

I have a link of some photos that I didn't loose. Most were on my old cell.

Nice. I have a friend of mine that's looking for a G35 (basically luxury version of the Z33). So he's still gonna have a pain with modding because of space the VQ takes up. He hasn't decided when to get a G35, but he's looking for a daily that's not his Merc SUV.

I have a 17' 86 and while I enjoy it, the engine sounds like garbage. Also, you get people IRL just like the ones in this thread that feel the need to tell you about the lack of power or call it a "girls car" (even though most of the girls I know drive faster cars or hate how low it is and love their massive CUVs).

If the S2000 was still around brand new, I'd rather have one of those (yes, I know they were more expensive than the 86 when they came out).

I used to drive boring cars but the 86 got me into the world of sports cars, so I appreciate it for that at least. I'd also say there are a couple times a month where everything about the car clicks and I'm glad I got it. Not sure if spending $6000 for a supercharger/wheels and losing the factory warranty makes sense for me but I might look into that first before switching to something else

One thing about this car or any other car that is so low to the ground is the amount of idiots on the road that don't see you when they are changing lanes. I have always tried to avoid being in people's blind spots but with this car I have to go the extra mile.

Also not being able to see over the car in front of you is nuts, because you can't predict the flow of the traffic and can't see what's ahead, so you are at mercy at the person in front of you to brake easily and not at the last minute.

Now I get those threads at the FT86 forums titled "I drove my 86/FRS/BRZ today and didn't crash"

This car seems like a magnet for it.

Hilariously, my wife is the primary reason we ended up with one: she is not a "car person," but knows the designs that she likes...which always end up being the most expensive / exclusive models possible. Past "oh, that looks nice" winners: Aston Martin DBZ, new Corvette Stingray, Jaguar F-Type. At the Subaru dealership, she looks across the lot: "oh, that Acura is cool!" NSX, natch. This weekend: "I saw a Mercedes that was pretty nice!" ... it was an AMG GT. :|

We were in the market for a new car, and she knew that she liked the BRZ, she was coming from an Acura RSX that she loved, but I wasn't sure that she would really enjoy a more pure sports car. She takes a test drive with the salesman, comes back. "How'd it handle?" "Pretty good!"

In regards to HP, a good friend of mine owns a Miata MX-5 RF and damn that 155hp is fun. He test drove many 300+ HP cars and went with the RF because it is fun, especially when the primary place it is driven is the burbs where having 300 HP isn't practical.

Yeah I've tuned my golf to about 300 wheel and frankly I'm barely able to use it all on the road. It's great for autocross and the dragstrip, but I'm not really getting any more out of it than when I was tuned to stage 1.

This is kinda why I want to pick up a Miata/brz one day. I cart around too many people to abandon a four door, but there's something to be said of a car that's a blast while driving at or under the speed limit.

How did I miss this thread!?

I have a 2015 Series.Blue in CWP. I just had Eibach Pro Kit springs installed on Friday, lowering it an inch all around. I'm gonna pick up some 20mm and 25mm spacers for the front and rear respectively within the next couple of weeks. Then I'll move on to exhaust mods. I also need to stop being lazy and get some tints.

Sexy! dark tints will really set that car off. what front lip is that?
Thanks, yeah I plan on doing it real soon, I've put it off because I had tints on my 350z and I hated it at night. Wanna make sure I get a good balance this time.

It's the STI aero kit, it comes stock on the Series.Blue and this year's Ts.

Didn't think it was possible, but I fit four human adults in the car yesterday... for a 10 mile round trip even.

Depends a little bit on your application, but JDL has incredible build quality and Gruppe-S/Tomei often make the most power. I'm running JDL on my supercharged setup, and could make 8-10 more HP with a Gruppe-S.

im leaning towards the Tomei. Im just NA with the Injen intake and invidia N1 (with overpipe and catless frontpipe)
Im reading it will eliminate the 3k through 4k power gap.

I used to work for a small startup audio company that made audio systems specifically for Toyota/Subaru cars like the BRZ/FR-S/86, and I spent some time driving them to meets and testing out different EQ files in the company FR-S and 86.

Don't own one myself but I loved driving them, even though I didn't find them particularly comfortable to be in.

I've got one - the base (in Australia) GT model. It's my weekend car.

My daily is a Volvo S60 T6 AWD which is way more powerful so I do notice the difference in a straight line, but in reality you don't use that power on the street. The 86 is fast enough, I love taking it through the bends in the hills.

... was it OEM Audio Plus, by chance? I've been so tempted to get one of their setups...

I'm surprised at how many BRZ/86 owners there are here. That's pretty cool.

I have an NB Miata, hoping to get an S2000 by the end of the summer.

Whoa, didn't expect anyone on here to know of them! Yes, OEM Audio Plus. I'd recommend one of their setups, definitely. The full speaker upgrade over the basic sub+tweeter system. I think they still offer a custom EQ setting for the DSP amp. The lows and highs are powerful and clear, if anything the mids were not as great but that's nitpicking on my end. Listening to FLAC files is outstanding on their systems. The BRZ/FR-S/86 is by far their most popular kit, at least it was when I was there.

The installation can be a bit lengthy and cumbersome at times (if you're new to pulling apart your car), but it seamlessly integrates into the car (I filmed/edited several installation videos along with the manuals) and they are more than willing to help you out if you call them while you're doing the installation.

It's a REALLY small company but their customer service is outstanding.

Haha! It was a bit of a wild guess, but I knew they were small and focused on Toyota / Subaru. I'm thinking about one of theirs being a project for next year. I realized that I only drive the car a few days a week (wife gets priority!), and when I do it's mostly podcasts... but when we're driving together and listening to music, I'd love for it to have better sound. Glad to hear more positive things about them: reviews from other owners have been uniformly great.

Funny you mention that, first time I listened to a podcast in an FR-S with a system installed I was unexpectedly blown away, the highs are so clear that you get the sensation that you're in the room with the podcasters themselves!

You can eliminate most of the torque dip with a good tune. Add a header like that, and you'll be up around 190-200 at the wheels, depending.

A catless UEL with a catless front pipe and the N1 is going to be pretty damn loud, if that's what you're after.

When my car dies (could take 10 years the way it's going but I don't mind, I love it) it is on the short list of cars I'll seriously consider to replace it (they don't make celicas anymore and I won't want to buy a car as old as mine to replace it). That and the hard top mx-5. I like the brz's looks better but convertible is a good arguement against. I'm betting both cars will be fun enough to drive for me.
