EDIT - Since a lot of you don't realize this, I'm talking about driving with the quad area right above ONE knee, not with BOTH legs, which would be insane

For those of you not in the loop: it's completely possible (some would say easy) to steer your car with your knee, or upper leg area. The technique is perfect for those of us who need to quickly use both hands while driving, for whatever reason. Other people, however, drive this way whether they need to or not.

Personally, I do it all the time for various reasons, usually involving a mug of coffee and a breakfast sandwich or an afternoon stretch. Sometimes I do it just because I can.

So, ResetERA, do you ever take your hands off the steering wheel to drive with your knees? If you don't, do you condone this practice?

edit - I get that this is a dangerous practice, and I don't condone it. The question still stands.

No, I don't condone it.

Having been hit by a car doing 50mph while cycling, I think drivers should have 100% attention on their driving, that means keeping at least one hand on the wheel at all times.

I do, because of the traffic here (Manila) but I only do it when I'm eating a sandwich. It's not like I need to move in a different direction when the car only moves forward a couple of inches every time the traffic moves.

Do none of you ever drive in rush hour traffic? When cars are moving slowly, having the ability to suddenly jerk your steering wheel 90° isn't exactly necessary.

You should stop doing this. Just stop for five minutes and eat in your parked car. You're taking an unnecessary risk with your life and the lives of others.

Also, you can eat with one hand lol

People are bad enough at driving even when they have both hands on the wheel

Don't drive with your knees. You aren't as capable as you think you are

For your sake and everyone else around you, I hope it's not to use your phone.

fuck no, hands on wheels. knee driving is a good way to have a pothole or groove in the road suddenly decide your car is going somewhere else.

I mean, I have done it. When I'm driving on the highway and need to eat a tasty dish of poutine, I need both hands. I wouldn't exactly condone it though.

Distracted Driving covers the following in Ontario
  • Talking on a cellphone
  • Texting
  • Reading (cellphones, books, maps, newspapers)
  • Watching videos and movies
  • Smoking
  • Personal grooming
  • Adjusting the radio or a CD or playing extremely loud music
  • Conversing with other passengers while fatigued
  • Eating and driving
I can't think of anything outside of this that requires two hands while driving. Either pull over, or wait until your at a stop sign/red light(Which anything regarding a phone is still distracted driving)

Don't drive with your knees, you're going to kill someone or yourself.

I don't drive anymore but I almost never did this. Doesn't seem like a good idea at all really.

If the road is empty yes I would. These days my car has lane keeping so I just let it do its thing in long stretches.

Nah, I prefer to drive properly in an attempt to have others not fucking die as we are all operating heavy ass machines.

Old fashioned thing I guess.

No. Honestly I don't think I ever have.

It's just been so ingrained into me to ALWAYS have a grip of the steering wheel. If I'm in a car and the engine is running, it's now just a habit to always have at least one hand on the wheel at all times. Even in slow moving near traffic jam traffic.

I'm usually elbow on door/window with one hand on steering wheel, when going on a motorway/highway.
If I'm pulling off slowly or stuck in slow traffic then I might go no hands for a second or two.

I always have at least one hand on the wheel. I've never tried steering with my knees but I've seen my brother do it. I've also never used cruise control even on 8 hour drives because if you get comfortable you get lazy and less aware of your surroundings.

I used to knee drive in high school, so I could light marijuana on fire while driving. A lot easier than you would expect. Haven't done it in a long time though.

Jesus H Christ, I swear some people on Era are absolutely terrified of cars. Between this and the EU "speed limiter" thread (RIP), I've seen so many comments that suggest you're gonna die instantly if you drive 5 km/h over the speed limit or eat a cheeseburger with one hand while driving.

Its not easy to throw a 2+ tonne vehicle off course unless you're driving on a shitty backstreet road laced with pot holes, people. Using your knees for short bursts is fine.
