Kind of getting that vibe too... what's the point of a thread if we literally can't have a discussion? Really turning me off to this board.
Because it's not a discussion any rationale person would want to have. It's cut and dry. And whining about it is like going into a thread about abuse and finding a way to blame the victim. This shit shouldn't have to be explained.

Kendrick was a fucking retard for bringing up white girl on stage to sing with him if he going to act like that if she sings the lyrics.

Kendrick was a fucking retard for bringing up white on stage to sing with him if he going to act like that if she sings the lyrics.
Please, explain why Kendrick is a 'fucking retard'.

Did he force her to say it? It's his fault she didn't censor herself?

What are these exceptions
Discussing the word itself, like in that samuel Jackson interview I posted earlier where he insisted the interviewer use the word. Or, like others had mentioned, reading excerpts from a literary work. Or acting in a movie. Or to use an even more ambiguous hypothetical rap example, if someone had been asked onstage to perform this song.

While I can 100% agree there are far "worse" contexts to use the word, this is still in that "obvious" territory for me.
Fair enough. I don't think I would have been able to make such a clear judgement, but hopefully most people are savvier than I am :V

'If you have a different opinion than ours, you're banned.' Why don't you just make that your official slogan resetera? Embarrassing.
Also if you get warned or banned thats on YOU. The mod edit explicitly stated who to contact if you had issues with moderation.

Well go ahead I'm done arguing in circles with you when your logic makes 0 sense.

you said that not taking an action because of fear of retaliation means that the person knows the action they would take is wrong

this is an incorrect assumption since throughout history people have refrained from taking actions that they knew weren't wrong, and even thought were right because of fear of retaliation, thus demonstrating that fearing retaliation for an action doesn't necessarily mean that the person knows the action is wrong

pretty straight forward logic imo

Right, I'm just going to flat out state an opinion and I want anything that comes towards it* - I love Kendrick, but he was stupid letting this happen.

Why the fuck would you have beef with a white person saying the n-word in a song you invited them to sing when you damn well know it uses that word on every other verse?

It's retarded, it sucks that she said it, but she was damn into it and as were most of the fans, I can understand how 100% white people such as myself CANNOT appropriate that word, and it is fashionable for black folk to use it - but it doesn't detract from the fact that he was retarded to invite her onto the stage for that song or that she was stupid for using it after she self-edited...

At some point, in certain conditions and enviroments if you keep throwing that word it will normalise it, you can't dislike someone who you invited on stage for a song where you wrote it into every other verse - she wasn't trying to be racist, at all, she was enjoying herself and the song which is one of his most popular songs.

*I've been drinking wine for the past six hours.

Edit:

Let's flat out say it, this is what he bloody wrote and that is EXACTLY how it should be sang, socially conscious or not - granted she's white, she said it, she was given that platform with the dude WHO WROTE THOSE LYRICS.

Kendrick 100% could've called on a black person to hop on stage & sing with him.
Instead, he chose the white girl.
Kendrick, you know damn well your lyrics had racial slurs in them.
Kendrick should've gotten Donkey of the Day. imo

Here is a video of the guy who was on stage before her. Also white. Singing the same song. Didn't say it.

https://twitter.com/juliafreeman98/status/998447068938227712?s=19

As was stated multiple times already, Kendrick does this sometimes at his concert for this song in particular. He doesn't look for white people to trick them into saying it. He will bring up anybody who wants to come up and try to perform the song with him. I think he handled this so incredibly well. If you watch the video, he's sort of joking with her and the crowd. He smiles and hugs her at the end and says "she almost had it."

Why not just delete your account? Not saying that word isn't being "super left", it's basic decency, it's like the bare minimum you can do. In fact, you don't even have to do anything to not say it, it's easier than breathing!

I remember back in grade school when we were going around the room reading Huck Finn out loud in class. The awkward pauses and mumbling every time Jim's name came up was one of the most terrifying and hilarious moments of my young life. Thankfully he was never in the parts I had to read.

People did read it though right? Non blacks and blacks alike.. If not that's pretty fucked.

I can only speak for myself but I think people here know my position about this but misunderstand the motivation. I've accepted that Respect for people is as important as consistancy and understanding but it's hard for me to shake the need for understanding and clear guidlines.

I have no issue with how Kendrick handled the situation it is his concert after all and he can do what he wants. As a deaf Pierson I've been to concerts before and have had interpreter a (family members) sign lyrics to me with the n word in them. My family is not black but they not not to leave anything out when it comes to interpreting music, movies, and other media. I want to see it all and to know it all,, the full totality of content with nothing substituted. If someone in the audience know sign language and happened to be black would they be offended. Maybe but I wonder why they would if they could have easily missed her sign or not know sign language. Is it better they not know? What about it is really better? And at what point do I become racists and/or insensitive?

To me it isn't about word ownership or being told what I can or can't say.. It's about censorship. And censoring ourselves. And the motivations and understanding of people. I'm sure most non lacks actually don't get this issue fully. But others may genuinely feel that there are cases that have not been explored yet where it is ok to say the word and they should stay that way. And not for the goal of having a haven where we can stick it to the black man and break the rules.

Art and education are important and we have examples of which there are conflicting ideas about what is acceptable. I bring up tarintinos movies because I feel like it's a valid question.. We have charts here saying never ever say the word but then people saying it's different in movies.. Which one is it? If it's different in movies why isn't it different in music? Or paintings or videogames? What is Coats saying the word f***t in his lecture when he's trying to make a point about words you should never say as he says a word you should never say. No wonder non black people can't get it "right".

I have never used the word because I can't use it. I don't want to use the word I don't need to use it. I don't mind being told I can't use it.. I'm not an asshole that will argue out of spite or some sense of entitlement. But language to me is very important.consistancy is important.. Censorship is important. And I feel that the attitude that this is a simple cut and dry issue is not productive. Valid discussion isn't an attack. Valid Questions aren't Trojan horses.

Forum whining because you want to tell black people how to they shouldn't use reclaimed slurs if white kids can't use the slur

the board will be better without your kind, I assure you

"I can't believe Kendrick made that white person use the n word, what an asshole."

What even is this?

If the word is so bad to him then him putting it in his song is dumb af. Expecting her to censor it just because she's white is dumb.

You're missing context.

See white people enslaved black people and have abused them for hundreds of years in the United States. White people used the n word as a way to demean black people. Some black people have co-opted the term.

With that context in mind, do you see why 1. it's okay for a black person to use the word and 2. it's not okay for a white person to use it?

Think before you post. If he set her up would he have been so cool about it, or would he have used it as a way to go on a rant about white people saying the n-word? Plus, this isn't the first time he's pulled a white person on stage.
Im with Whoopi on this one.
Shouldn't put it in the song, if you don't want people repeating it.

end of story...oh, and nice setup Kendrick. You set that poor girl up.

Apparently I'm not fooling anyone but my myself, because that was it was...

'Deducing' from a daft one liner it that I'd like to be discussing "bigoted nonsense" here seems like lashing out to me. I'm well aware ERA is a left wing forum with stringent moderation rules, like GAF was before it, that's why I stuck around. Doesn't mean I won't find the way people have written some thing funny sometimes even if I'm in agreement with them on the issue.

Seeing as you've brought the mod post up independently, wouldn't it make posts like the one I was replying to to fairly redudant then? The mods are more than capable of making thread pronouncements without anybody else doing it. And no one is forcing anyone to repeat themselves in this thread, we could all be doing something else instead if we wanted.

So your round about response is we should be all doing something else. Maybe take your own advice then.

Once again, had I or many other White people been called on the stage, we wouldn't have said it. It was a problem with this woman in particular.

Also, the song does not have racial slurs in them. That is the disconnect people seem to have. The N word between two Black people is not a racial slur. When a White person or other race uses the word it becomes a slur, hence, the lady should not have said the word.

Hmm yeah I'm not really happy with how Kendrick handled that and kinda shamed the girl on stage like that.

White people shouldn't fuckin say that word in conversation, but I feel like performing a song, it's different, there's no hatred behind it, I don't think there is any racism behind it either.

I feel like he totally set her up with that shit, he was waiting for it. when she's rapping a long to the song and is feeling the moment shes not gonna be up there thinking clearly to begin with, she's next to Kendrick and her adrenaline was probably through the roof.

Idk I realize this is all subjective but I'm not okay with someone being humiliated like that on stage after being invited up to sing a song that you know has the word you don't want white people saying

On one hand i do feel the audience member should have not said it. But the heat of the moment i don't think it was malicious. Context counts.

Also a word about the over the top moderation.

Can mods please chill. We don't need this place becoming NeoGaf 2.0 all over again. Some common sense is needed.
