And I thought the streak might end with the next round of games. Yet here again, Detroit, Dreams and Days Gone (3 D's) seem to be previewing very well and Insomiac, ND, and Kojima have great track records which builds confidence in their upcoming titles. Kinda weird some of the skepticism I see with Days Gone (same happened with Horizon) since the loop is like a mix of twin-stick shooter gameplay and survival elements. The new footage just screams Resogun in a reality setting to me, and again, I expect at worse a fun game here, story will be hard to top some recent stuff from WWS. Not all of these will be God of War level critical darlings, but wow, Sony is turning into a mini-Nintendo with this level of sustained quality from first party. Heck even GT is a much better game than at launch, and Dreams (usual for a MM game) has potentially no ceiling in how innovative and creative it can be. Can Sony can keep this level of quality into next gen?

I think it took a while to find what they were really good at. Previous gens they bounced around a lot of things. But Sony settled into a type of game that they really excel at, and are doubling down on it.

I don't see why not. I mean, their current streak began in the 2nd half the PS3 lifecycle, so it's already multigenerational. The only real stinkers that I can think of are Killzone: Shadowfall and Knack, both launch titles, one basically being a tech demo and other being a... whatever the hell Knack is. Everything else has been great.

Notably though, both the PS3 and PS4 had relatively weak first few years. Probably due to the last gen support winding down and studios getting their new development pipelines oiled. The same could happen with the PS5, but I'd fully expect the same level of strong 1st party support that we've come to expect from the last couple of generations once things are up and running.

They have a lot of talent. Assuming that doesn't change before next-gen I think they'll be in an amazing position.

I've never seen someone pretend Days Gone and Detroit will be good before, but okay. Jokes aside, this gen's been really underwhelming for all three companies in terms of first party support, at least for me. They're all good, sure, but not the 10/10s people are claiming them to be. They're more or less 6s or 7s in my opinion. Even the PS4's best exclusives were all developed by third party developers, Bloodborne, Persona 5, Yakuza 6, etc. Nintendo's best first party game last year was probably Xenoblade 2 in all honesty. I wouldn't doubt it if Shin Megami Tensei V outshines it though. I dunno, I feel like if anything Nintendo's track record has declined along with Sony and Microsoft. Sony's really good at generic and pretty games that appeal to the lowest common denominator while Nintendo appeals to creative and beautiful games, but the gameplay loops have been garbage with the Switch so far creating boring and often un-engaging experiences. Microsoft's just being Microsoft though. Halo and Gears aren't nearly as influential as they once were and other titles like Sunset Overdrive were boring and too try-hardy for me. I'm just not feeling the first party titles this gen.

Nah, it has nothing to do with the topic.

OT: 'Kinda impressive' low-balls things, in my view. It has been QUITE impressive! But, this isn't really new. If you've been with PlayStation from the beginning, these amazing experiences have been around. They've changed a bit over the years, but I expect no less from them. Every time.

Now you have my attention....anyone care to expand if this comparison makes sense?

Sony's first-party studio relationships have been paying dividends this whole generation. They seem to have mostly struck a balance where what the teams want is in tune with what the market wants, and their technology efforts have managed to retain the high-tech feel during a generation that is/was often characterized as sub-par, relative to the PC market. Oddly enough, racing is probably the area they struggle with the most, but they're still solid enough to appreciate.

They really hit a groove this gen in terms of recognizing what gamers want and delivering that with high quality.

It's a massive change from the countless awful shooters they churned out last gen. Instead of turds like Killzone or Resistance or MAG or SOCOM we're getting not only more variety but just overall higher quality games.

If they would just embrace enhanced BC like Microsoft does, I don't think I could find anything to complain about with Sony.

Because it's lame and we have the same discussion weekly, regardless of if the threads are even about MS?

Anyway, Sony has been on fire for a while now. The only games that didn't really click for me were The Order and Knack. And The Order was pretty enough that I still played a good bit of it. They are set-up to be on point for next gen and I don't expect the quality to fall off.

I dont see why not. They have released lots of quality games and all the third party is on board.

Unless they go the PS3 route and launch a 600 dollar machine I think they are good to go from the start.

We've been at the point where I'll always buy the next Sony system for some time, because even if it has a slow start you know how many studios they own and how good they are. The games are bound to come.

And I love how much they're investing in single player games.

It does seem like Sony hits a stride after a couple of years in a generation.
And since there will not be a significant architectural shift for gen9, I presume many Sony studios will more easily produce good results. OFC, rushing to make launch games is never easy, those are almost always potentially troublesome [except when they are in fact heavily delayed old games, like BotW].

I honestly don't feel anything for most of what they're doing these days. I prefer experimental PS1 era Sony and to an extent PS2 era. I don't care about pretty games, I don't care about story and honestly...a lot of their stuff sans GoW, are pretty average as far as gameplay and systems and even GoW suffers from some "AAA checklist" fatigue.

Waiting on GoT and Spidey to really wallop me, but to me the Sony first party catalog has been pretty boring for a long time.

Sony don't have a magic stick, or a consistent formula they can rely on. What they do have is an unquenchable thrust to try and try again. They have supported a wide range of projects since the inception of the PlayStation brand, repeatedly fine tuning what works and extracting anything that doesn't.

Personally, I think it's shortsighted to praise their PS4 output without looking back at the development culture they have been fostering for decades.

Last gen, we had ND as the most big exponent from Sony first party teams by far. But this gen is being awesome cause we see other teams.

Nowadays, we are seeing the maturing of the others to a level of excellence that really makes a difference for Sony.

What? It's not a third person shooter anymore?
yeah it definitely is. But the whole sets itself apart description the devs said is always feeling danger and threatened. No place is safe and hordes are huge. Sometimes you destroy them sometimes you run, sometimes you lead them to your enemies. Always danger just like twin sticks where you are dodging and maneuvering around enemies all the time.

Interesting, I haven't heard this take on it before.
PS access and the game informer dev talks sold me on the concept. They show a much smoother experience where you are running from the horde on your bike, throwing bombs at it, and they are just falling all over the place lol. It's actually ridiculous, kinda weird I guess but reminded me of Resogun with that tense feeling of being surrounded all the time.

I think moving into next generation they actually have an even stronger base. Guerrilla Games will be making Horizon 2, for example, which is going to be even better than the first one. And I think Tsushima will probably end up being a stronger franchise than inFAMOUS was, too.

They're in a great position, providing they just keep doing what they're doing.

Yup, Sony's first party on PS4 has been the most consistent they've ever been in history. More so than in any previous console by far. If they manage to pull out winners with Detroid, Spiderman and Days Gone they'll have an almost inmaculate record since I fully expect Death Stranding and TLoU2 to be critically lauded as well.

Kinda impressive is an understatement. Though I am disappointed that some franchises that seemed primed for sequels have fallen by the wayside (Infamous, Ratchet and Clank, etc.)

They've found a direction that suits them, and they're really good at it and it's served them well. I personally don't find the style of games they make to be all that fun (The Last of Us is really good, but my opinion is that they haven't done anything on the same level since), but there's a big market for the kind of games they make and they're some of the best in the industry at it, so they're in a really good place, for sure.

YES YES YES YESSSSS. PS1 era Sony was best Sony. Although, I was thinking this the other day, a lot of what makes PS1 my favourite console/console era was the amount of exclusives it had that, these days, are just multi-platform. Tekken, FFVII/VIII/IX, Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider, Silent Hill, Soul Blade, Resident Evil (kinda exclusive - you know what I mean).

What a fucking great era.

They do have a very bright looking immediate future, but it somewhat came at the expense of the first few years of the PS4's life cycle.

Up to this point there was very little to be excited for. The release of Horizon marked the shift for me. Prior to that we had a pretty sparse first party lineup that consisted of a few existing IPs like Killzone, Infamous. LittleBigPlanet, and Uncharted - all of which failed to impress as much as I would have liked. The one game I really liked, The Order: 1886, failed to find an audience, and Knack was went from mediocre to decent.

To me, these next 12 months feel like the Sony I loved in the PS3 cycle. We've got a promising, consistent mix of existing franchises and new IP. Hopefully they can continue to maintain that output for the next few years and immediately into the transition to the PS4's successor so that we can avoid that lull from these bloated development times.

2013: The Last of Us
2014: Infamous Second Son
2015: Bloodborne
2016: Ratchet and Clank (yes Uncharted 4 was awesome too)
2017: Horizon Zero Dawn
2018: God of War

Looking back at the last 5 years alone I've noticed they've always released at least one great 1st party game that, for me personally, has gotten me excited and just made me wanna sit around and play the game all day and at least try to go for the platinum, which is fun considering normally I don't give a toss about trophies. I'd say that's a pretty damn good track record and with Spiderman and the Last of Us Part II ect coming I'd day it likely to continue.

It seems that the studio's being in close contact with each other often with Sony's support really pays off.
