I am a huge fan of Animal Crossing, and have been playing it since the Gamecube version was released. My favourite one is City Folk (Wii) but that is mostly because I am not really into handheld gaming, but thanks to the Switch being both a "normal" console, and a handheld, this is not an issue any more. For fun, I have compiled a list of features a future Animal Crossing can have, and I understand that for reasons (technical and others), most (if not all!) will not implemented. Anyway, feel free to suggest your ideas as well :)

- Option to have your town's weather depend on the location where you are. Basically if it is raining outside, it will be raining in the game

- Have an option for the game to save directly to the cloud so friends can visit your town even when your Switch is not active, or when you are playing something else (probably not technically possible)

- View your town via a browser whilst you are not playing the game (perhaps to see a friend who is visiting, etc.) (also, probably not technically possible)

- Limit the time in which you can acquire certain items in the game. For example, I remember on the Gamecube version you had to switch on the lighthouse daily for a week between 6am and 7am for the mayor to give you a particular item.

- Have the option to get invitations from other players and permanently move to their town, your original town is not destroyed in case you want to move back there, or get kicked out (again, there may be technical issues).

- Game focus more on collecting insects and fish and less on design (well this is a personal thing I guess)

A couple more:

- have shops and other places that only open at certain times, even very late at night

- have characters that come out at different hours of the day or night

- A real mobile app to interact directly with game characters.

- A "real" website that you access on your PC that lets you spend your bells on items and then get them delivered IN the game.

Something I miss from the game on GC is that there could be multiple houses in your town. Would love to have a community with my friends.

I just want a shitload of customization options. I want multiple themed rooms in my house, a garden I can decorate, paths I can built in my town, more control over public works, deciding where villagers move in etc.

This was something they said would happen with WiiConnect24 in City Folk. In the end it was only used for item distribution. Would love to see it actually realised now.

I need to be able to be brown without tanning - what a joke this game will be without this.

I want to see robust communal online stuff - like going to see KK and having others the too.

I would love there to be more interactivity with a worldwide audience. I think also being able to have more competitive minigames with animals or friends. I wouldn't mind seeing such features like snowball fights, hide and seek with friends, or being able to open any guests coming into your town.

Given the evolution of the internet, your town should be much more accessible to a general audience. This is what I've been hoping since Animal Crossing Wild World, but it has never come to proper fruition. The current state makes your town feel too isolated from the global Animal Crossing community

Maybe a more inclusive co op mode, where outsiders/friends are also a vital part of the community like Stardew. Your friends should also be able to be invested in a community and its improvements. Towns shouldn't just be for tourism.

Just remove the grass-wearing thing that started back in City Folk. I know they downgraded it in New Leaf, but actually just remove it and let me be a savage running all over the place instead of having to place tile damn you

On a random note, they should bring back getting villager pictures by friendship (like in Wild World). I'm a loser who liked it when an AI decided that I was cool enough to get one.

I'm pretty sure New Leaf had this. I remember getting pictures of my villagers every now and then. Unless you mean that they should continue to have it.

I would like random events with strangers! (Maybe.) Like if you are playing online, there should be a random chance when you enter a building to encounter other players. (but only in that building.)

More customization and control over how I look. I don't mind it too much, but it is kinda a hassle to always have to look up/google the intro questions to make a character I actually like.

More Villagers living in the city/town at once. When you become mayor you should be able to dictate/designate housing areas!

In New Leaf you'd get the picture by a favor or by letter when they finally left the town... my nitpick ass liked it more when they randomly came up to you and gave it scot-free because our BFF powers were that great.

I haven't touched Animal Crossing for a few years, but I was absolutely addicted to New Leaf for such a long time.

I'll probably be happy with whatever Nintendo comes up with, but a few things I'd like to see in AC Switch include:

- Higher degree of house and town customisation (possibly building off of Happy Home Designer)
- More potential interactivity with other AC players built into the core of the game
- More in-depth interaction and more varied dialogue with NPCs and villagers
- No grass deterioration

DITCH THE GRID. If I want to have a bench an inch away from a street lamp...freaking let me.

Also...let us terraform our town. No more resetting until I come across a randomized one that I like, please.

You could also get them from the April Fool's Day event, which was the easiest way. Even a villager one day old who you've never spoken to would give you their picture ha ha

I hope for things it stops being Pawn Stars and objects being usable, let me cook the fish and food I grow and by extension give household items such as stoves a purpose and give me a stamina meter so food becomes useful.
Let me be able to sleep and save in my bed which is a beds only purpose.

I also want to be the shopping and the residential area to be one so I don't have to walk all the way over there every time.

Personally, I'd love a heavier emphasis on Simulation. Bigger towns with more people, build shops and jobs for everyone to generate revenue and such.

Ditch the restrictive grid system for objects.

Let me easily build and move things around the town.

Let me make paths.

No grass deterioration.

More in depth fish and bug catching (like how some bugs will only show on a tree stump, more stuff like that).

I'd be perfectly happy with more of the same however the directions I hope they at least explore implementing:

- A new camera angle, no more rolling log style, something that allows a closer look at objects (especially since we will finally be playing Animal Crossing in HD!) as well as no longer having that last fossil hidden behind a building

- More in town buildings, I like the convenience of the shopping district, but it kind of makes your town feel a little less lively, which I'm not a huge fan of

- Find creative new ways to implement Nintendo's new GaaS paradigm into Animal Crossing, this franchise is ripe for this kind of thing.

- Get rid of the tropical island, or at least make it less cheap. It felt way too easy to spend all your time on the Tropical Island making bank, totally defeated the village charm aspect of the game to me.

Just make it Minecraft AC with animals joining based on progress or theme of your town.

I'm only half joking.

I'd like to see more animals fitting in a town, 10 is too little. I want everyone to have an actual role to fulfill in town. Animals that work, some choose to be farmers, others work in a shop etc. Let animals marry! Only based on same species I guess, it would be weird to see a bird marry a cat or something. And have them get an offspring.

Also, I'd like to see more options to costumize my house/town, more public works etc. And I want to choose where an animal gets to build their house.

More control over everything. Let me zone everything and customize everything about the town setup and look. Choose where new houses go, choose what town layout I get, and provide way more then improvements and let me choose where I place them with a precise grid system for pinpoint placement.

Give us a vastly expanded and improved pattern system for even greater customization and the creation of specific tile shapes and styles for things like paths and such that are recognized as such for character pathing.

Give us a real crafting system to create unique furniture. Provide us with a slew of generic furniture parts that we can mix and match and then apply various material and color styles to.

-Terraforming
-More design options for housing, something like the sims lite to build houses (but you still need rights to build more rooms into your house), when you get farther into the game they will let you design more of the town to your liking with a lot more options.
-Less limitations with texture creation, I know there needs to be a limit, but make it a lot bigger.
-More interactions with the animals, more dialogue, more scenes, basically that they feel more "real" and is fun to have them around even 60 hours into the game.
-More near cameras so the world feels more exapansive, even if they are optional at the touch of a button.

I know we are not going to get anything of this, so im probably out of the next animal crossing. I have a limit into the many hours I already lost with simple interactions with the villagers, buying and selling furniture and catching bugs and fish.

I'd like to see more animals fitting in a town, 10 is too little. I want everyone to have an actual role to fulfill in town. Animals that work, some choose to be farmers, others work in a shop etc. Let animals marry! Only based on same species I guess, it would be weird to see a bird marry a cat or something. .
The role stuff is a great idea, the marrying stuff only limited to the same species... no
That would look like some shitty anti LGBT/racist thing. Its a game were animals live, no fantasy world with antrho animals created like this have those kind of limitations. See Zootopia and Blacksad. let everyone be with anyone.

Ot at least make it so the food you consume gives you some benefits, it only serves to be sold now.
While I don't want a stamina system, I wouldn't mind if they added cooking mechanics so you could collect recipes, the town could have bake-offs, and maybe there could be a new diner shop you could mess with.

I feel like it's time to make a huge step forward. I would love to see a full 3D world with a third person camera. That's my hope.
EDIT, wait, I actually don't want third person view -- it would make it jankier imo.
I do want to see some big pushes in new directions though. Not particularly bigger towns, but maybe several unique biomes that are randomized for each town creation, which makes going to other players's towns have more of a sense of discovery and exclusiveness. The last 3 Animal Crossing titles suggest some unnerving trends towards gameifying the franchise too much taking away some of its identity, which is the casual nature and spontaneuety, but Happy Home Designer actually introduced new mechanics to the New Leaf engine such as the biomes and other QoL features. You could now slidle between half-squares on the grid and more.

I'm just so ready for a new AC game that is everything that NL was and then some. We don't have to be the Mayor IMO. A solution could be to create "elections" that you participate in, which determines what gets built in your town and if you want to be the "highest bidder" you simply throw in more money on the thing you want made than your other citizen. I also really wish for them to bring back NPC side stories and Blathers actually blathering instead of the samewhat personality-less characters of NL.

Honestly my biggest wish for it is just to not make me the "God" of my town too much. Let there be systems that make the game capable of wonderful amounts of customization and player-personalized gameplay but let us feel like it's a world that runs its own course without us, and we're just as much a part of it as our neighbours. That was the charm of AC:GC and WW to me, and with that limitation the moments of actually building your house bigger or meeting the rare NPCs feel so much more amazing.

I just don't want it to have micro transactions. Otherwise I should enjoy it. What I really want are more online interactions with strangers. I don't care if there is no chat between strangers other than pre-approved phrases, but the past games have been so limiting. In general Nintendo needs to stop acting like every gamer has a bunch of other gamer friends, especially ones who actually aren't too lazy to physically come over.

The inventory needs to be larger and tools shouldn't take up any spots. More things to do at night would be good. The NES games are a pipe dream but more minigames would be nice.

Added a couple more ideas to the original post.

Also, I am still impressed on how awesome the item trading system was on the GameCube which did not even require internet!

For some reason I've always felt that being able to room with an Animal Buddy would be a cool feature to put front-and-center.
