Picked up my copy today from Best Buy. The GCU discount and $10 rewards coupon from Mario Odyssey made this an easy purchase.

But I just stuck the cart in my Switch and I was prompted for a huge, unskippable, update. Was that the multiplayer? I thought we could just insert the cartridge and be good to go to play the campaign only.

What's going on?

That's Multiplayer and bug fixes lumped together. If you don't want the update, turn Airplane Mode on and it will skip the update and let you play the full Campaign unpatched.

Huh... interesting. I wish they'd have seperated the patch from the multiplayer. Not that I didn't want the multiplayer, I just thought we'd have the option D/L it and that it wouldn't be forced. That's why I'm skipping LA Noire on Switch, you can not play the campaign without a download.

Whilst I'll always personally consider the PC version of Doom the definitive one (for me anyway) I must admit I'm very impressed with the Doom port on Switch. They've done some job on getting this to work on the Switch hardware, it's amazing. I can take the resolution being lower but the 30fps is a hard sell, you do get used to it admittedly. Playing in handheld I find it's ok but I tend to have trouble with the joycons in that I never find them comfortable but this is a general problem for me with a lot of handheld consoles, it's why I tend to play my Switch docked. If Nintendo did some joycon version which was basically a pro controller split in half and just stuck on each side I'd buy it in an instant, I wouldn't even care if it looked ridiculous.

On that note I must say that the Pro Controller is absolutely wonderful and makes playing the game a joy. I put some hours into campaign and multiplayer and it's just lovely, I love that controller. Multiplayer is working very well and seems to be running on dedicated servers too. I had a lot of fun with it admittedly and ended up playing for like 2 - 3 hours. Got into matches really easy and didn't seem to have many online problems at all to be honest. I can see it keeping some kind of population for quite a while and it's great that everything is included DLC wise so folks get the complete package.

Overall I'll admit this was more of a curiosity buy for me but I must say if you only have a Switch (and no other machine) or just want Doom on the go it's a pretty damn solid purchase. I fully admit though, this is coming from a 60fps lover so if you don't give two fucks about that or resolution ? It's very decent. I'll probably finish the campaign once, play a bit more of multiplayer and then trade it in. Tempted to give Skyrim a go next week!

Man this is blurry. I haven't applied the day 1 patch tho. Does that help
Some?

Turn the motion blur in the options to low or off and turn off chromatic aberration as well. Those both help a good bit.

Thanks for stopping by the stream. Will do another tomorrow and commentate during the stream. I'm looking into doing more streams in the near future and I'm in the process of testing my setup to get the best quality and such.
Nate, help me lift this. Also, and more importantly, how you enjoying DOOM on Switch? I'm loving it just as much (if not more) as I did on PS4!

Never played DOOM before this, and I'm loving it. I've only played the multiplayer so far, but the 1hr stream I just did flew by and felt like I had only been playing for a few minutes. Can't wait to dive into the campaign a little later tonight. The game is such a good fit on Switch. Switch desperately needed an addictive online first-person shooter and DOOM delivers. I see big sales coming for the game this holiday.

Glad you're enjoying the multiplayer. I think it's underrated — it scratches an itch I've had since Unreal Tournament '99. That being said, I understand why it's overshadowed by the campaign. If you think the MP is good, I think you'll adore the campaign. It's truly one of the all-time greats. Keep us posted!

I'm pretty sure I managed to tank the framerate to single digits during the final two Argent Tower combat sections. Performance has been rock solid since and beforehand but yeah, the amount of things happening on screen in those sections definitely had the Switch sweating.

There's a performance patch? And is it possible to get that without downloading the entire multiplayer as well? :P

Wherever
Playing in handheld mode to start the game was fun. But now that I'm at home, on the flatscreen tv with my pro controller playing further... uh, wow. This game 0.o

Man, turning off motion blur is a revelation. Been playing all night and I quickly forgot about the resolution. In my head it's just the same damn game I played in 4k at 60 fps on my PC.

It's really a blast to play. I don't know why I didn't get into it much on PC. I love hell stuff and heavy metal stupid good times.

I picked up a copy of DOOM today precisely for some Unreal Tournament vibes on my Switch - and it delivers the goods. Used to play UT and Quake 3 on a Power Mac G3 with a Voodoo 2 card, now I've got this experience on a handheld.

How is the mp like? Are there different modes?

Is it more of a run and gun older school shooter?

I never knew I wanted the "gun in the centre" old school Doom mode until I tried it. Now it feels like a hyper update to Doom64, just a shame the option isn't in MP.

People say the MP sucks because they are basing it on 1) the pre-release beta that wasn't very great, and 2) the initial multiplayer *before* a bunch of fixes and feature additions that were there at the game's launch, and they never bothered to try or learn about the MP's updates and revisions.

Some time after release, id software revised and added a bunch to the MP and made a bunch of content free. The MP is a lot more fun and interesting now, but you know how things go-- once something has established a narrative it's really hard to change.

That said it's not like the MP is a revolution or anything, it's just good solid fun; it's by no means the horrible junk that so many still seem to think it is. *shrug*. I still play this game mostly for the SP.

Haha first post!

Anyway I always want to play DOOM but didn't have the time when it was released. Yesterday I downloaded the game and played it in my bed. I love the fast and mobile gunplay.

One thing I always dislike is the first person platforming. Unlike Dishonored or Deus Ex, I can always play stealth and think carefully what I can go or cannot. DOOM is always on the move which sometimes makes the platforming very frustrating because 1) I am not good at gauging distance 2) not sure which ledge is climbable

I don't like the MP, because people wanted to sell it to me as a slower Quake. But it's not like Quake at all. Decent, but not like the greatest Arena Shooter of all time.

Edit: I think I liked the very first closed alpha or beta a lot more than the later ones, because the already made weird changes, which felt more like COD.

Sorry if this has been asked (and answered) before, but if I buy this digital, can I only download SP content ?

I tried very hard to get used to the Joycons as several reviewers mentioned it clicks after a while. It never happend for me. Awful deadzone and uncomfortable position of the right stick, regardless of settings.

I only use the Switch in handheld mode, so no more Doom for me until an FPS joycon solution is released. I got reasonably ok at twitching then right stick to aim, but losing the ability to have precise control of aiming ruins the fun for me.

Ok but lets be honest, you cant play fps games hardcore without having a mouse and keyboard anyway. So this is ok.

Downloading the game. Did not intend to buy it at first. But the enthusiasm surrounding it and me wanting other IPs from Besthesda on the Switch, made me pull the trigger.

- Move, move, move. Standing in one spot and firing means a trip to the grave and the movement mechanics are sublime. You're going to want to master movement in combat. Jumping over enemies, strafing, using verticality to your advantage, all vital.

- Switch your weapons as often as possible. There's no two weapon limit here - you have a weapon wheel with two shotguns, a pistol, a rocket launcher, a minigun, a heavy machine gun, a plasma rifle and a plasma cannon. You pick these up as you progress through the game - starting with a pistol and shotgun - but once you've amassed your arsenal, you're going to want to be swapping often. Some enemies don't like rockets very much, some could eat eat rockets like cereal but don't take very kindly to a well placed shotgun shell to the head. Swapping is the name of the game here.

- Glory kills are vital to your survival. When enemies are low on health, they enter a staggered state. When they glow blue, you know they're ready to die. As you get close to them, they'll turn orange - that's your queue to melee them, locking you into a second long animation that will kill them instantly and drop health and ammo. You don't regenerate here, it's all about the pick-ups. Glory kills are the way to drop much needed supplies when you're in the heat of combat and can't venture out to scavenge for health packs and ammo boxes.

- Tying into the first point, movement is so essential because of the way bullets and projectiles work. Bullets and other explody things aren't hitscan, they're projectile based. This means that when an enemy shoots straight at your head, it's far from a death sentence - the bullet needs to travel and therefore, can and should be avoided. Everything in the game is dodgeable, this is why learning movement mechanics is so vital. Bob and weave and duck and jump over enemy attacks before they hit you. This is a double-edged sword though as your weapons behave the same way. You will need to learn to account for enemy movement when firing as they can and will avoid your shots by running circles around you.
Once you figure out how to lead your shots while moving around, you'll be dancing a beautiful ballet of death.

Enjoy one of the best shooters of all time buddy, wish I could experience it for the first time all over again but hey, the third time around isn't so bad either.

find the hidden plasma rifle in the second level and get the stun bomb upgrade asap, it will be YOUR NUMBER ONE engagement / disengagement tool. When you get the boots for the double jump, do the jump rune associated, and then get ready for some glorious awesomeness. Oh yeah do the double shotgun prowess thing quickly, its the best weapon in the entire game. it gets nutty real fast when you have the prowess done + blasting around with quad damage, trust me on that one lol

Playing with twin stick after so many years of using motion/ir control is really hard. But the MP is still fun

I'm so disappointed they didn't seperate the patch from multiplayer. I was really looking forward to Doom on the Switch but I don't want to support this false advertisement. Prior to release they said the mp download would be optional and now it's virtually mandatory.
And no, keeping airplane mode on all the time is not a solution. That's a messy workaround for a 60 Euro game.

Sorry to rain on your parade but that's how I feel about it right now. Might end up getting it nevertheless. Still annoying as hell (scnr).

Omg this game is so awesome...

First time playing this and I'm roughly 5 hours in.
The game/controls clicked after about 2 hours with me and now I feel like a badass. I haven't had so much fun with a shooter in a long time.
Love everything about this game. Gfx are nice, soundtrack is awesome and the gameplay is maybe the best for a first person shooter ever.

I think I actually will buy this game for my pc too and play it in all its glory on my 120hz monitor.
