I'm good until the end of 2019, however, if it does go away, I guess I will be embracing the full digital future with the tons of rewards points when linked to Sony Rewards & PlayStation Credit Card.

Occasional select Collector's Editions for the only physical then.

I have been replacing a lot of my physical with digital versions from these Flash Sales when they are in the $10 or less range anyhow.

Oddly enough Red Dead Redemption 2 has been removed from Best Buys website also (Physical I can't find, Digital says no longer availible)
I see some Reddit posts about how it was dropped from the site in mid-April, so it might be an unrelated thing.

I know their movie preorders sometimes have a habit of hopping on and off the site, so maybe it's the same deal here.

I know I'm probably not the norm, but GCU actually made me buy other stuff from Best Buy. It was a cascading effect. I would buy quite a few games from Best Buy which would put me towards reaching Elite status. Because of that, I would first look at Best Buy when buying other stuff too in order to hit that Elite status. Add on the bonus points you get for being an Elite member and the great deals with Black Friday, and in the habit of looking their first, I actually started hitting Elite Plus tier. It was like every thing kept adding up so I kept focusing more on Best Buy to hit that tier between GCU discounts, bonus points, additional reward certificates, etc. The catalyst was GCU because before that I hardly bought anything there. I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do moving forward.

That said, I think people need to realize that even without GCU, Best Buy still is one of the best places to get deals on games if you're not buying on release date. They have sales more frequently than any other retailer and have price drops a lot quicker. Heck South Park on Switch already is on sale for $20 off, and then you add in GCU and that brings a $60 game down to $32. I'm going to miss those combined sales, but the initial $20 off is still better than anyone else out there. So I think once the initial shock wears off, I'll still probably buy stuff at Best Buy because their sales on games are still great compared to everyone else. GCU just made it that much better but they still have great deals without it. Black Friday even without GCU was still some of the best deals around on games and movies. So I think giving up on Best Buy is a bit short sighted.
GCU also made me a more frequent buyer at Best Buy. But maybe we're the exception than the norm hence why Best Buy is scrapping the service altogether. It sucks because their game selections and sales are good. Me and my GF managed to get Mario Odyssey for $40 before tax (it was discounted to $50 + another $10 from GCU). It was a massive steal.

Web site doesn't even show the price I get with GCU automatically anymore. Just shows the regular price. Guess I'm done shopping there December next year.

I guess I'll stop shopping at BB once my membership ends then. That's the only reason I still have to shop at Best Buy.

I agree they are one of the better retail stores. Granted I am elite (probably won't qualify without video games next year) they treated me like a king, no questions asked and nice/helpful. They also seem to remember customers well because between a Three different stores ,employees remembered previous convos

Same here. It caused me to purchase my home theater equipment back in 2016, and kept me "loyal" due to rewards and savings. But since they already halved the rewards, and now this is going away, I will definitely shop around when I am ready to upgrade again.

Best Buy just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about purchasing video game (I'm an expert), but discounts and flexible purchasing options are huge parts of it. It's not like it is on Amazon where you can remain successful by selling games at MSRP. If you take away the ability to get discounted games, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the gaming public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase video games for any system, nor will they be able to get discounts on other gaming-related things such as amiibo and leftover preorder bonuses. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Best Buy has alienated an entire market with this move.

Best Buy, publicly apologize and reinstate Gamers Club Unlocked or you can kiss your business goodbye.

Memes aside, I'm really going to miss GCU. I've saved so much over the years, and stacking GCU with $10 preorder certs and bonuses was just the best. VISA Checkout discounts were amazing too.

can't forget about amiibo discounts either :/

Had a feeling this was going to end soon, the savings I got from a Special Edition actually made up for the cost I originally paid for GCU and then some.

I don't think they should've gotten rid of the service altogether, it should've been revamped to provide an incentive without breaking the bank.

Good to know! If there isn't some cool collectors I wait until a month before to pre order so kinda fell off my radar

End of an era, GCU has been slowly degrading over time but it will be missed. I added like 6 years a few years ago when you could get it with a "phone" and a $2 sim counted but I'd expect them to shut down the program entirely in the next 12 months and give people who have years left a gift card or something

I'd expect amazon to cut its 20% pre order discount soon and gamestop to do a little dance, I know a lot of people who had switched from GS to GCU but I wonder how many will just go digital now

I bought $5k worth of stuff last year from Best Buy. Most of it because the GCU was a suberp marketing move to get me to check their stores and website. Without it I don't think I will shop from them as much.

All the people saying this are the reason it's stopping lol.
They were losing money on all of them if they were just buying games with GCU.

I'm sure for a lot it's true, but not all. Like I outlined in my other post, GCU was the gateway that gave me incentive to buy other stuff there. Without that gateway of already building up reward certificates and hitting their Elite and Elite Plus rewards tier, there's nothing really tying me to Best Buy anymore. It was more like, they already have me hooked for all this money on games that it made hitting those tiers worth while. My first instinct was I guess I'm done shopping there which is a bit of a knee jerk reaction, but it reminded me of how Prime was in the early days. Because I had it, and their prices were cheaper, and they were offering things like GC for preorders, Amazon became the first place I would look to buy stuff. Once they got rid of all that, it no longer was the case for me and I moved on to Best Buy because they offered incentives to look there first. I also admit I'm probably not the norm, but GCU for at least some was an incentive to buy there because once you got in, they offered you reasons to stay.

Ooph, this sucks. Well at least I still have a subscription until February 2019, and I can't say I didn't get my money's worth.

Hopefully ebay keeps doing 15% off gift cards as when paired with the 5% back automatically from the eShop and the % back from the Playstation store with PS+ it was about as good.

Same here. I purchased a 65" KS8000, PS4 Pro, Switch and Xbox One X and 20+ games in the last 18 months alone, plus a phone upgrade, laptop and blu-rays. I am done if there is no GCU...

I mean... I won't.
even if I don't have the 20% off I still have the huge value of being able to sell or trade games or lend them to friends. (or split them with friends)

plus, a b2g1 sale is likely to happen around most major releases and I don't mind waiting a few weeks to save 33%.

Why didn't they just raise the price? Hardcore gamers would easily pay double, it still saves money for us.

FUCK

I Tweeted at them. Do your part nerds.

They are still going to honor the existing subs right? I just got mine for the first time ever in December. I will be fucking pissed if they cancel it early

So assuming amazon pulls the plug on their 20% off pre-orders as well, where are people going to buy their games now?

You know before GCU and Prime discouny, there was a time when people waited for online deals to be posted at CAG. I'll probably revert to that againand wait for deals on games and not buy as many Collectors editions.

I'm still good until OCT 2020 back when they had that glitch 6 years ago. Got GCU for like $30 for so many years.
It's sad but I haven't been able to use it since I've been out of country.

that is what partially surprises me.
it started at 120 I think (with promos to make it $30 before dropping it to $30 in general)
they could have moved it back up to that and even potentially changed it to limit 1 copy per game and kept it going for a while.

I was thinking about getting a best buy credit card for the 5% rewards, but I will likely just get a target or amazon one now. Most likely target since I think they currently run the most b2g1 sales.

that being said my shopping with best buy likely isn't over.
even without GCU they still have a number of games on sale that I want (the GCU on top was just a nice plus) and even if amazon price matches those sales usually, I would rather shop with the store that originally posts the sale than amazon as I want amazon to do real sales again and not just price match everyone.

Agreed. I bought most of my games there, and being close to elite , when we bought new appliances we went there over other stores. If I'm not getting game discount I won't bother buying anything else there either.
