Played for 2 hours on Switch last night, I like it

I find turn-based games are the only games I really enjoy playing undocked; this is exactly what I need

Yea I can agree with that for sure. It's perfect for Handheld mode.

Just wish it wasn't so dark. Even with the Switch's brightness all the way up. Need to check the games options to see if there's a brightness option there too...

I've heard people say this, but I haven't encountered any issues yet with the brightness. Just past the second dungeon, and everything's been very visible, except a couple cases where things were beside torches that were meant to be lit.

Not sure why people keep harping on the price. Build the bridge and get over it, games have always had price discrepancies on different platforms.

This is also technically a new release, you can't expect them to put months into a game and sell it cheaper on platforms it's been on for a year. Makes no sense.

If you don't like the launch price go and buy it elsewhere that's most likely why there is a sale on other platforms. If you want the game on switch for portability then buy it or wait for a sale. This price harping is annoying.

Anyway I just unlocked Red Monika and holy crap she is awesome that assassinate ability is godlike and her stealth and evade is just awesome. Play Monika, Garrison and Knolan although Knolan may get swapped out, guy isn't lasting too long at the moment.

It's a valid complaint.

The game came out about half a year ago originally. It was $30 everywhere. Then this release charges $10 more than other versions launch MSRP and that is paired with a half off sale from the already lower MSRP of other versions the same week it comes to Switch.

The other versions being on sale is just poor optics, I wouldn't hold that against them asking full price at launch. But the Switch tax is bullshit. It's a policy third parties have adopted and based on through the digital marketplace that Nintendo should address. If the price increase is due to the card media for physical releases fine, then charge there and let digital be price comparable with other platforms.

I'm sure this won't be addressed for the systems entire life though, which is unfortunate because these price disparities will catch up to the indie scene as the library expands. Sales success will become top heavy like is always the case on Nintendo platforms.

Hey guys, don't get me wrong, I have the Switch version coming in the mail. :lol

I mean, what else is there to explain except Switch Tax? It's been 10 bucks more ever since it was available to pre-order, digitally and physically. I'm dealing with the extra cost, but what more can you say to someone who's asking why it's 10$ more?

I was wanting to get this game digitally but for some weird ass reason this game is 54.99 on the CDN eshop versus 39.99 physical.

That is totally the Switch tax. People are upset because its on sale for 50% off on PSN and Steam. There was a small window where the Switch physical version was also 50% off on Amazon but it went down pretty quick.

Didnt really matter to me, I wanted to play it on the go with the Switch. I would have continued playing it months ago if I wanted to play it on PSN/Steam. Just glad people are buying it, no matter where they get it.

Have the devs acknowledged the sleep mode bug on the Switch? (game keeps counting down on your played time if you sleep the switch.)

I don't think they've sent out an official email, so just in case you aren't aware, codes are up and available for backers now.

Currently downloading.

Will try it out tomorrow after work!

I completely agree it's a valid complaint for more than a few people, but it derails the OT. You may think it should, but it's been discussed lots and lots of times already, and it's a thin slope imo, with the next step being that anything bothering anyone about a game is fair game and OTs will be derailed left and right.
That's imo of course, I will raise this with a mod and hear their opinion. Not going to complain about anyone, but this is starting to get really tiring when even in a game's OT, instead of discussing the game people discuss price more than the game. And again, you might say people indeed should, but replace "price" with any other word, and you might see why it is not ok.

Wow. I saw the eshop price and was all "okay, fine" but if I weren't a kickstarter, that price would make me just go buy a physical copy instead, and this is without knowing that it's actually even cheaper.

Gotta be an error, right?

Ugh, I really want this game and I have the other consoles but I'm on a 6-month trip and only have my Switch. I don't think the price would be as big of an issue if the prices on other platforms didn't fluctuate as much.

Pricing is a valid point and worth discussing. Especially for the pubs and devs if they're listening.

The complaining about pricing criticisms, that's actually derailing and probably not a worthy discussion.

I paid £26.99 for a 25-30 hour RPG which looks nice and is well made, with deep combat and progression systems. Don't see an issue.

In other news: the game is fab! Finished the first dungeon and really getting the hang of the combat systems now.

Can someone tell me if there are your typical towns with NPCs and all ? Don't wanna watch too many videos, but all I saw were dungeons after dungeons.

There's a central town that acts as your base with a few NPCs that act as merchant types / minor quest givers. But it's not a traditional RPG in the sense of wandering into towns and loading up on quests.

Just FYI: OT is for discussing the game. You may make a new thread about Switch pricing if you wish.

You heard the lady, now stop whining.
Please don't be disrespectful of the comments that, while are indeed derailing a discussion of the game itself and should move to another thread, are perfectly legitimate concerns and not just "whining".

I'm greatly enjoying the game and the comic so far. It's perfect on the Switch and I hope they find success on the platform. This and Octopath Traveller should scratch that turn-based rpg itch quite nicely and finally give me some playtime on this console which has been largely on standby this year.

Which whining? If related to my post - I was admitting how nice looking the game is and that that in and of itself could be reason enough to get it (despite the price actually, which I didn't mention at all). No price whining/criticism intended.
I do think that a moderator making the rules is enough to stick to those, eh?

E: Oh, joking - I see.

Finally got notification from Amazon that the game is on its way. I'm curious, are there different difficulty levels (as in easy, normal, hard) or is it one size fits all?

So I got the game and I only played for a few minutes but I was wondering if there was a way to more or less always have challenge (not impossible, just challenging) during the game.
So far battles are... well, let's say it just shows how it works, to die you'd have to do it on purpose.

I read there was difficulties for dungeons and that just picking hard could be close to impossible, is it really ? Is normal challenging, then you pick hard and run the dungeon again... and it's the new "possible challenge"... or does it work differently ?

I am really interested in the game, do I need knowledge of the comics to be able to enjoy it fully or is there some sort of recap on how the team met?

Don't recall a difficulty setting in the game, but you can select different difficulties for dungeons. So, when you get to a new dungeon, you can play it in either easy, normal, heroic or legendary (legendary was locked until you completed the dungeon once, but I believe they later patched this so you can go legendary the first time through). I did all dungeons on Heroic first time through and didn't replay any dungeons. Difficulty was fine.

I guess it would only make it better. I didn't read the comics and still enjoyed it. Though I did feel the game doesn't have much character exposition/building. It's most likely budget reasons though I am guessing.

Random mobs in JRPGs are not supposed to be a challenge.

The difficulty levels are more for replaying when you have a higher level.

Knolan is really annoying me, the guy dies way too quickly, Red Monika and Garrison out perform this guy by a country mile, so bad that I switch the level 15 Knolan for a level 10 Bretto who lasts way longer in battle against higher level characters. Am I missing something with this character?

Knolan is probably not so great early on. He'll pick up later on once you get more perk points.

Keep playing,it gets challenging later on and yes you have difficulty levels for the dungeons, the game even tells you how hard it will be if you raise it...it also keeps your dungeon progress, even if you exit and go grind a bit if it's too hard...you can also leave,go rest at theTavern, switch members if you want to level them up equally etc etc...unless they changed some of that recently, theres a lot of ways to make the game challenging but not impossible...

You could always use the starter gear and not level up skills as a way to artificially make the game a bit harder.

Ah I see, I thought I read in a patch that characters level up outside of battle but doesn't seem to be the case. I hate grinding in any game and doubt this will change that so if he only gets good later on I doubt I will pick him up unless there is an easy way to get XP later in the game.

Thanks for all the answers !

Not a fan of that type of playing. I'd prefer using every gears and abilities to create nice tactics depending on situations/team.

Don't recall a difficulty setting in the game, but you can select different difficulties for dungeons. Thanks for that ! I exactly hoped it would be that way. Perfect.

I actually kinda disagree with that. I think random mobs being weak and boring is bad design. The best example I could give you is with the Saga series especially recently Saga Scarlet Grace. You fight battles with difficulties going from easy, normal, hard, to very hard and even normal can be challenging depending on the enemies, your strategy and so on. In my playthrough I did a lot less battles that felt easy than the opposite.
And I looooooved that. Felt extremely rewarding.
The more you experience challenge, the better you play. There's nothing more boring that 100s of boring farm battles just to have 1 challenge. It's much more interesting to have only 10-20 challenging ones with much better reward than the 100s. Quality / Quantity

Don't worry I wasn't complaining, it was purely curiosity. I like how the game feels and really want to continue. I even plan to try to read the comics because the opening "scene" (not the animated one, the new game one) was intriguing.

Ah I see, I thought I read in a patch that characters level up outside of battle but doesn't seem to be the case. I hate grinding in any game and doubt this will change that so if he only gets good later on I doubt I will pick him up unless there is an easy way to get XP later in the game.
What about trying some dungeons in harder difficulty with new crew (or half new half main team), to take advantage of new loot and challenge ? Could be a solution if it seems less farming for you . It would for me.

You will probably ditch Knolan soon anyway ;)
That's sad. I was looking forward to get him. Is he really that hopeless ?
Edit : I guess that is the answer to my question ha ha :

There is in a way because now you can equip a level 20 armor or weapon or accessory on a level 10 character...I mean the game is probably beatable with any combination of characters, but it depends on the Perks a lot and how you manage that,I screwed myself a bit with that so I had a hard time in the late chapters but that was before the changes...levelling up Bretto now is quicker(he was level 11 and would of never levelled him up to 30 with the old system)...I still feel you dont get enough perk points when you level up though

I have been doing the dungeons on Legendary difficulty, it's been good fun and has made them last a bit longer, Junkerstown took me 3 tries on Legendary before I got through it, however the items I get from the chest is usually way worse than anything I have crafted myself. I don't think I have used any equipment from the legendary crates I got from dungeons, maybe just bad rng.

I suppose if there is no limit to equipment level that can be equipped then that could me consolation, anyway will get to that bridge when I get there. Pretty sure my team will be Red Monika, Garrison and Alumon but that is dependent on what type of character Alumon is, from the opening video I at least hope he can fill a support role.

It is surprising to me that out of all the patching, non party members not getting exp was the one thing they didn't fix.

His heals are pretty much a necessity in the area and in the dungeons after you find him)

Hmm, that's odd. Someone else mentioned this, so I decided to test it. It definitely did add time to my game. Not that it should matter, but are you playing docked or undocked? (Undocked here.)
