It's over. It seemed like many wanted to hate the movie before it was out. They can now label it racist and throw dirt on it.

Yep, cause that is totally what is happening here...except it isn't.

What's really happening is, you have a degree of responsibility when you set up shots and what your depiction is on screen. If the scene Chaw is describing happens, as he says it does, with the people involved, it is a bad look.

The imagery is one you could have excluded or thrown rubber alien heads on or whatever.

You have you be more aware than that when making a film.

Ah, fucked around and accidentally clicked and saw the real spoilers. Fuck.

Now I'm reading the film freak review. Star Wars man.... I'm hoping this isn't as bad as the review makes it seems but SW has a bad history it seems so intent on upholding

It's a human planet. And the town this takes place in is Hans home town. Temple of Doom comparison makes no sense.

I'd be concerned if even just one other person had a raised eyebrow to this scene but he seems the only one who took it this way.

That part was supposed to be played by Michael K Williams as well.

There is no point in continuing this when I haven't seen the film. I am simply going on what the reviewer said and that sounds like a bad look, image wise so I commented on it.

I guess we will see what others report when they see it.

The OP of this thread is one of the worst OP for a review thread. No reviews, no RT link, nothing.

As for the movie, it seems to be the definition of bang average. Reading the reviews hasn't picked up my interest that was left on the floor after the trailers. As with Rogue One, this is a Star Wars movie that I will probably not see at the cinema. I will wait until it will be available on Netflix or Disney's streaming service or whatever, there's really no rush. Going to see Deadpool 2 instead.

Since it's just one reviewer commenting on it, I'm gonna guess it doesn't play out like he describes in the film.

I refuse to believe we could have a plethora of reviewers who can't spot obvious problematic shit.

dude, whole ass production studios make tone deaf and problematic decisions all the time. What is this: "no one else saw it mess"?

It's not even the one reviewer saying it that makes it believable, it's every other Star Wars film that makes it more than believable

and it seems like the reviewer who spotted it is a Chinese dude who was probably looking for how well the host of old white folks who made this movie handled the POC in the film

From the plot break down (very minor spoilers)
Han and Qi'ra's home town on corellia is controlled by gangsters. The whole place is one giant shithole. Everyone is poor and at the mercy of the mob boss. Including han and qi'ra. Scene takes place there.

Not one other review even hinted at thinking it comes across racist.[/Spoiler]

As I already got spoiled on a plot point I decided to just read the lot as I had no interest in watching this other than on a stream/download.

Sounds ok and sure kids will love it, but loads of meh. It just seems like a story that was not necessary, Kashdan's or not.

Real shame too.

The vast majority of movie reviewers are white dudes, so I would not be surprised AT ALL that none of them saw the problem with this.

I didn't say that studios don't make these kinda dumb decisions.

Of course they do.

I said that I refuse to believe we have an entire swathe of critics, reviewers, what have you, and not one of them before this reviewer, could spot the very obvious problematic issue described.

Yes, that's hard for me to believe. That we are at a point where movie reviewers are missing even basic problematic shit.

I'm not saying it ain't true, it's just hard for me to believe. If it ends up being the case, then that's a huge damning indictment on the entire reviewer base.

Just to give you some reference, Francis Ha averaged something like 35 takes per scene, and even normal films like Harry Potter get into the 30+ take range, so it can vary wildly from film to film. How many improv takes do you think a Taika Waititi or Adam McKay movie has?

I really do believe it was largely a creative difference thing, by all accounts Kasdan wanted "Silverado" in space, Lord and Miller seemed to want something closer to GotG/Ragnarok, and Lucasfilm and Kennedy sided with Kasdan. It also didn't seem like lots of improv mixed all that well with the Lucasfilm way of making Star Wars movies.
I dunno, it seemed like a really big mess; they didn't want so many takes and may have thought there was valuable time being wasted. It seems like LF messed up the most by not understanding who they signed up with. It also sounde like L&M's ideas weren't very good (there were reports of an overly silly tone, one even stated that it was shaping up more like Ace Ventura than Star Wars). Or maybe they had great ideas, but those ideas just didn't translate well into the SW universe. Seems like there were a million wonky variables and that LF ultimately made a poor choice from the beginning because L&M's vision seemed to directly contradict the Kasdan's intended result.

The weird thing to me is.. how do you make that decision so late (sounded like almost the entire movie was shot)? How is this not something that comes up early on, before shooting even takes place?

Pretty bizarre. Luckily though it sounds like they were able to salvage what was sure to have been a disaster.

As the RT score edges to 69-70, this will likely be the first Disney marvel and Star Wars movie which is not certified fresh on RT since Thor the dark world 5 years ago

It's kind of odd that we're just now finding out about a "racist" (I use quotes because we have no idea how accurate it is) scene in Solo.

My money is that it doesn't actually appear as described by the reviewer. If it does I will gladly eat my words.

It's a safe and simple movie. No problems with that. Some of y'all need to step away from the computer if a number upsets you so much. Shit is embarrassing

Darth Maul actually in this, or what?
That would be kind of weird, no?

There is not a face on Earth big enough to contain the facepalm I just did reading these last few posts. Christ.
