Eurogamer: Leaks suggest Retro Studios making Star Fox racing spin-off (also heard by EG's sources)

The inherent problem with this discussion is that we don't actually know what a Star Fox racer really entails.
You imagine a straightforward futuristic racing game or a kart game, i imagine Arwings and equivalent crafts roaring through nebulas, asteroid fields, solar flares, dyson swarms while simultenously trying to shoot down each other and the obstacle enemies (even bosses) getting in their way.
Why is people acting as if the other project was confirmed to be canned? Lots of games struggle at certain part of the development, the first Metroid Prime being an example.
Yeah, if it includes shooting and/or different online modes that go beyond standard racing it'll be a thing on its own.
People often don't know what they want. A soccer game but with cars instead of people, who would want to play that?
I've watched multiple YouTube videos where they said "yeah I had sources that told me this too". Wtf how many peoole had "sources" on this game?

If it has long A to B race (instead of short races with laps. Imagine Space Dakar with 20-30 minute races), each race could be a whole set piece laden adventure where you get to participate in crazy shit on your way to the finish.
Like imagine two racers locked in a deadly dogfight and then a giant space worm boss attacks as they temporarily join forces to take it down.
I'm going in too deep with my fanfiction, but just imagine.

I wanted to add no reputable source has said the name of the game is Star Fox Grand Prix. Eurogamer only said they've heard of the game, but not sure of the name.
I guess there's a chance the name is different for those who don't like it.

I think he means: The thought, that this Star Fox game somehow spits in the face of F-Zero and Mario Kart fans, is stupid.
The only negative here would be that the supposed logo had an Arwing in it.

Yeah maybe if F-Zero Racing was flying through space they might've had a point, but they don't.
Did I say that? I only remember saying that I heard it was an old IP being placed in a new genre.

Star Fox is literally a space game so yeah it is suited for a space racer :)
But if it DOES end up playing like F-Zero I'll have to sympathize with F-Zero fans and join them in wondering it couldn't have been that instead.

The ship can turn into a tank too so it's completely feasible to expect transforming vehicles.
I ponder if it was Eternal Darkness 2 and Retro just couldn't nail enough decent insanity effects.
I'm a F-Zero fan and I'm not crazy enough to think Star Fox is gonna exist on the expense of Fzero.

Same here. Kinda a shame. I'd love to see a horror game by them.
Im kinda thinking it will be much more of a traditional Star Fox game but with a focus on speed. You will have shooting and flying trough rings for boosts and dodge rolls and stuff, yet your main objective will be to get to the finish as fat as you can, whatever the track may be. I think there will be different vehicles like tanks and submarines too. So the racing theme could work well for this IP. Initially I thought it would be a horrible idea but after reading posts and thinking about it a little, Im kind of excited, especially with this coming out of Retro.
May be as Star Fox nears completion some of the studio can move over to the second project and bring together something worthy of the studio :)

Metroid fans are loopy, that's for sure. And I say that as a Metroid fan.
Which is why, after three Prime games, Retro project news is always followed by passionate reactions both positive and negative.
Precisely. Nobody wants to be traced back as the source of the leak and catch the blame for it, because they can get in serious trouble and lose industry privileges or even their job.
Once it's public, everyone else with the same information doesn't really stand to lose anything by keeping quiet.

Those trademarks from yesterday shows F-Zero game may be coming. A whole bunch of trademarks were made, but F-Zero, Star Fox, Smash and Pikmin had different patents.

Just playing devil's advocate, could Nintendo properly support three racing franchises? Could they all co-exist without stepping on each other's toes?

Can't have them working on a genre/IP that you dislik- I mean isn't worth the developers time.
I've never played anything from Retro ( got Metroid Prime Trilogy in my backlog right now ). Have they ever made a bad game?
I can't deny that. I will never forget going into Metroid-centric forums when Prime 1 was announced and reading the bashing from a bunch of people on the fact that the game was being made by ''dumb americans'', good times.
Ok not really, but it is somewhat nostalgic in a weird way, got a flashback to that on the Bandai Namco Singapore Prime 4 rumor thread.
The person who told me Retro is contributing in a small way to MPT for Switch also told me racing games are coming to Switch from Nintendo.
If you read Takahashi and Koizumis quotes from last year it sounded like they want to bring back a lot of old IP's.

No. Even their worst game (Metroid Prime 3 IMO) is still a really good game.
I don't know why I tried this but if you visit https://www.nintendo.co.jp/switch/fzero/ it's got a 302 (moved temporarily) redirect in place that sends you to the switch index. If you try something else in the URL it just 404s. Believe?

No, only great to amazing games. Everytime people are afraid because someone left Retro, yet that's normal for any western studio. Their game show that.
