What a dumb idea.

Nintendo really seem hellbent on not giving people a proper SF game again (That isn't ruined by gimmicky/shit controls like Zero and Command were.). If this is true, of course... hopefully it's bullshit.

I'm good at pattern recognition:

Rumor: Star Fox Grand Prix

Denial: No way these rumors are true. half a decade to make a Furry racer? Nah.

Anger: F Nintendo. F Retro. This will bomb so hard and be so awful.

Depression: How could Nintendo waste its only Western talent on a furry racer? Why God?

Bargaining= "Surely Retro has a bigger project in development. This is just a side project! Yes! They will announce their mature adventure game soon...probably after E3 because it's an early 2019 game!

Acceptance: The game is not so bad. Maybe one of the best racers ever?

Year 2022: Rumor: Star Fox Grand Prix 2: Funky Fox Edition is about to be announced.

Denial: Retro must have spent the last three years on that epic hyper-realistic adventure game finally! No way would they waste the last three years on a sequel to a furry racer, even though the game was amazing. No way. No F'in way.

And it goes on and on and on and on...

:D

Spoiler: I want their epic adventure game too :(

I do wonder where in the "timeline" star fox racing would take place. After command making the joke ending canon? After Assault where a lot of member are either old or dead? Or After Zero which is a bit of a reboot.

I guess it only really matters for the roster, hope it's not after command since that messed things up pretty hard.

You hate it when companies want to make money? Demand for it? I love F-Zero, but that IP is not beloved. It has a niche audience that loves it, but the games do not perform well at all.

Oh boy. Going to that lazy argument of "What a waste of a great studio now?"
It's not as beloved as it should be because there hasn't been a game in 15 years. I'm pretty sure people had a similar feeling before Metroid or Starfox got revivals. Nintendo knows for a fact that they have one of the largest treasure troves of even mildly successful IPs, so even if they don't feel like it would be a good investment to use one of their internal teams to make a game, I can guarantee that there are other studios more than willing to work on the IP for them (probably while under some degree if supervision of course).

Not saying that this means the game will necessarily be good, but didn't Metroid Prime have similar pre-launch murmurings of a trouble dev cycle and many worried about the state of the game?

Realizing that this could actually use flight instead of just being F-ZERO has opened me up to the idea, and now I'm sort of interested? I really hope that the movement is solid

It's highly probably this game is built around flight.

If that turns about to be true, why the hell would they bother reviving F-Zero with it's hovercrafts?

You all are assuming an awful lot thinking this one's gonna be like F-Zero.

what? I never said it would be like f-zero... i said that making retro studio working on a racing game that is not f-zero is bad! This has nothing to do with the style of the game here

I'm very intrigued with this. lol at the people already writing this off. Retro have a seller résumé, I have faith whatever they are doing.

Maybe the starfox team crash land into the F-Zero universe, that would be amazing for me. Both seem to fit each others universe unlike the fake starfox x metroid rumor before.

Star Fox has literally always been all about the gimmicks since the very first game.

Yes. Retro also dealt with internal strife after Prime 3 wrapped up.

Studios deal with this type of thing pretty regularly. Games get cancelled, projects have trouble getting off the ground. It happens, even to the best teams.

star fox adventures is barely a star fox game

well yeah

but to be fair, neither is this

James McCloud is dead at this point in the time line, but also shows up. At the end of the game you fight Andross.

I will say, F-Zero is my all-time favorite racing series, so if this is just a spiritual successor with a Star Fox skin, I'm all over it (provided it's good). I much prefer the Star Fox characters over the ones in F-Zero, anyway.

If they make it fast and it its possible to use offensive weapons on your competitors then this would be amazing. This would be doubly true if there are like black market weapon shops you can upgrade your ship in.

Some of you may remember when in 2012, I learned that Retro Studios was at one time considering to develop a game called Star Fox - Metroid: Fusion Saga. Paul Gale Network ultimately learned that it didn't make it into development, but was a pitched title, nonetheless.

A month ago, by the same sources, I was shared Star Fox: Grand Prix. Is it actually in development? I don't know, but at the very least, there's credibility to the game being legit in some capacity.

We'll see before too long if it's actually coming out or was left on the table.

You guys remember Boss Doggie? Not sure if he came to ERA but he should be a playable character in this game

I have nothing against their decision. I'm saying I would be dissapointed. That's me. I don't think it's a waste of talent.
Yes, I understand different opinions on the game.
The latter part of my message was directed to some users who seem to know better than Retro which kind of game they need to make to use their talent.

Star Fox has literally always been all about the gimmicks since the very first game.

It's mainly the control gimmicks in those two games (Touch screen, motion controls, etc) I'm complaining about. Gimmickry in the gameplay mechanics or whatever I can live with so long as I don't hate how the game feels to play.

Diddy Kong racing was so fucking good and Retro has never made a bad game (that i know of) and there hasn't been a truly great Star Fox game in over 20 years so leeeeeet's fucking gooooo.

Also if you're mad about no F-Zero, if it's any consolation, Captain Falcon will be an unlockable character 1000%

I mean... sure?
Make it as good as something like Diddy Kong Racing (big single player mode with explorable hub, boss races/fights, etc.) and I'd definitely be down for it.

But as others have said I feel like just doing a new F-Zero game would make way more sense. Put in Star Fox characters and have flying sections (like gliding in Mario Kart) if they have to have them, but I just want super fast futristic racing with a great single player goddamnit!

Fair enough, there's no reason to assume that this will have weird controls so you should be good there...hopefully! :P

If it's a mix of dogfights and race it could be pretty cool honestly. I'll be mad if it just turn out to be a slightly more refined F Zero game, as i dislike Star Fox in general as a IP, which already had it's chance, was a failure, so the entire "but Star fox has 11 fans against the 10 F-Zero one" argument is kinda moot.
It's a huge wait and see, on top of being a rumor for now, but i will trust Retro Studios to make something great regardless of my opinion.

I would bet good money that this is one of the reasons why Star Fox 2 was released last year, to gain awareness for this new game. Fay and Miyu are members of Star Fox going forward, probably.

Not sure why people are getting angry at this?

Retro is a very capable studio and the idea behind this rumored game sounds plausible and fun.

I mean, the concept of a new diddy kong racing inspired futuristic game featuring star fox characters is amazing to me. If they nail the hub world and have a decent story it has everything to be a fantastic one.

I went ahead and added Kotaku's article to the OP.

From Jason Schreier:

We've heard the same from a source plugged into goings-on at Nintendo, and we've also heard from two other sources that the Austin, Texas-based Retro had a separate project that went through a rocky development cycle and may in fact be canceled. The person familiar with this Star Fox racing game confirmed many of the details that have been floating around the web today, on Reddit and 4chan and Eurogamer and many other places. Grand Prix is said to be a lot like Diddy Kong Racing in that, unlike Nintendo's other major racing series, Mario Kart, this game will have a story mode and boss battles.
