Reporting on CNN makes this sound way worse than just a benign kidney issue.

benign simply means, in this case, that the issue she has hasn't turned bad yet but has the potential to. That it's dormant, basically. And better to take care of that before it does turn malevolent .
Benign likely meaning not malignant or fatal in this particular case. It might be something that wouldn't kill her, but could still be painful or hard to live with.
It may be (very) uncomfortable, but not deadly or otherwise interrupt her bodily functions.

Surprised she went to Walter Reed to do the procedure seeing that they are incompetent and anytime you hear the name is because they've done something wrong.
The article says it's benign. If it comes out that this was more serious than what is literally being reported, who can say joking about this is off-limits?

More like there's world events occurring that the main stream media usually ignores (as there's no mention of the killings of Palestinian people on the CNN page), so they decide to dedicate their attention to this.
I was going to make a joke about Putin poisoning her but that's a little too dark even for me. Hopefully (and probably) not.

The typical pattern on these things (going back to well before Trump) is if there is anything serious, they won't disclose it until after they get better or someone's in the ICU, so we'll see what happens in a week.
