I'd assume Star Fox Racing would have some F-Zero characters and Samus.

If it's only circuit-based I'd be disappointed in it. A open world sci-fi Forza Horizon-type game would be pretty awesome though.

You know, people have been talking about the deterioration of Retro Studios and I have to wonder where the reciepts are. They've been making stellar game after stellar game.

Well they've been relegated to Donkey Kong duty for the past decade.

This is a studio that made the Metroid Prime games and was expected to continue making games like that. Donkey Kong really does feel like a step back, and a waste of talent. Tons of the Metroid Prime people seem to have left the studio over the years, probably because of this.

I wouldn't have a problem with the Returns games if it was a side project or something. But this is what Retro, Nintendo's very best western studio, has been working on non stop for over a decade. Honestly another Returns game would be a slap in the face for me, ESPECIALLY since Tropical Freeze just launched on Switch.

I can only hope that whatever game Retro brings along doesn't become an object of internet outrage that goes on to rub off on the games media, artificially cooling the game's reception until they throw a couple more nines for a re-release on Switch 2.
If Star Fox Racing is real then Nintendo deserves the negativity. They need to use resources to make Star Fox an actual good IP again instead of spinoffs.

Retro making a Star Fox Racing game on paper gives me an instinctively negative reaction. But then I consider the following
1) Diddy Kong Racing influence ala campaign/adventure mode is why DKR is still my favourite kart racer, and why I've felt the racing genre is so bafflingly stagnant. I'd very much welcome its return.
2) Retro's pedigree is literally 5 for 5 in terms of outstanding consistency in design quality and they're yet to make a single game I didn't love.

So yeah. E3 reveal, months of bitching, followed by it being one of the best games in the genre. Par for course.

Wow, didn't know you were so entitled. Let me call retro studios on the phone now and let hem know how much they failed you

Y'all gotta stop...Emily posted her rumor on the 3rd. This guy is parroting of info from that and this thread way too closely.

Also remember she wasn't even sure of the accuracy of her rumor either. It doesn't have to be true.

He also quotes Liam R's post as proof, when Liam wasn't actually hinting at the game at the time.

This new rumour is a guess, at best. I highly *highly* doubt Nintendo would use "grand prix" in the title as well, frankly. The concept of the game itself is fine, but 'Star Fox Grand Prix'? Nah.

Making games that are hailed as some of the pinnacles in their genre isn't much of a step back.

And really, a studio making games in a genre you don't care for doesn't speak for a loss in talent.

Even if it were to be a better game than most of the franchise output combined?

Do you know which Metroid Prime people left, and how many of them? I always see people saying this but I've never actually seen a list or amount of people. I think it's become a regurgitated talking point.

Also Retro wanted to work on DKCR since they were tired of Metroid. They wanted to make TF too, Nintendo has given them a lot of leeway on making what they want to make.

If Star Fox Racing is real then it'll probably be the best racing game I've ever played, if their track record is anything to go by. Like a couple others have said, it'll be really sad when the community tears this game down unjustly.

Edit: Even while typing this, somebody says they are on Donkey Kong duty lmao. Yeah sure. "Sigh.. We have no passion for this project. I guess we'll just make one of the best sidescrollers ever, on our second attempt, filled to the brim with new ideas in a genre that's decades old. Really sucks we aren't making a shooter though.."

Personally I would HOPE that Retro is working on a new AAA IP. Anything else would be really underwhelming.

I could see them doing a lot of good things with F-Zero or Star Fox (Provided Miyamoto isn't involved)

We'll just have to see.

I'm not doubting the quality of the game. I won't be surprised if it's considered one of the greatest racing games ever.

If it had a Diddy Kong Racing Adventure Mods that's cool. But I wished they'd leave it as a new IP. I'm not a fan of any company making spinoffs when the mainline series isn't doing well.

You might have a point if Retro's quality dropped off, but it didn't. They wanted to do DK and made one of the greatest 2D platformers ever. They're just as good as they were during their Metroid Prime Days.

If Star Fox racing is real, then maybe it'll come out this year. It should have online, which Nintendo is pushing. I have to think Retro completed it by now.

Well to be fair, we would have to see if the game even exists. Which is something I doubt.

Also, weren't some of you touting the idea of them having made two games instead of one?

Could be the explaratory game while the other game is AAA action adventure or whatever.

On the other hand, the reaction to double announcement of Star Fox FUCKING RACING GAME and FUCKING DONKEY KONG would be a sight to behold.

I think the game does exist. I have very good reason to believe Star Fox racing is the game.

I did speculate Retro has two games going since the guys LinkedIn had "exploratory game" he worked on for several years and then moved on to his "current project".

One of my dream scenarios for Retro would be them taking on an ambitious Star Fox game. Think Star Fox Adventures but done right. Open world space hub with planets to visit, with Star Fox 64 missions in between, and Uncharted like third person gunplay and cut scene storytelling. I think there is a ton of potential here, and in the context of a game like this I could imagine there being some racing side quests of sorts, etc. A game of this scope would rightfully take 5 solid years of development.

What I can't imagine for one moment is an entire Star Fox themed game built around racing. It makes no sense from a thematic point of view. It makes no sense from a 5 year dev cycle point of view. Some of the best racing games ever were made in 2-3 years, not 5.

Well they've been relegated to Donkey Kong duty for the past decade.

There is no chance they are making another Returns game. No need to even entertain that.

I'm going to go with Liam was joking, and this reddit person is trying to jump on a bad lead. I believe Liam when he says it was a joke.

That said, if by some chance is does turn out real, remember there are lots of people pouring their time and energy to this so doing nothing but shitting on it may be counterproductive. Whatever it winds up being, it's something we have to keep an open mind about anyway...

I know racing games don't take long to make, but it depends on what kind of racing it is. Are they racing all through space in and out of planets? I would expect Retro to atleast make the races big.

I'm imagining multiple vehicle transformations in each race: arwing to land master to blue marine to walker to gyromaster. Would be pretty dope actually lol

Liam supposedly said the game's idea is so out there, it probably required 100 persons to come up with it.

"X but racing" isn't much of an original idea ( Unkarted jokes, anyone?), so it's either not that or they came up with a really unconventional racing gameplay.

I hope Retro has got a Kirby game up their sleeves. I want to see all the boiled piss that would create and I like Kirby. Two birds with one stone and all that.

If he said the first part how is Star Fox racing so far out there that it would require 100 people to come up with? Star Fox racing sounds simple that a handful of people could think of it and ideas.

That's why the person you quoted said it's either not that, or the gameplay is insanely out there

What kind of gameplay for racing would require 100 people to come up with. We're talking about racing. There's only so little you can do with racing.

It's not like they said it's Star Fox RPG and it may have taken 100 people to come up with. With RPG you have can do way more that the statement would make sense.

That's such a half assed concept for a game.
Any concept depends on the execution.

Imagine a omnidirectional race at relativistic speeds, through treachourous asteroid fields and Dyson Swarms. Someone ambitous enough could come up with some crazy ass shit.

Actually you know what, this shit would be hamstrung by Star Fox, their starships fly like planes. Give me weird semi-hard science fiction thing with nozzles all over doing ridiculous manuevers.

Not if it's a flying racing game with Arwing type fighters.

But then this would be literally the only StarFox game with an Arwing that doesn't automatically accelerate? Why not just make linear shooter levels at that point? I'm trying to figure out what racing adds to a franchise like this.

Unless everybody's kind of right and it's a StarFox x F-Zero mashup.

I don't think anyone's doubting you could make a racing game with Star Fox ships in it.

The questions is more about why would they use the Star Fox IP to make a game like that when there are other racing franchises in Nintendo's catalog that would work much better. Diddy Kong Racing, F-Zero, etc. It would be super weird to just decide to turn Star Fox into a racing game for that reason alone.

The Reddit mods have a dubious track record when it comes to "verifying" insiders, IIRC. Back in the NX days, they "verified" someone who insisted that NX was a traditional home console more powerful than PS4 and that Eurogamer, WSJ, MCV, etc. had been "duped."

This is off topic and old news but I'm just catching up to this thread now...

And NSMBU port??

Sorry for the super late reaction haha. Have there been any updates on these?

If it is a Star Fox Racing game, then how could Retro have possibly anticipated that Zero would crash land in 2016 when they would've started production on this game around 2014?

It's like blaming Next Level Games and Retro Studios for not cleaning up Metroid after Sakamoto and Team Ninja fucked up.
