When we moved in to this house, there were great neighbors on both sides. Then one of our neighbors decided to move and rent out their house. The new people in it are a fucking nightmare. They don't cut their grass or take care of the house at all, it's starting to look like a jungle of weeds. And our backyard fence is starting to fall over and needs to be replaced.

So I went over and talked to someone at the house, I'm still not sure who they were, I've never seen them again. But she said that "frank would know the phone number of the owner, but he's not here." She said they would bring the number over whenever they get it.

So a week went by and nothing. I went over again and it was a different girl who did not speak English very well. I think she understood me and it sounded like she said "I'll get it soon". So another week went by and still nothing.

I went back for a 3rd time just now and another new person answered and said they don't have any info of the owners. Wtf is going here, how do you not know who you are renting a house from...

I would just start to have the fence replaced on my own and take all the good sides, but they have multiple dogs in their backyard 24/7 and they would rush over here when it started.

Really don't know what to do here, and never been in a situation like this before with this horrible of a neighbor. Anyone have suggestions on how to get a phone number for someone who owns a house?

Sorry to hear that duder. No advice to give, just some sympathy. Our neighbours came over to get some money for the 20 year old fence and asked for the info of our landlord, we gave it to them, two years later they gave up trying to talk to him and paid for the whole fence themselves. (and the guy claimed our rent needed to be raised more than the legal limit because of repairs like the fence costing him a lot of money. lol okay bro)

Leave a note explaining your situation. Hand it to one of those randos to give/read it to the owner and have him or her contact you with the number your left in the note.

I wouldn't expect them to walk over to you with the contact info at this point, so they might at least be willing to do it this way. Some people just don't like confrontation so give them options such as the note.

I know when people kncok on my door, I usually don't answer or I quickly assess what they want but then politely tell them to leave lol

Man, as someone who has dealt with horrible neighbours I can sympathize.

Bad neighbours can mess with your happiness in a serious way.

In my city there's a website that lets you look up properties and it shows the legal owner's name.

OP, have you tried using public records to find out the name of the owner? If they are paying taxes, there should be a record of it. If they are not, they can get foreclosed on.

I sympathize with your neighbors and you. If one of my neighbors knocked on my door asking for the owners info, I'd be like, "nah" and shut the door. You can search for home owners as long as they pay taxes(as pointed out earlier).

I am curious, did you knock on their door and say, "hey you aren't cutting the grass and we need a new fence. whats the owners info?" lol

All I did was say that I live next door and introduced myself. Then I said the fence is starting to fall over and I'd like to get it replaced and asked for the owners info.

This is why an hoa is good. They would make them cut the grass and he able to help with getting in contact with the owner.

If you go through https://www.propertyshark.com you can get all the property details including owner information.
Might even list their current address so you could at least mail them or visit if close by.

it will cost you extra to get a phone number though. I'm sure if you search the internet, you can find cheaper ways to get a phone number once you have a name.

Don't waste your time with the trash that is living there. Call the city. They will come out and cut the grass and charge like 500 bucks to the owners. Guarantee that gets someone's attention.

Call the city. Not sure where you live but a similar situation in DC would cause the owner to get fined $500.

What the fuck? Trash? Because they don't mow their lawn (which might not be their responsibility) and won't give dude the landlord's info? Nah.

100% trash. How can you even argue this. Take care of your fucking property. OP even mentions the neighbors have been nothing but a nightmare.

They don't own the property, it isn't their property.

It is on the owner to maintain a rental, often times that includes lawn maintenance as well as repairs.

The only thing trash in this thread are your posts.

Do you have a home owners' association? Normally I hate the shit out of them, but you can use their evil for good in cases like this.

Maybe the original renters are secretly selling the house as an airbnb.

That's what I'm thinking since he went back twice and each time it was a new person.

Try looking up the house on airbnb. First go on zillow and see how many bedrooms and bathrooms the house has and put those numbers into the airbnb search filter.

If you find it, knock on the door and talk to whoever is currently there and be a bit stern. Say that you know it's an unregistered airbnb rental and that you need to talk to the owner immediately about a fence to be repaired Tell them to message the guy right there or you'll call the city and their home insurance carrier (assuming renting out your house raises insurance cost if you actually tell the insurance company).

Don't fuck around dude.

He isn't spot on as he is calling the tenants trash people, due to a fault of the landlord.

If you are renting a house and the lawn is turning into a jungle (even if its the landlords responsibility, which is super rare in every rental home situation I've ever seen) any decent human being who cares about being a nice neighbor or member of their immediate community should take it upon themselves to make sure the current residents isn't a garbage heap. Grab a lawn mower an take care of it.

Now I dont agree with labeling anyone trash, thats a harsh belittling term for any human being, we all should be better than that and recognize some people are just not good neighbors and call them that accordingly.

Yeah, the neighbors should do the upkeep if the landlord isn't taking care of it, but I don't know their situation or what agreements they have with the landlord.

Maybe they don't have a mower, maybe the lawn care is included in their rent. Who knows, but I won't go out and label someone I don't know.

Oh...They are trash, don't kid yourself.

There is a reason actually homeowners dislike renters.

Okay and you are a trash person for having such shitty takes on people you know nothing about then.

Go through your town. Use every legal method you can.

Just finished dealing with trash renters next door. Just filthy folks. Other neighbor rents and is fantastic. So it's not just someone that rents.

Trash status is determined by behavior. Renter or not.

HOA threats would only matter to the HO (home owner), someone whose just renting and doesn't care would toss that crap in the garbage. Further, there are laws protecting tenants if their home's owner gets in any trouble. It's not cut and dry, and a great example of why you absolutely should vest anyone you plan on renting to, beyond a credit check.

Are you serious with this shit? You know literally nothing about these people. Nothing. And now you're going on a spiel about renters in general? The hell?

lol

I guess you are a renter or are still in your mom's basement.

Maybe one day when you actually own something, you may change your mind

Yikes.

I'm glad to be in a neighborhood where people don't rent since it would be cost prohibitive.

People in the homes around me seem to care about taking care of their investments.

My parents neighborhood has gone to shit ever since the houses went on the rental market.

You may not have a lot of options OP. Look up any city ordinances on weed height, tree clearance, or sidewalk overhang. If anything is in violation file a complaint with the city. Harassing them with tickets is likely the only way to show them this isn't welcome in your neighborhood.

Like other's have stated, look up your county assessor and look up the parcel information. I spend a lot of time at my job look up these details and it's really easy. You should also be able to contact the Assessor's office for additional information that is not publicly listed.

I'd give them fair warning before doing so, but yes, do this.

You'd almost forget you were on Era reading this thread... Calling people "trash" because they don't regularly mow their lawn, and now endorsing an idea to harass them with tickets if they have any sort of property violations?! Jeez people take this homeownership stuff waaaaaay too seriously. (And I say that as a homeowner myself, before anyone tries to tell me that I 'don't know what it's like' or something.)

That sucks op. My parents had something like a halfway house pop up behind them and they stole their chainlink fence. They put up a tall wooden privacy fence years ago but the chainlink fence was theirs too. The people (renters... or whatever they were) that lived in that house tore down the chain link fence. To top that off, if they wouldn't have stolen the chainlink fence their dogs (pits of course) wouldn't have been able to get into my parent's back yard and bite their dog. I think their was so much outcry in the neighbourhood that situation is no longer, but renters or people with no real stake in property value can be the absolute worst.

I own a home and there is a rental right next door, no problems with the last 4 sets of tenants.

I own my condo. Neighbor was a renter and was a terrible person that didn't raise their kids. Stunk up the fucking hallway. Loud. Obnoxious and low class behavior all around. Shitty people are shitty. But like I said another neighbor rents their unit and is good people. No problems.

It's not about renters. It's about people with no fucking training to be considerate to other people.

Violations get sent to the owner, and it's on the owner to enforce.

I did not expect "doesn't take care of their lawn" to be the primary reason of offense given the thread title.

They sound like horrible people to let the house go to hell like that.

I once had a friend who neighbors like that. When these neighbors decided to go on a trip, they asked friend to hose their dog off once a day, they left a big bag of food for it lol. Anyway my friend and his folks cut their grass, weeds, and painted the neighbors house while they were away. They did this because my friend's family were about to put their house on the market.

If you're in the US, call the city. They will get in contact with the home owner, and they'll come mow the fucking grass and bill him for it.

Huh I can see the fence being an issue and it needing to be fixed by hopefully going halfsies on it but as far as the lawn or house looks they shouldn't have to do anything just because you don't like the way it looks. I know most people won't agree with me but if the owner doesn't care and neither do his renters it's their business. Should have bought a house in an area with HOA if that really mattered.
