UPDATE: So now microsoft have announced official keyboard and mouse support for xbox, could we see a port of Quake champions come to xbox? With possible cross play support?

Its been nearly 5 years since the release of the current gen consoles and I still cant play a single Quake game on them.

What is going on?

I know Quake Champions is so far PC only but why? And yes I know the argument for KB/M control, but there is people happy to play with a controller too. I dont understand why they wouldnt bring the game to at least PS4.

Since Xbox got BC i thought great, surely we will get Quake Live made bc or at least Quake 4. Nothing.

I miss playing quake on console and i want to play Quake Champions (dont have a pc) or at the very least I'd be happy with a couple of the titles being made BC on xbox. Especially that Quake 2 60fps bonus that was on the quake 4 xbox disc. That would be amazing.

Surely I cant be the only one? Has the series really become that irrelevant?

EDIT: A lot of people are saying this thread is port begging and shouldnt be allowed. I guess it could be viewed in this manner and if a mod feels it is then lock the thread. However, i simply want to see what people have to say, theories on why quake hasnt come to current gen consoles in any manner. Like none. It was a huge franchise back in the day so just want to know. It is a gaming forum so we should allow discussion.

champions seems to be their current effort, I doubt they will announce anything quake in the flavor of doom 2016 or the recent wolf games. kind of a shame.

It was hard enough to get the PC players interested in QC and that is their main audience.
Porting it to console would've been a waste of time.

I adore the original Quake and find it more entertaining to pick up and play these days than Doom I & II to be honest. I'd actually love a console port.

It would take too much time to rebalance game for consoles so they decided not to do it. Maybe they will port it when things get more stable on PC, it's not like Quake Champions is doing amazing on PC currently.

I'd love a HD console port of Quake 1 and 2, but would also like a brand new single player Quake.

If they ever do make a new single player Quake, I'd want it to be in the horror gothic style of Quake 1. Much preferred that to the techno future style of the sequels.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a Quake Champions console port down the line thats slowed down a bit and has generous aim assist to make it playable on the sticks. However I think they made the right choice by focusing on PC first because of the series' legacy and making sure the gameplay caters to that. For a decade+ shooters have been built from the ground up with consoles in mind even if they come to PC and it's led to the dumbing down of shooters. Quake's hardcore audience of Quakedads would instantly shun any new attempt that was console focused, and rightly so. It's the correct course right now to do PC first then maybe console later.

The beauty of these games is in the mastery of them, can you imagine someone doing something like this on a gamepad

Quake Champions should be the multiplayer mode for Doom 5. Just include that instead of making a multiplayer for it.

Quake Champions is still in early access. I imagine a console port would be possible and profitable but given that Quake's fanbase is heavily skewed toward PC, it makes sense that's the population they want feedback from most.

Strong chance that Bethesda's going to announce a final release at E3 though, at least IMO, and I think a console port is more likely than not. You might not have to wait long.

Well, they are not thinking about a console version https://www.gamespot.com/articles/why-quake-champions-isnt-coming-to-ps4-and-xbox-on/1100-6442386/

Quake can work perfectly if it is in single player as proven by the earlier ports of the game.

MP can be somewhat wierd but Q3 worked fine on the Dreamcast so it can be done.

I dunno about sales, but Quake 2 for PS1, Quake 3 for Dreamcast, and Quake 4 for Xbox 360 were all competent well made ports that were perfectly playable. And the freakin dreamcast controller didn't even have 2 analog sticks lol
I'm not sure if I should trust other people's idea of "perfectly playable", because after all those games I've played on various platforms, I would still never voluntarily play an FPS on a console if PC is an option.

Yes, you COULD play Quake on a console and have moderate amounts of fun. If there's enough interest to justify a port, they can port it I guess.
But it'd be like trying to play a fast-paced RTS on a controller or a racing sim on a keyboard. Sure you can technically control the game that way but it will never feel like it should.

Quake has a history of being on console too. Its not exclusively for pc players. Its need to be inclusive of console players too.

I agree they need to get pc version right first. Then get it on console. I dont think quake can survive sorely on pc.

The PC Master Race is strong in this thread I see.. Bunch of elitism lol. Those saying Quake can't be played on a controller are underestimating what people can do.

And either way, what's it matter to PC elitists anyway?? If RTS games can exist on consoles, so can Quake.

EDIT: Getting warned over calling out elitists is a battle scar I'll endure.

I do kinda hate the assumption that the most efficient control system is the only way to enjoy a game. They're games, most people can still having fun jumping about with a controller provided everyone's on a level playing field, it's no big deal.

It isn't simply mouse and keyboard.

Quake champions pushes for 120 fps gameplay to simulate the lack of motion blur experienced on crt screens.

Pc gaming is more equipped to support that than console gaming by virtue of the number of tvs vs monitors that meet the performance requirements or vastly skewed towards monitors.

Quake 1 and 2 remasters/remakes would be great.

I know it is not a popular opinion, but i enjoyed Quake 1-3 more than the likes of DOOM. Great games. (Even if 3 is just good for online these days)

There is no technical reason it couldn't be on console. I'm sure the dev likes money, so releasing on console is always an option. The game just isn't popular enough. Maybe when (if) they finish this game and decide to make another entry, it might come out on consoles. For now, it's PC only.

Quake on a controller?

Good one
Didn't stop Doom 2016 from being released on consoles, or Unreal Tournament in the past, or Counter Strike (not an arena shooter but it's the quintessential PC shooter that according to many "just wouldn't work on controller"). Also every Quake game has been on console except for champions.

Just because you cannot play the game exactly as you do on PC does not mean it's not possible and not fun for people who play on consoles. They will have their own skill ceiling under which the game can be enjoyed and at times you can even have good pad players do stuff like this which is better than your average PC player on KB/m (the average player is not that good or fast even when on PC).

Quake 4 multiplayer on 360 wasn't even that bad, I wouldn't watch it in any competitive setting, but it was perfectly playable on console.

I think if MS gets KB/M support on the Xbox One, Quake champions should be the first game they go after.

Sounds fruitless, the mechanics would just end up making console players feel fustrated, trying quake with controller be like playing with my ass cheeks. Maybe if they ported it and enabled crossplay for a chance at decent population, with kbm allowed on whatever console of course, Xbox maybe with all the kbm goodwill they spoke of. Some of the console population might bother to learn kbm play.

Did they ever give the reaosn why Quake Champions won't be on consoles? The consoles could do 60 FPS in Doom and in other MP games. I don't see a hardware bottleneck for that. It would have been great since the game is F2P.

Quake is a fast paced FPS. Not exactly the kind of game for controllers. If it comes to consoles it should be M/K only.

"You know, Quake Champions, maybe anybody else would've been like, 'No, you have to do it, and it's got to work on every platform,'" Hines explained. "We were like, 'No, it's a PC-only thing. It's this kind of game. It's got to have this kind of performance, and it's going to be on PC full stop.' We feel very comfortable in making those calls.

"I guess theoretically there's a chance [it could come to consoles]. Who knows what future consoles look like? But this is full stop a PC product: 120Hz, unlocked frame rate. That's the experience we want folks to have."

Quake is one of my favourite games of all time. I'd love to own it on every console, honestly. Of course it's best with a mouse and keyboard. But I can still enjoy the Saturn and N64 ports (I was playing Quake Saturn just last week!).

I'd love a modern Quake in the style of the original goth Quake. I know a new Quake reboot would lean into the sci-fi stuff that the series gravitated towards but the aesthetic of the first game is just my style.

it's just made with the hardcore/esports crowd in mind. that means kb/m and 120 fps

not a matter of elitism or anti-console it just isn't optimal for that experience. if the game was a runaway smash hit sure they would work console into it one way or another but the game still has a ways to go even on PC and it hasn't even particularly won over the quake community yet. it just wouldn't make sense
