My guess is it probably got knocked a bit in the box while shipping. Due to the price of the guitar I'm guessing it didn't come with a hard case. It should be a very easy fix for the guitar shop to do, and since its a brand new guitar, I imagine its covered by some kind of warranty. Even if its not covered for some unknown reason, switches are very cheap to replace.
Yeah but I bought it online and it's fucking annoying if I have to send it back. Giant pain in the butt.

Maybe I could get them to re-emburse me some money and I'd just do it locally.... We'll see what they say

Where did you buy it from? If you can get a small refund that would be nice. Though depending on the store they may want you to send it back, I dunno.

If the rest of the guitar is fine, I would avoid the hassle of shipping it back. If you can get a partial refund to maybe get it fixed locally, that would be a good option. Unless you can solder, then just buy a switch and do it yourself. That's what I would do personally, but I would also wait to see what the shop says first.

This is just one of the issues with shipping guitars with out a hard case. Even when I bought my Gibson Explorer, it only came with a soft bag case. When it arrived at the store, as it was something not in stock and had to be ordered, I opened the box up in the store to make sure everything was good before I took it home.

I bought it from https://www.lamusic.com/

Funny, I always wanted to learn how to solder but I'm not gonna learn on my first guitar lol

i will jump in and ask another question on the practicing routine. WHAT specifically are you guys choosing to practice in the time you spend doing it? just pieces of a song you're into at the moment or scales and improvising scales to build solos, dexterity and such?

I taught myself how to play and I picked up some bad picking habits I'm close to completely correcting. Practicing slowly with a metronome and increasing speed. It's coming along great and I feel like I'm Goku, just about to burst into a super sayian for the first time.

Other than that I practice playing by looking at tabs as a general guide, they're almost always a bit wrong, and figuring it out by ear, using my newfound knowledge of music theory, scales and modes to help me along.

Before lessons I coild play a ton of riffs and metal songs, but learning how to actually play the guitar has been awsome. I play all the time now and get a little better every day.

Keep at it, as my teacher says, you're learning how to speak in a new, musical language

So I finally managed to open the panel on the back and took out the switch and it's most definitely broken. Basically looks like the little metal bar that is used as an axis of rotation for the three position stick snapped so the stick is moving freely in the cylinder.

Still no news from the store... I guess I won't get any until monday... This sucks...

A toggle switch is like $6-$7. Even the top of the line Switchcraft toggle is like $15. Solder the four wires to it and you're done.

Got an old guitar with piezo saddle pickups I'm trying to fix. This small green circuit board or whatever the heck you call it is borked...you can see a burn mark between the 2nd saddle sodder point and 3rd from left to right, so those 2 saddles aren't getting any power. I am thinking I am just screwed. I have been googling for a while trying to find out if I can reppace that board, but so far no luck. Figured I would post here dor advice.

What is odd is with what you see above, saddle 3 4 5 6 work with scratchy buzz. Just messing around, I took thin wire and soddered it from 2 to 3. When I did that, 2 3 4 5 6 don't work, but 1 works and WHISPER quiet in a good way...no noise. I don't even understand how that makes any sense.

I'm also trying to figure out if the shield wire going to the saddle wire is there to act as a return path for the signal, or if it is strictly shielding/screening.

I've been taking guitar lessons since February, and I have a few questions.

So far, I've learned all the open positions and how to use barre chords to move up and the fret, along with learning the the CAGED theory (although just on a beginner level). I can strum different songs with the open chords, and I'm trying my best to use barre chords to get better at those (they sound good, but I'm slow to switch between open and barre)

I've learned 2 of the minor pentaonic scales, and have been playing to backing tracks using the whole "circle of fifths" theory to play along.

I feel like my progressing pretty well, but one area that I want to improve is my strumming. I've learned the "Folk Strum" (d,d u, u d), and I usually use this to play songs. However, I find that many songs use their own distinct strumming pattern, and I seem unable to pick up on them when I try to strum along. It's as if I can't translate the the rhythm of the song/strumming pattern to my own strumming. My friends, many of who play music say I'm over-thinking it, but I can't help to feel that my strumming is very robotic, and my sense of rhythm isn't good. I'll strum to a metronome, which seems to help. I was just wondering if anyone has some pointers on learning to strum more in rhythm to particular songs? Or if you have any strumming exercises you recommend I'd greatly appreciate it!

So I'm still waiting to hear back from the store and because of this I'm trying to keep my guitar as "new" as possible including not removing the stickers...

Does leaving the stickers on the pickups affects the sound in any way?

Didmt know this thread existed. I started learning guitar 2 months ago, right now I'm practicing trying to switch between chords. I love it, I wish I tried doing this sooner.

Got up off the loveseat, walked over to pet my cats and my heavy electric that was resting on the left arm of the couch rolled over and smashed the top of my new acoustic, which was on the right arm. Time to find a nice decal to cover that one. Thanks, ghosts!

all my guitars have beauty marks, not a big deal

Still haven't got a reply from my mail to the store about my broken pickup selector switch....

They have a live chat on the site but it's almost never online. It was at some point today... I started talking to somebody but then the whole thing went offline while he was "looking into my order".

This is seriously starting to piss me off.

On one hand I don't want to have to send back the whole thing to them cause that's a giant pain in the ass but at the same time I don't want to pay for the repair.

Best case scenario would probably to get some money back so that I can get it fixed locally but for that I would have to be able to talk to them... And even then I doubt they would agree to that.

All that for like a 10-15$ piece... If I had the soldering tool and the skill to do it I would just take care of it myself and be done with it but that's not the case....

Ugh...

While I can understand why you wouldn't want to mess with it on a new guitar, I do think that is one of the easier soldering projects you could start with.

Yeah I bet and that would be a fun project... Tho since I don't have any of the gear it would probably cost as much as getting it done by someone else.

I mean.... I guess I could just buy a set of EMG solderless pickups, that would solve the issue...haha... 200$ solution to a 10$ problem....

You guys think this one would work with an LTD Eclipse guitar? Visually it looks fine on the site but it only mentions LPs

So I'm starting to learn some finger picking next.

My instructor says I've made good progress but that I should take a step back and start practicing some rhythm parts and finger picking so that I'm more rounded.

I agree with him, as I feel I'm having difficulty progressing further missing these things.

Anyone have any finger picking song recommendations? I find that with finer picking songs I like a bit of melancholy, but I'm not sure where to look as it's not usually the style I listen to.

Whats the deal with these infinite sustain guitars? yay or nay?

I've always wanted to play with one of these. First time I saw one was Phil Collen of Def Leppard. He was doing some cool stuff with it. Nothing fancy, but showed how easily it could be used to cool effect in a band environment. Shit is expensive, though, so I've always just stuck with my poor mans version with the ebow.

I think Fender recently built a special edition Strat with a sustainer built in. Looked cool, aside from the whole Strat thing ;)

Rare financing offer on used gear going on at Guitar Center. 36 months of equal payments, so as long as you don't straight up skip a payment, there is no fear of interest. I've complained on here before about how rare this is. They are constantly offering crazy financing for new stuff, but very rarely go over the standard 6 months on used. I believe the last time was two years ago when I got my PRS Singlecut.

Hey gang. Newbie here. Happy to have found this thread as I know learning guitar will be a tough journey. I took a sample class with a private instructor and liked it but dang private instruction is expensive. Just wanted to pop on in and say hi. I'm sure ill be participating more and more in this thread.

how much are the private lessons you've found? my teacher does lessons over skype and might be more affordable than what you've encountered. i know when you read skype it sets alarms off. Firstly, he's a friend of mine who used to live here in LA so I took lessons for two years from him in person at his home, he then upped and moved across country so we switched to skype. He's such a great teacher though, that being done over skype has no negative impact on how he teaches or how I am progressing. He's just that good of a teacher.

My acoustic guitar has started making strange noises :( There is some rattling from the headstock from what I can tell. Everything seems to be solid and not moving around (I checked tuning pegs, loose ends of the strings) though so I am not sure what is going on. I screwed in tuning pegs harder but it is still rattling. It's especially annoying since I can hear it when I play open top E string.

Any suggestions or should I simply take it to some guitar shop? I am sure that I did not hit it with anything though I had it in a car but it was in a soft case. Nothing looks broken though as I mentioned. It is as if the noise comes from inside the head.

At least with Electric Guitars, that usually means that you need to do a setup for it. If you're confidant you can do it yourself or if you're worrried take it to a guitar shop where they'll do it for a not so small fee.

I agree with Neo0mg. This time of year, at least in my part of the world, guitars often require adjustments due to the temperature and humidity changes that take place.

If you're comfortable adjusting the truss rod, check your relief. By your description it sounds like there might not be enough. If there's not enough, loosen the truss rod 1/8 - 1/4 turn. See if that makes a difference after a day or so. If not, take it to a luthier or your set up person.

So follow up on my story about my LTD EC256 I bought online and that came with a broken pu selector switch...

After a lot of back and forth with both the store (which is not in the same province) and the local distributor I finally gave up on the warranty repair and decided to get it fixed by the local luthier who was recommended to me by a friend. I would have had to pay for the shipping on the repair and not only that but I feel like shipping it back roundtrip kinda defeats the purpose of having it fixed considering it broke in the shipping originally...

It gonna cost me a bit more money which is a bummer but on the plus side I found a great luthier for future needs and he only stocks US parts which means that it will be an upgrade over the cheap chinese switch I had.... Not that the selector switch quality has a big impact on the sound but anyway lol.

Also, look at that dude's workshop....man.... So pretty!

https://www.migneaultguitars.com/

Only real bummer with all this is that he has a 3 weeks backlog wich is annoying considering that for a skilled tech it would take like 10min to fix it once he has the new switch but anyway. Also he can't get the switch in black so I will have a silver switch on my black LTD... Not a big deal, I think it will even give it a bit of a unique look lol.

At least he seems competent. I bought my epiphone explorer used from guitar center. They told me when I was buying it that they had replaced the selector switch, but the guy ended up just trading it in right after. Got it home and guitar center wired the switch in upside down. So up is the bridge pickup and down is the neck pickup. I mean how do you screw that up.

Looking at his prices, I can see why he has a waiting list. His $90 setup would cost ~$250 at the 12th Fret here in Toronto, and nearly as much most other reputable places. The included fret level is great value! Let us know how it goes :)

Just turn it around. It's not wired backwards but screwed in upside down.

Curious about hero's question too. Also, how much low E string buzz is acceptable on an electric if it doesnt end up in the speaker (I cant hear the buzz through the amp).

Thanks for your suggestions. Yeah, I will take it somewhere as I am not really comfortable with adjusting it myself yet. I also have a lesson today, so I'll ask my teacher about it and if he knows someone who can do it.

So I imagine most of you know or have heard of Phil McKnight on Youtube. He does a lot of gear review. Good channel overall.

He just posted a video today about a small pedal company that wasn't happy with the way their pedal was shipped back to them decided to go all in on social media against him. Calling him out, insulting him, etc.

What a fucking dumbass move by the pedal dude. Predictably the thing has backfired in MAJOR ways for them on Facebook and Instagram lol....

Like... It backfired so bad for the dude that I kinda feel bad for him now... He clearly didn't handle it properly but holy shit

How do you decide how high/low pickups should be?

That's really personal, depending on what style of pickups you have, and what type of sounds you're trying to achieve.

Fender and Gibson's guidelines are as good a place to use as a baseline for experimentation as any:

Yeah I like the Anderton stuff and Chapman sounds like a great dude to hang around with but when he kinda goes "corporate" for his guitars he gets so annoying... I can't blame him, it's his business after all but still.
