Well, congrats. If you managed to enjoy Max Heart, which is pretty much universally agreed to be the low point of the entire franchise, you're almost certain to enjoy pretty much everything else the world of Precure has to offer =)

Splash Star is fantastic and I hope you love it as much as I did.

A friend of mine has a similar taste to mine and he loves Max Heart too (and didn't even know the consensus was that it's the low point). Honestly, everything that I love about Futari wa was there and MORE. So, I can't complain, to be honest.

More kodomo anime reviews to come...

While the reveal regarding the different sites was great, I wish it didn't retread on the whole concept that the ones that grant these powers are the bad guys. Nijimin and Aya's brother though were the highlights, even if the implications are absolutely disgusting.

Lostorage conflated WIXOSS 6

It's actually really heartwarming watching the girls playing the game amongst themselves, on their own terms, without any hostility or hard feelings. It's so rare to be able to solve conflicts in this show without being driven into a corner and forced to risk everything.

That goes for Suzu and Chii-chan, but also for Ruuko, Tama and Hitoe. Circumstances were conspiring to put them at odds with each other, and the game was threatening to draw Ruuko and Tama back into its grasp against their will, but in the end they all managed to come to an understanding and join the game willingly and on their own terms.

If there's any theme to this latest incarnation of the show, it seems to be in the value of trusting in and relying on your friends instead of simply trying to protect them. Strength in numbers is the name of the game with these latest battle rules, and so rather than trying to keep each other out of harm's way for fear of losing, it's better for everyone to work together, pooling their strength to increase their chances of winning. Just like Kiyoi's decision in her battle against Carnival to bet everything rather than holding back - though the way that gambit played out isn't exactly the best of omens.

Kakegurui Drama 1-10 (OT here)
Finished this today, great adaptation. Enjoyed it a lot. Minami Hamabe did a great job at bringing Yumeko to life, though the same can be said for the entire cast. It wasn't as lewd in it's imagery as the manga and anime, but that is okay. It did well to translate the mistreatment and outright abuse the house pets endure as well as the potrayal of the student council antagonists.

I hope this also gets a second season to finish up the arc.

Definitely give it a shot if you liked the anime.

These were pretty good... mostly because of the supporting cast, who is actually fun. I'm not really feelings the main four, Sarah is deadpan, I'm not even sure what's pink hairs' deal and Riku's personality is basic as they come.

I know it's a children cartoon, but I watched Appmon and the main cast was actually pretty fun with a rich set of personalities (For a show made to sell you toys)

I think the opponent might have been more interesting without the relationship to the trainer being pushed to the forefront. Or at least find a better reason for their relationship going south than him accepting the report that he had died.

Catcher doesn't seem too fun. Daigo takes more Ls before things start to look up.

Finally getting a mention of Sakura joining the team.

I was kind of wondering what the show will pull off to make the 2nd cour interesting. So far, it seems like it offers an insight on some aspects that weren't as prominent before, along with the hurdles that come with an adaption. The new characters are pretty nice too, especially Andou, while it's nice to see Miyamori on a more demanding position. Dr. Diesel's addition to the team and her interactions with the director are really good too. The 14 hours long meeting over the voice actors was one of the highlight of 2nd cour, and maybe the entire show. While I'm sure there was a lot of exaggeration, the discussion devolved to crazy demands and some weird-ass topics.

Also, being Zuka-chan is suffering. : (

Momo just wants friends. She was going to drag them into soccer, but found out they were into Gunpla and went with that 'cause she just needs a group to hang with.

I actually didn't like that part. Those guys were annoying which was kinda the point but they showed us them wanting other voice actresses and arguing about for too long which got on my nerves.

And that's the long-term goal set up. Funny how lots of characters become a bit more likable when they're not all trying to murder each other. But Nijimi gets the most memorable scene easily.

Lostorage Conflated WIXOSS 6

Carnival too OP yet again. And apparently she's working with/for someone else? Well at least Suzu and Chinatsu are handling things better this time. But enough about those suckers. Time for Super Ruu to save the day.

Toji no Miko 18

I always knew Nene was a true bro. Weird how they didn't try to use her(?) to talk to Takiri earlier, but at least it happened. And well she got some nice development before she bit it at least. I think this is the first time Kanami lost so decisively. Meanwhile, apparently Yomi isn't weaksauce anymore at close range. Guess even she can get better.

Oh, I see there's a theme to the dark magical girl shows this week. Just like in Wixoss, it's really quite refreshing - almost inspiring, even - to see the girls banding together to proactively stand up to the real threat instead of being at each other's throats all the time.

Though of course, there are still some characters who aren't likely to stop being psycho any time soon. Nijimin and Aya's brother are such a good match for each other. The two unhinged sadists with a pretty face and a heart of toxic waste. I can ship that.

At any rate, capturing one of the admins is a pretty ambitious goal, and I'm kind of excited to see how it might go. After the revelations in this episode, the admins seem even more fucked-up and awful than I imagined, so any plan that involves getting one over on them sounds potentially very satisfying.

Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card-hen 14

Meilin Presents: Sakura Fluffy Hair Edition! And lo, they looked upon what she had created, and they saw that it was good.

This episode's card seemed like the surest proof yet that the cards' effects were coming from Sakura's subconscious…until the card's identity was revealed. The actual content of the illusions was unambiguously influenced by Sakura's mind, but that seems pretty par for the course for a card that's all about bringing imagination to life, so there's no telling if that influence was due to the nature of the new cards in general, or just because that's how this one in particular happens to work. Still, it does fit in with the pattern so far observed.

Syaoran, meanwhile, continues to be a proper little badass, pulling ever more impressive magical tricks out of his sleeve. Stopping time itself through his own magical ability alone is no mean feat - that was one of the most draining types of magic to use even when it was available as a Clow Card, let alone creating the same effect from scratch. You can tell he's really pushing his own limits lately - I just hope he doesn't push himself too far.

Hmm, if you hated FMA and didn't care for MHA and find One Piece too long then I'm kinda stumped. You've already seen HXH and YYH and those are usually at the top of my recommendations. If we're talking traditional battle shonen and you are not against reading manga if the anime adaptation is shit, I guess I'd recommend trying Black Clover since that moves at a quick pace.
But if you really just want anime and by Shonen you don't necessarily mean battle stuff like HxH and YYH, then Haikyuu is indeed a great recommendation and I love Assassination Classroom. I'd also add Kuroko's Basketball for sports and Blood Blockade Battlefront. Or Death Note if you haven't seen that already.

I am going to pull out a recommendation no one else likely will.
Mutsu Enmei Ryuu Gaiden: Shura no Toki
https://myanimelist.net/anime/340/Mutsu_Enmei_Ryuu_Gaiden__Shura_no_Toki

it doesn't have any super amazing fights, and the story isn't ground breaking in any way, but it's still a very solid show and a very enjoyable watch for me. The main thing is it has a really nice progression. The anime covers a lot of ground in 26 eps (As it says in the description it covers three generations). Plus it's a series that is often overlooked by the anime community so I like to bring it out when someone is looking for something not mainstream :P

also I am surprised no one is telling you to check out Jojo :P

Great minds etc. xp

Gonna second the Jojo recommendations from up there. It's one of those rare truly top-tier shonen shows that doesn't suffer from awkward adaptation pacing/quality or excessively daunting length. Plus it has the bonus of being divided into very distinct arcs which mean it never feels "never-ending" despite never actually, you know, ending.

As for One Piece, it's a biiiiiig undertaking, that's for sure. I do want to recommend it, because it's the most popular shonen series in the world for a reason and I love it to bits. But I'm not sure if I can really recommend it if you're hoping to solely experience it through the anime, because the anime's pacing gets progressively more glacial later in the series until it reaches the point where it's actively harming the content.

That said, the first few hundred episodes don't really have that problem, so there's no point really thinking about it too hard when you're initially getting into the series - the anime is arguably the best way of doing that! Just be aware that I'd heavily recommend switching over to the manga once you get really deep (which has the benefit of being quicker to catch up on, too =p)

Oh, and if you haven't checked it out yet, Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) is a super-popular shonen series which isn't too long and has a big following for a reason. I can absolutely recommend the anime adaptation of that - the first season's pretty strong, the second is absolutely on fire, and the third is airing next season! =D

Well, congrats. If you managed to enjoy Max Heart, which is pretty much universally agreed to be the low point of the entire franchise, you're almost certain to enjoy pretty much everything else the world of Precure has to offer =)

Thanks, guys! I'll check those out. I have seen Attack on Titan. I liked the first season and really turned on the series with the second season. I tried Jojo and was immediately turned off by the dog murder but I went back and watched the first arc, which was decent. Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card-hen 15

Wow, even more confirmation that the events of the second movie happened exactly as we remember them. I guess there's still the outside possibility that in this continuity the impromptu "earthquake" that interrupted the show and the accident where Yamazaki-kun got injured really were ordinary accidents rather than incidents caused by the Nothing card, but that feels like a bit of a stretch at this point.

With this much evidence assembled, maybe it's easier just to accept that the movie happened as-is and start to think up excuses for Eriol's house's continued existence instead. I suppose it's not out of the question that the Hope card could have reconstructed the house while it repaired the damage the Nothing had caused to the rest of the town…?

Oh, and thanks to all that reminiscing, we didn't manage to fit the actual card capture into this episode - is this the first time an episode has ended on a full-on cliffhanger? At least that Snooze card is useful where it counts - and that was a surprisingly slick trick of Sakura's casting it behind her back in full view of everyone, lol.

This was a blue balls episode for sure. Just when the fight was actually starting to ramp up and get good we have the forfeit, especially when the boxing was majority of the episode and it felt lackluster. Maybe it's just the result of being the first official fight in the show but I can't imagine the other fights will play out like this. Especially across Yuri and the other 2 guys show so far. Might be the one episode I wasn't too keen on, but it wasn't necessarily bad...

Music is on point though.

'Bout to watch Abenobashi for the fist time. FLCL is my favorite work of entertainment ever (on... some days), so Gainax's similarly zany multi-layered sister show is long overdue at this point. Any opinions here as to which you think is better, or simply how they compare (if they're worth comparing at all)? Though I hope to like both in a harmonious co-existence either way. Yes!! That's ryye!

Tbf, Nijimin has every motive for it be it with Shiori killing her friend or Aya/Yatsumura lying and manipulating her. And well, every Mahou Shoujo in this anime is fucked up because of their misfortune in different ways, it's literally why they're chosen after all. hahaha

Was a cute movie and pretty decent as a kids film. Wasn't my favorite Yuasa/Saru flick but I enjoyed it. The animation was a treat, as always.

The story was tropey at times and I can't say I was the biggest fan of the two main characters. They didn't so anything wrong per say but they were pretty typical. The story also seemed to jump around a lot, and sometimes it left me lost, not in a cool Yuasa mind blow way, but in a way if I was wondering what I missed.

Still, the story setup and side characters were all fun and the whole thing was a blast to watch. The timing and visual comedy were particularly genius.

They do not really have much in common in tone, style, or lineage. At best Abenobashi was marketed in the west as being from the same studio as FLCL to piggyback off its success. Abenobashi is just a lame gag parody that lacks the self-awareness you find in other similar works. There is tons of other stuff out there that does what it does better and nothing about it aged well. FLCL's closest relative is Diebuster. And maybe Dead Leaves after that.

Hey, all. I just finished Hunter x Hunter after watching Yu Yu Hakusho and I need something new to watch.

These are basically the only shonens I've ever enjoyed for what it's worth, and the best part was the friendly bonding and tight-knit cast. Is there anything I should watch if I liked these? Should I try One Piece? The never-ending aspect is a red flag but maybe it's worth a shot. YYH and HxH have gotten me a bit more comfortable with longer shows but they definitely moved at a glacial pace sometimes. I like the 70s and 80s anime aesthetics so recommendations from any era are fine.

Thanks a bunch!

Nitta's family seems great but holy shit the Anzu part of the ep was crushing. She's too good for this world.

Lupin III Part V 6

Of all the recent anime revivals, a new pink jacket episode is by far the least expected and most welcome.

Legend of Galactic Heroes: Die Nueu These 6

That was an interesting way to adapt this part, dramatic too. I knew what was happening so didn't pick up on the show was so very deliberate in not actually informing the viewer of Yang's plan. It made for a great final scene that rife with ambiguity.

Megalo Box 6

This makes me feel better about last week despite the poor fight choreography. Characters like Aragaki are dangerous to introduce unless their presence helps the principal cast grow in some manner. I think this was managed when taking both this and the prior episode together as Joe could see the results of Nanbu's training in Aragaki's success despite his injuries but, more importantly, Nanbu was forced to confront his own nature and how quickly he abandoned Aragaki. I think his faith in Joe was given a stronger basis past the deal with the loan shark and that'll reflect going forward. I was going to comment about how each of the last three fights has had the Joe, Nanbu, and Sachio arguing about doing things one way or the other before realizing it can't be done alone but right when they started up this ep, actions didn't reflect the intention of the said words. This is cool because it's maintaining how headstrong each of the characters is while also crafting this sense of unity.

Space Battleship Yamato 2202 1

Well, I was entirely wrong to be concerned about this project after Izubuchi's departure. Holy shit.

Well the rest isn't anything special but the races are actually very good. Also even after learning what happens in real life and after all the death flags the moment Suzuka was injured was hard to watch, I like how the show first showed that she was ok and then showed Special week saving her. Usually shows try to cash-in on the drama.

This same observation has most likely already been made but it's kind of amazing just how much more enjoyable SAO can be once you take Reki Kawahara and his writing out of the equation, remove all traces of Kirito and his gaggle of haremettes and replace them with actually fun and likeable characters who take themselves kinda sorta seriously but not deathly so and who are in it mostly just to have some fun.

Also, P-chan is best girl confirmed.

The opening is surprisingly lackluster, so that's disappointing. Good episode though, of course Joe lost against Yuri but he showed some of his potential off and got Yuri to use his other hand. Now that they're official, wonder how much Joe will struggle along the way to face Yuri again. Also, the beats for this has been pretty dope so far.

Fate/Stay Night Heaven's Feel Movie 1

Finally got to watch this - the film didn't come out in theater where I'm from so I had to wait for the physical release. I've been following this franchise since the days of DEEN's first FSN adaption, so you could say I've been looking forward to this quite a bit. But all in all, I'm not sure if I really like it.

Sure, there's a lot to like here - in the visual department, ufotable animation is top-notch as usual: all the fancy camera movements during the fights (the Lancer vs. Assassin being the obvious highlight) are nothing sort of delicious eye candy, and they incorporate the 2D characters pretty seamlessly into the 3D environment that even someone who hates seeing CGI in anime like me has not much to complain about. The character designs fortunately have avoided the cutesy detail-lacking rhino-face approach that plagued the UBW series and are more in line with the designs from those OPs ufotable did for the PS Vita version of the FSN/FHA game (I guess Sudou is to thank for this), and the 2D background art is simply breathtaking. The sound design really makes me wish I had been able to see this in a good theater, and the Kajiura soundtrack, while not as memorable as the one in Fate/Zero, has some nice callbacks that, along with some story beats, make it look like they're trying to sell this as the sequel to FZ.

The thing I'm not so sure about is the approach this adaption takes regarding the story. The first 30 minutes or so is great - the anime-original scenes give some needed context to the relationship between Shirou and the Matous, and I would even say build the eerie, suspenseful atmosphere quite well at the end, just before shit goes down. But once that credit montage rolls the cohesion starts to fail - characters appear and freaking die without any introduction, lots of rushed or missing exposition, and the whole thing feels like one big Heaven's Feel greatest hits montage. Now I already know the Fate lore like the back of my hand so I had no problem understanding any of this, and I get that the filmmakers have to condense some established stuff in order to fit the runtime (it would probably be groan-inducing for the fans to see Lancer vs. Archer and Saber summoning for like the 4th time), but I still wonder if the film would have flowed better had we got a more complete introduction.

Other than that it's a good introductory film (for the route, not the franchise) that sets up some mysteries and relationships to be explored in the sequels. True Assassin is a delight, and there's even a slight horror vibe with the Shadow which I enjoyed. I think a few scenes that fleshes out important characters got skipped over, but the trailer for the second film does show some of them so maybe the filmmakers are just withholding their cards for a more opportune moment.

kViN just posted some production notes about the film too, which is a nice read for anyone interested in the behind-the-scene stuff:

I generally enjoy parody and thought Abenobashi was good (when I watched a long time ago, I have no idea if it has aged well).
It has a couple of jokes that are stretched too much but it also has very memorable moments.

I don't know. Pacing-wise MHA is not really exceptional and most Shonens I've seen also adapt around 2 chapters per episode (the only exceptions I can think of are One Piece and the first cour of Black Clover). It's just that it has that pacing and also doesn't have filler due to the seasonal nature.

Ochako dragging that kid through the dirt while running was kind of funny. Use any other method to move him!

It's more of a comment on the arc being relatively quick in the source material than the pacing of the adaption I think.

I would agree with your friend.

Nemesis...take it back bro

I don't know. Pacing-wise MHA is not really exceptional and most Shonens I've seen also adapt around 2 chapters per episode (the only exceptions I can think of are One Piece and the first cour of Black Clover). It's just that it has that pacing and also doesn't have filler due to the seasonal nature.

It's more of a source material thing. MHA moves extremely quick in the manga, so even with adapting 2-3 chapters per episode, it still feels pretty fast in the anime.
