well, that is a fair sample of what you should stop the dev right at the beginning, i can see the nostalgia of the tecnique behind KI and DKC, but this looks weird AF

I think I'm gonna get this for my Switch. I have an old friend staying at my house for a weekend soon, and playing through this in couch co-op seems like it'd be a great time. Just two friends dealing out some good ol' fashioned street justice to hordes of pre-rendered CGI sprite thugs.

While the game itself might have its flaws from a design/presentation standpoint, it still brings a smile to my face to see this art style and 90's cheese brought into the modern era on the Switch in particular.

PS - I think that the level-specific challenges and the good cop/bad cop mechanics are smart additions to what is otherwise a simple game adhering to the straightforward standards of its side-scrolling brawler forebears.

This looks ugly af and cheap as hell. I don't think that animation style really works with their art direction

I like how this looks. Kinda like the Williams arcade early digitized graphics games, like Narc, but mixed with pre-rendered 90s graphics.

I think I would actually prefer it if the resolution were much lower.

Yes and no, beat'em ups were simple and repetitive(but that was also why they were good, not everything has to be complex) but also very short:

Final fight < 60 minutes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKeHSiBzE4A

streets of rage 2 < 75 minutes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KG7MvthfOxY

double dragon < 30 minutes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jo6R6LqpNNY

and so on, those games durations aren't allowed for today's games, times are changed so beat'em ups should change too while remaining faithful to their essence.
Guys times are changed, this is no more the time of arcades and scores, most of the people don't care about scores, most of the games don't even have scores! Most of the people barely finish a game one time and if they replay it most of the time is because there's some new game content or unlock, there's a huge difference between the short duration of an arcade game and the one of a rogue-like for example, in both cases you finish a single play fast, but in rogue-likes and similar to unlock everything you need to play many times, the time you need to get everything is the real duration of rogue-likes and similar.
I talk as a beat'em up lover, beat'em ups were my favorite games back in the 80s and 90s and i really want them to return, but realistically they can't just remain the same as in the 80s/90s unless they want to remain in a very small niche.

Please never post about beat em ups again

What is with this genre on this site? People are always like "im the worlds biggest beat em up fan - tmnt, sor2, final fight, double dragon." The genre is way bigger than those games and did actually evolve quite a bit up until they morphed in 3d action games

There are standards past how much nostalgia a particular game invokes.

Cant tell if the poor framerate is intentional because it looks hilarious or actually poor performance.

With this one and The Takeover I am glad to see the Beat'em up genre is still alive and kicking, might pick this one in the future.

Hopefully one friend of mine who just finished studying videogame design will help me design one one day lol

I'd pay $10 or $20 for a good beat-'em-up that lasts less than an hour, as long as there's couch multiplayer and replayability (multiple difficulty levels, stuff like that).
I didn't say anything about scores. Don't direct your reply at me if you're really responding to what someone else said.

I'm talking about alternate routes, unlockables, secrets, multiple difficulties, extra modes, multiple endings. Different ways to replay the game. Practically everything you just said about roguelikes applies to Fight'N Rage for example.
I was talking about games that you complete in an hour and you have nothing else to do like 90s arcade games, imo there isn't a big public for games like that today, a game that has unlockables doesn't last 1 hour no matter what, a play can be short but to complete the game you need many hours, that's one good way to do a modern beat'em up that could get a bigger audience, Lost Castle and Rampage Knights for example are like that by mixing beat'em up and rogue-like but they aren't really good in the beat'em up department.

Please never post about beat em ups again

What are you talking about?!?!?

I have played all the beat'em ups i encountered in the arcade era and now i buy the modern ones(but ending disappointed most of the time), some examples of modern ones i have played are: Scott Pilgrim, Castle Crashers, Double Dragon Neon, Dragon's Crown, Code of Princess, Phantom Breaker, Lost Castle, Not Dying Today, Rampage Knights and others, so i can safely say i know a wide range of kinds of beat'em ups, this without counting the ones without z-axis movement that i don't consider to be in the same category.

Evolution has rules and limits, you can evolve what you want but the core of a genre should remain the same otherwise it becomes something different, suggesting to a beat'em up fan to play "character action" games for example it's like suggesting to a Metal Slug fan to play Doom, you said: "did actually evolve quite a bit up until they morphed in 3d action games", 2d action games exist too and they are different from beat'em ups, an action game is one thing, a beat'em up is another, a beat'em up fan wants a beat'em up, not an action game.

3d beat'em ups exists but usually i have never liked them, recently i liked the Warriors minigame Army of the Night, Akiba's Trip and the demo of Uppers.
We could say that Arkham City games are in part beat'em ups and i have enjoyed them a lot, but the combat wasn't my favorite part(but it wasn't that bad though)

That trailer gave me Judge Dredd/Batman Forever/NARC/Guardians of the Hood vibes.

Added to my steam wishlist.

Y'know, as someone born in the 90s, maybe we should just all agree to skip 90s nostalgia products if this is what we can expect?

There are a few reviews posted on YouTube. Even after watching them I'm still on the fence, however. I'm leaning toward getting it on my Switch solely to play through with a friend's who's visiting next week.

I've probably played every beat em up on MAME, SNES, Genesis etc as it's my favorite retro genre. I'll always love a beat em up game, even the shitty ones. That being said, this looks kinda interesting. I see what they're going for here and can respect that, but I prefer my beat em up's to be 2D. Weighty punches, great art, interesting backgrounds, good enemy variety, and funny looking bosses separate the good from the bad. Bonus points for a good soundtrack, branching paths and move variety.

I'm playing on the Switch and six levels in and I have to say that they captured the feel of a 90s game that would've come out during the early/mid N64's lifespan pretty well. Other than that it's a pretty typical brawler where you punch/stab/throw garbage cans at the standard enemy types (Punk Guy, Prostitute Girl, Fat Guy) and occasionally fight a boss - there's no branching paths or anything. I'd say that for u$13 it's worth it if you like the genre and want more of it, just don't expect anything special.

Hitting things in this looks wildly unsatisfying and the hitstun seems really small. I can't tell if the people playing are bad or if the game is just really jank

The game takes a little time to learn and adjust to. I played it as I would Final Fight and ran into issues with combat, but once I adjusted and played in a manner that better suits this game, I found myself stringing my combo multiplier in the x75 range. For best results, the player needs to use grab and the rush to knockdown opponents.

I saw Nate Drake gameplay on Yt, it... doesn't look, move and sound great.

I hoped after the slugish Streets of Red, it would be cool but... nah :(.

I like the look of it. Thank God it's not yet another pixel art game. The art style is fine and the low frame-rate totally reminds me of playing final fight on my Amiga. If i could handle Wing Commander on the 500, I can handle anything.
