retrode-2-cart-reader.jpg

https://www.dragonbox.de/en/183-cart-reader

I have no clue how long they will last and currently none of the plugins are available. They ship to the US (literally just finished putting in my order). For those unaware the Retrode is a USB cart reader that lets you rip your game carts (legally) straight to your PC for emulators or run the roms straight from the cart in an emulator. I've even seen unconfirmed reports that it works with the raspberry pi. The base unit supports Genesis and SNES.

N64, all Gameboys, and other Sega consoles can be ripped with the attachments.

Also, I searched for this so if there is a thread on it it doesn't come up with a search for Retrode on our forum

The plugin availability has been irregular in the past, but they DO happen.

For anyone on the fence, or looking to back up their old games (save files and all), I recommend this piece of hardware.

I've emailed their customer service about the different add ons availability (The main reason I want it is actually n64 games at there are subjectively better methods of ripping most of the others) we will see if I get a response.

It's really tempting for Gameboy games. I'd love to be able to backup my saves, replace the battery, and put the saves back on them. Not sure if it's worth it for that one use though.

If you don't need N64 support I recommend getting a Retrofreax from Japan

It will allow you to dump the following systems :

- FC
- SFC
- MD
- NES
- GB
- GBC
- GBA
- PCE

Out of the box. You can get a Mark3/GG addon for those two (they even come packed in with some units).

It's an interesting alternative for legal emulation (the unit will also play the games btw)

I do want one but they are way more expensive it's a good suggestion though if you can afford it!

Can it dump all special chip games for the SFC? The retrode can't do a few, like MMX2, and any SA-1 game.

User Warned: Derailing a thread about emulation with accusations of piracy.
Strange that you need to post this. From reading certain threads you'd think that everyone on here already had one of these. Hmmm...

Does the RetroFreak only dump to the SD card? I have a Retrode and I like that I can hook it up to a PC or Raspberry Pi and just see that it mounts as a normal drive. But it's obvious drawback is that it only works with SNES/Genesis plus whatever adapters that you might buy if they're in stock.

I haven't updated mine yet, but I believe they updated the N64 plugin to properly support everything now.

The fact you can even update it is news to me xD. Is it something that you need newer hardware for? If it's software/driver based any idea where I can download it?

This is the old link I have saved for the next time I bother to get my hardware out:
http://forum.retrode.org/index.php/topic,382.0.html

Woah thanks they even have updated code to support more SNES carts on that same forum I'm going to need to bookmark this.
-- SNES Enhancements!
-- Added support for SNES Enhanced Chip carts:
CX4, SDD1, ExHiROM, SPC7110, SA-1, BS Satellaview,
Sufami Turbo, and Nintendo Power carts.
