I wouldn't be surprised they added SNES games between when the online launches and the end of the year.

I'm glad it's cheap, but at the same time, I can see how some people look at it as not particularly good: pay $20 to be able to back up your saves and also get a few ROMs every month (they have online now!). I was hoping for something more akin to having access to the Virtual Console. I know the PS4 doesn't allow you to play PS2 Classics from the PS3, but Nintendo is banking a little on nostalgia, and they do that by... promising 20 NES games? Man...

I'm not giving these fools money for games that came out 30 years ago. I don't even like the NES.

I'm not paying for the service because what the hell is the point of playing Nintendo games online?

All my niggas will come over and we'll just play Smash and Mario Kart, and then call it a day.

Its a shame but they've basically got me for 20$ save game insurance.

I've done the VC/PS Classics anticipation/disappointment song and dance too many times over to care about the games.

I prefer paying 20$ for playing online than paying 60$. I don't use voice chat or any other feature that's supposedly missing from this service, so I'm just happy with the price. SNES games being available Netflix-style is a nice bonus though, and one I would use.

Honestly a much better value service than psn plus

  • 1/3 the price
  • An ever expanding library of reworked retro games instead of limited time availability of old native games
As far as i understand it also has discounts for members and cloud saves.

Other than a voice chat solution made for human beings, what does psn plus offer that this doesn't?

Games.

Games that are less than 30 years old, games that people actually care about (Rocket League etc)

The best of both worlds would be a basic sub and a premium sub. Tiered subs with different features like on Netflix would make a lot of sense. Different people will want different things. I can see where you're coming from, but in a year or so you might be played out with Splatoon as well. If there'd be more than one game on Switch that has compelling online, I might also think about subbing but at this point it's basically Rocket League and Splatoon. And I have RL on PC where I can play it whenever without subs.

Good point. Personally, I would not be against tiered subscriptions per se, but it's a no win situation. If they do that, I can honestly also see meltdowns happening on Era "That should be in the 20 dollar sub".

But I see where you are coming from, but if multiplayer was free, I think I would sub just for the Netflix style subscription anyway personally.

As for Rocket League, I think you will be able to play without a sub. The wording mentioned only Nintendo First Party games, but not third party games. Makes me think they have a choice to use their own servers or Nintendo's?

SNES games would be way more attractive. Aside from Mario and Zelda, all the other titles are generic crap videogame.

I feel ya OP! I was not expecting Nintendo's online service to be even remotely close to Xbox Live or PS Plus, so I'm actually pleasantly surprised by what they're offering. $20 a year for cloud saves and at least 20 classic games with added multiplayer sounds like a great deal to me. It could be even better based on the discounts they'll supposedly offer.

I'd be much more inclined to pay if some classic games from platforms other than NES were included. At this point I haven't even played a Switch game online so I really won't be missing much.

Sounds straight garbo and only reason its charging less is because it has alot less to offer and because like every other company they are testing the waters of pricing. Nintendo online features and its voice chat implementation is archaic at best.

I don't think paying a fee to play online is ever a good value (MMOs not withstanding, it's justified there sometimes, though often enough the pricing is absurd there too) but at least I think Nintendo's by virtue of the pricing alone is the least offensive of the 3 as long as you actually want to play games online. What other bonuses they try to tack on to justify the fee doesn't make it any better to me, whether games or features or whatever it's not "free" as people like saying, you're paying for it in micro payments as long as you want to keep using the online multiplayer. Valve worked and provided all these Steam features when being much smaller than any of the big three and that is what enabled them to become the de facto publisher on PC and increase their business 10000000000fold, throwing the odd free game my way isn't gonna change that they should be doing the same as Valve to make the services another reason to buy and support their other products rather than another way to nickle and dime the consumer. Why do I have to pay to access online features rather than simply support the given company by buying their online games products that are so cool I really want to play them, which they sell to me by providing said service? MEH!

I honestly can't believe what I'm reading. Hurrah for paying for barebones online experiences for about 3 games, that have online setups reminiscent of what other people were doing 15 years ago. As for the games...how many NES games honestly hold up? SMB, The Lost Levels, SMB 3 and Punch Out maybe? That's all I can think of. PSN just had Bloodborne, and Switch's best online experience (Rocket League) was on PSN on day of release.

Switch only haz liek 3 gaemz and they suq and it's gonna be like that foreva, Switch has no gaemz, get a ps4 dawgz.

I would actually prefer if it was just £20 a year without the NES games.

I think they are so old and so crappy they are likely to put more people off than they interest. I can't imagine a kid getting a Switch for the first time will be impressed when booting up NES Soccer.

1 year of Switch online will cost £17.99. You want it to cost more and have even fewer features than it already does?

as a retro gamer. the few nes announced don't do much. and we'll have see how much and fast nintendo will add stuff. i guess the fear for a drip feed of games is my view of it for now
while the price is nice and low. as someone who likes me some Splatoon 2 and ARMS. it does not matter too much to me because i would pay double for a service that just gives me the abilty to sent messages and invites to friends + chat on the actual console instead of the terrible app etc. pretty basic things really

i guess a lot depends on what you want from it...

I mean, the price is nice, but only if their online is stable enough for that price to be justifiable (I haven't played Switch online). I kinda don't care about the NES games. It's neat if you're really into it I suppose, but Nintendo has a huge catalog and I'll echo others in saying I would rather see SNES, N64, Gamecube, than NES games at this point. It's really not comparable to PS+ or Xbox Live Gold.

This is all besides the major issues with locking the only save backup option behind a cloud service paywall and the absolutely insane way they're trying to do voice chat on an online console in 2018.

You could probably own and play all of those games and more for less than $5, for life. How is paying a monthly fee in perpetuity (at least until you lose access when Nintendo shuts down the service) a better deal?

It's only a "good deal" for someone with low income when you ONLY compare it to the ripoff that was virtual console. As if there are no other alternatives.

This new system just seems like a way for Nintendo to weasel out of giving people ownership over these ancient games, so that they don't have to let that ownership carry over onto future consoles.

Nes roms are literally worthless to me. If I gave a crap about NES/SNES/N64 games I would have hacked my vita or psp and put way more than 20 games on them ages ago. Also with their voice chat "solution" the Switch might as well not have any online enabled games.

Paying $20 for just cloud saves (which are free to a point everywhere else) is a fucking ripoff.

or mayyyybe he just likes what nintendo does with the online service?

Your point of view is weird. every positive thread about a game would be "free PR" with your stance.
why even have threads or even a forum then if everything positive is apparently free advertising for an evil corporation?

There are positive threads and then there are strange exercises in mental gymnastics filled with bolded text and underlined takeaways. The very topic title itself is a PR convincer line.

We'll judge where the 'Netflix model' bargain status is when it comes close to offering a full service of games and not a less than offering than what the Wii VC launched with. It's been a year already and the most they can get going on their own hardware is 20 NES games, while just as easy emulation would mix in GB, GBC, SNES, and GBA. Don't wanna rush that subscription model too fast though and offer an actual library, right?

When people talk about "free games", I often think about how the emulated NES, SNES, GB, and N64 roms I bought on Wii or 3DS should be free to download and play on new hardware since they can track what my account has owned over the years. Thats an inconvenient topic though for the 'bargain' rhetoric.

It offers much, much better "free" game selection if you look over the years across multiple platforms. It also offers substantial discounts during sales. This is beside a normal voice/chat app, sharing games between multiple PS4s, and so on.

Who the hell cares about the NES games at this point and didn't bother to utilize numerous options existing before for playing them?
a "free" game selection that's not retroactive, the biggest reason I will never resubscribe. As the poster said, discounts are coming, so that nullifies your response...

Nice try, but I've got about 30 Switch games. I didn't post that because I'm a console warrior, I posted it because I'm not willing to slurp on whatever lukewarm diarrhoea Nintendo decides to feed me.

Oh, the "I got black friends argument." So because you have Switch games you are allowed to spout nonsense and hyperbole?

People it's $20!! In no way Nintendo was planning to match XBL and PS+ for $20! You guys are something else, reminds of the Switch announcement thread and now look where we are, and I was one of those people being down on the system haha...

Admit it, when the big games hit, the price will be even a bigger steal! Still wished it was free though but at least it's <$20 personally for me...

The black friends argument? You're equating this to racism? Are you kidding me?

And the big games aren't hitting. In the same way that the web browser and Netflix didn't hit. Nintendo won't do anything unless you make them - by not paying for their shit.

Personally the service holds zero value for me, I have no desire to play old NES games and I refuse to pay for basic backup functionality.

I have no confidence in Nintendo's ability to create and maintain online services, especially given how poor their efforts on the Switch have been so far.

I would play other past games that I missed from Nintendo's catalog but to be honest, NES games are a bit too old to have a space in between the big releases on other consoles.
I would totally consider other big games from more modern consoles that I skipped in the past. It's my take at least.
If I ever sub to Nin Online, I will probably never play any NES game... MAYBE Zelda, but nothing else so for me the entire money would be just for playing online.

Yes, that argument is equivalent! Just because you have something doesn't excuse nonsense comments.

I don't even know what you are trying to say "And the big games aren't hitting". If you want to play Splatoon, Mario Kart, Smash or Pokemon etc, you will be paying for online unfortunately...

I definitely appreciate the current phrasing suggesting that this service is really only about Nintendo's online offerings. They don't mention 3rd party online games and make a point of saying that some Switch games will remain free to play online. With that in mind, it's really just a fee for Nintendo to maintain their online presence as opposed to say what Sony does charging me to access online for games they literally contribute nothing to.

Of course, this could change

Also, the NES games look to be entirely Nintendo published titles. How many NES games did they even release? They might have to move onto SNES titles sooner than you'd expect.

You are not alone. I don't want to pay constantly to be able to play my games and / or have games removed just because of the game is thrown out of the rotation. Nothing is certain. What is there today can be gone tomorrow. No, thanks. A subscription model is not what I prefer.

I agree, for $20 I think the program is good. I'm really excited for the Netflix style of old games that I would of never bought outright. I'm also interested to see how online is going to work for them. I don't play online all that much as well, so if this was anything more than $20 I wouldn't touch it. I already hate paying for psn when I can get it around $40 since I only play Rocket League on it.
