Well, we're fucked.

Waiting for this tech to be co-opted for evil. Sampling your voice. layering it over the assistant's, logging into banking and investing accounts. We're fucked.

Wait is that using a synthesis of the user's voice or is it the generic "assistant" voice?

Pretty fascinating, especially since I hate dealing with calls for appointments, but I'll wait and see how much you can really trust it to handle any kind of scenario.

That said, I can't remember the last time I actually had to call for an appointment, especially for a restaurant. I can usually do it online or through OpenTable.

Inching ever so much closer to a world where all I have to interact with is my cats and Netflix. Now all I need is for Google Assistant to learn how to mod Resetera. Save me Google.

This is going to be abused by sales teams and telemarketers everywhere. It's a game changer though

They already have stuff like this. We had a landline activated for 4 months at the top of the year (I work from home and we needed it for Q1) and less than 2 weeks in, started getting telemarketing calls from a voice that sounds like someone's grandmother. The recording asks to speak with a name, waits for a response, then goes into this 'sweet little ol' lady' mode where she apologizes for getting the name wrong and tries to sell you some shit.

100% mechanical, no one on the line at all. Impressive but annoying asf.

I was really impressed by this. It's one of the most impressive, useful tech demonstrations I've seen. Wonder if it'll work that way in reality... I know my hair salon the lady who takes the calls is weird as hell, so we'll see how it handles that.

Generic assistants voice, not synthesizing your voice. THey're introducing new more lifelike assistant voices. That's why it says "Calling for a CLient," not trying to be the person.

If only my deliveries would come to my door instead of the club house I'd be set. My miracle noodles been held for ransom for over a week*.

*By held for ransom I mean I have to go to the club house at my place to pick it up.

This is where the world is going. People who are scared or refuse to allow companies like Google to have access to their metadata are going to get left behind.

I love the future.

Part of me is surprised we got self driving cars before this tech, but I'm glad we're at this point.

You mean they will have to reserve their own tables when they go out for dinner? I am sure they will be horribly traumatized.

You're thinking too small. This right here is a single small step into a much bigger world where AI can be utilized to simplify and automate countless tasks we do right now. In 10-15 years this will be a standard, maybe even less and it will be ubiquitous.

I just read the article about this on CNET and the video there and holy shit. We're like 5 years away from so full on AI assistants. (may be hyperbole)

From a legal standpoint, does the AI have to make the other party aware that theyre talking to an AI? The transcript gets recorded and pulled into the cloud to get analyzed even if its instantaneous

Once again, Silicon Valley is engineering services to do what their mothers used to do for them.

And you are thinking to big. Centralized metadata is not a requirement for AI to work. The examples illustrated here can all be done with local data, all it needs is your name and your input command. You fridge AI does not need to know anything, it can do localized machine learning and provide the exact same services. Your elevator AI doesn't need your metadata, it just needs to know what floor you work or live on one time to take you there every time.

There is no reason for anyone to personally interact with Google Services to utilize AI services in the future. And people that actively choose to not use AI for tasks they can do themselves will -at worst- have a bit less free time than people that do.

Grandma will be fine, is all I am saying.

Holy shit!

I was expecting it to be really robitic, but Assistant sounded almost Human! Can't wait for this update. Hopefully it's ready for when I upgrade my Pixel on January.

This current iteration only needs local data - or data provided in the scope, you're correct, but to think that this stops there is a little naive. The logical conclusion is to harness the data Google has on you to make decisions on the fly. It needs to literally become your assistant that knows everything about you and can make choices based on what it knows. That's where it goes and the only way to get there is to provide your information to Google, or whoever else gets to that point.

I'm hoping this doesn't turn out like some sort of gimmick. I can't help but think of the Xbox Kinect when that was first revealed.

I think this is going to be a lot like concept cars - a really cool idea in theory, but very different when it actually gets released. I'm guessing the main use for this will be to fill out missing information about businesses on Google Maps (like hours) by calling the businesses directly, but I'd love being able to delegate mundane things like appointments to an AI (since I definitely can't afford a personal assistant!).

I can easily see automated prescription refilling and more. Automated barber shop appts at preset intervals that make the calls themselves and pop up on your calendar etc.

I was hoping it was something being implemented soon rather a concept. Still amazing how far AI has come in the last few years. Give it five years and we may get AI that can pass the Turing test.

So on the other end of things this might be the beginning of the end for call centers in India. This is a cool example and all but I think the real purpose of this tech might be customer support.

It's pretty cool but I dunno how often I'd actually use it. For important stuff like banking or gas/electricity/insurance/mobile phone billings/enquiries I'll want to do it myself just so I know it's done properly, and in case the operator needs to explain something to me. And for stuff like hair appointments/restaurant bookings/gym classes I'd do myself cos I actually know them and like chatting to them. Maybe it'd be useful for a phone interview for a job though or something aha.

Sounds good to me. Sneaking out of the office to try to make appointments at places that only operate from 9-5 is already enough of a hassle.

I'll always opt to make appointments online but if I can just shove this task onto an AI when there isn't an online appointment option all the better. Let Google sit on hold for half an hour.

I mean this will turn into robot answering machines real fast, then it's all robots talking to robots and might as well speak binary again...

Maybe I don't get it

Who's calling to make appointments? Surely all this stuff is done through apps now.

I wish. Off the top of my head, maintenance work in our loft, visits to family physician every 6 months, dentist, barber and the carpet cleaner people we use all still want phone calls for appts, and don't have apps.

And app for the doctors office would be amazing though.
