What happened to Univision, all i use to see were articles about how they were taking over for the 99 and the 2000?

I hope the The Root guys are able to land on their feet, as messy as they are, I am sure someone will pick them up

Sucks. Gizmodo and Kotaku are my daily reads. Used to also include Gawker, but, you know ...

I admit to leaving Kotaku/Splinter/The Root for Resetera. Is this due to the great migration to Resetera?

Would really hate to lose those sites, especially Kotaku (not to mention Kotaku Splitscreen with Kirk and Jason which is one of my favorite podcasts).

I like a lot of the Gizmodo (nee Gawker) media group properties, but man, there is something in the kool-aid over there where everyone who works for Gawker really has a rose-tinted view of their own organization and it's history:

There is nothing like Gizmodo Media Group on the internet. While that's mainly a function of what we do—publish true and interesting things that others can't or won't—it's also a function of what we don't do. GMG doesn't find itself forced to deny that it is acting to defraud advertisers. GMG's bread and butter has never been quirky listicles, nonsensical quizzes, and cynical plays at gaming social algorithms. GMG never embraced a distribution strategy that left it at the mercy of merciless platforms like Facebook. GMG isn't reliant on sponsored content disguised as news. GMG doesn't use unpaid and underpaid labor to prop up our entire business model.

The implication in the quote above is that GMG is somehow "purer" then other outlets. However, GMG has done listicles, even if they are more "ironic" then that of Buzzfeed's, and I definitely have seen nonsensical quizzes run on Kotaku as frequently as the past year. They run ad's regarding Amazon sales in the same post formats of their news stories. Additionally, Gawker had plenty of clickbait gossip rag stuff of their own when they were finding there footing.

GMG can and should be reporting on their own bosses for accountability's sake and to protect their own jobs, but as a long time consumer of their content, the constant need to position themselves as this once-in-a-generation band of moral truth-tellers is tiresome.

I hate what's happened to my once-favorite site (av club), but I still hope that it isn't potentially on the chopping board.

Well I'm a dummy and didn't actually read the links, so here's my shame. But that quoted post really shouldn't have switched suddenly to Deadspin talking about other sites shady practices because it looks like they're saying "GMG isn't terrible like Buzzfeed or like Deadspin"

Used to visit Deadspin all the time, but barely do at all anymore. I may be getting too old for the writing style.

Somebody needs to buy Kotaku, it doesn't deserve to go down with the flaming pile of shit that is Gizmodo.

I hit all those sites daily to see what's there, I assumed they had plenty of clicks. Maybe their recent 'please stop blocking ads' pop up is a sign of issues (I don't block ads)

I have no idea what's going to happen, but FWIW Kirk and I produce our show entirely on our own, and we both love doing it!

Awesome, well whatever happens keep up the good work! Really enjoy listening to you guys every week, not just the gaming talk but chill side chat, current events, and Kirk's music interests. One of my best friends recommended Splitscreen to me about a year ago when I was looking to broaden my podcast selection and I've been hooked ever since.

They need a low-cost optional subscription to supplement the pitiful ad revenue. I'd pay $20 a year for Kotaku and I wouldn't even expect any perks.

I'm a big fan of gizmodo and jalopnik in particular. I don't visit Kotaku as much as I used to, but I'd still hate to see these sites go.

I have a love/hate relationship with a lot of outlets. Nowadays I tend to follow specific authors, I like having an understanding of who the author is and where they come from if they showcase any form of opinion. It seems the thing nowadays is to push out a lot of clickbait to reach certain demographics, and now that Facebook and co are digital advertising giants, that tends to be difficult to accomplish. I can't really blame the outlets for doing that considering the state of journalism. I see that jschreier was mentioned and also posted in the thread. I quite like his work.

Content walls don't work very well. When I was working for one of the GMG sites a few years ago they were putting a lot of hope into TV revenue with the launch of their Fusion.network and a lot of shows drawing on stuff like The Onion.

Who needs the Kotaku website when you can just read Jason's mini-massively ambiguous, clickbaity headlines and then get the real story on page two of the forum thread? :D

They bearly do articles anymore. Once they got the union the quantity went down fast. Lots of articles attacking non-union sports sites.

Drew Magrey is the only thing left reading. He is a modern Dave Barray.

Yeah, I frequent A/V Club far less these days
A/V Club has been going down in quality for a while, before it merged with the Gizmodo sites. Incidentally it was also purchased by Univision prior to Gizmodo being purchased by Univision. I hope that doesn't mean that the Gizmodo sites will soon see a similar drop in quality as A/V Club has.

I like them but their web design is terrible.

Edit:

Leveraged buyouts such as the ones by which these companies acquired control of Univision were common in the years leading up to the financial crisis: Investors borrow a huge amount of money to purchase a company and then make that company responsible for paying back the debt. The amount of borrowing required is often large relative to a company's earnings. This relationship—known as leverage—is used to gauge whether a company is likely to be able to pay back its lenders.

It's the Toys R Us/Iheartradio/Bain capital/ect story.

Bumping for this news report. Sounds like Univision want out

Today, the company confirmed with TechCrunch that it has "initiated a formal process to explore the sale" of both the Gizmodo Media Group and The Onion.

The company isn't offering much information beyond what's currently available in the press release, but the proposed sale includes a bevy of strong media brands, including Gizmodo, Jezebel, Deadspin, Lifehacker, Splinter, The Root, Kotaku, Jalopnik, The Onion, Clickhole, The A.V. Club and The Takeout.

Dark days ahead again for the remains of Gawker.
