I have two weddings to attend this year and I need a new suit for them. Both weddings are semi-formal and I'd like something versatile enough to be worn for a job interview down the line. Anything nice enough in the $200-$500 range? I was recommended Suit Supply, but took one look at their least expensive options and I hesitated.

I went and ordered a suit from Express because I also have a bunch of weddings. Unfortunately, I wear a 34 shirt which is impossible to find. Their 36 shirt looked like a dress on me. Being short sucks. If you wear anything larger than me, you can walk out of Express with a suit for sub $400.

Try Topman. Their target audience is pretty much high schoolers and early 20's so a lot of their stuff is sized very small. I wear a 36 but can't fit into any of their stuff in that size. Not the best quality but they got the look part down however.

What I don't like about chukka-style boots is the laces are difficult to tie tightly

On an unrelated note, I usually tie my laces behind the tongue, sneakers or not.

edit: That's it, never ordering caps again online unless it's from ssense since they do free shipping free returns + refund. It's always the same problem: the cap looks great online, I get it, put it on my big head, and the top part folds in an ugly way. This one folded in the center inward. Too bad cause it was right in the style I wanted. Gonna have to find caps instore otherwise from now on.

I'm honestly thinking about going on eBay to buy Banana Republic kentfield pants. Why they got rid of them I have no idea. The most amazing Cotten linen pants I've worn....

Unless any of you guys know of a store that has different brands like the kentfield pants?

Thanks

Might be frowned upon but I got a pair of Advanced Stretch Super Skinny Chinos from Hollister for like $13 with discounts and they are ridiculously comfortable. I might try to get a pair of extreme flex jeans or chinos from AE next.

What are all your thoughts on watches?

Never wore a watch, started up my new job which made you track how many steps you got per day as it impacted how much your health insurance costs. So I've been wearing a fit bit for 2 years now and in the habit of something on my wrist.

Starting a new job on Monday where this isn't the case and looking to upgrade.

I have worn watches all my life. My father was a watch nerd and I started off with swatches as a kid in the 80s. Had Seikos all through the 90s and most of the 00s, with my dad's Omegas sprinkled in. Bought my own Omega in 2008 and have been wearing it, various Seikos and Orients, and Steinharts ever since. I feel weird if i dont have something on my wrist.

take mine off sometimes when I'm coding as it gets in the way, too worried if I invested in something nice that I'd forget it or it would get knicked. Used to hate watches and thought I have a phone so I don't need one. Was dead wrong, nice and useful piece of kit to always have like sunglasses

Anyone got any recommendations for dressier shoes in big sizes? I was trying to find some stuff from Red Wing but I'm a US size 17 sneaker and I'm not finding anything above a 14 listed. Being tall is a pain (I can't blame the fat for difficult clothes shopping that's on me but lord this height).

Allen Edmonds runs up to size 16 with a large selection of widths. Can't really go wrong with a pair of Fifth Avenues for $250 or MacAllisters for $275 (they're $425 normally).

Go get your feet properly measured on a Brannock device or in an AE store, if you can. I recommend obtaining the version with a Dainite sole if you're a heftier guy.

So i tried out my new shades on Friday. And my eyes got fatigued really quickly. And it didn't seem to block out as much light as i thought. Is that normal for polarised lens ?

I'm a big fan of Topman. It's perfect for me as someone who's 5'6" and has a 32" waist. Stuff fits extremely well, when most other places I'd need the clothes tailored to fit my size. I hate that I no longer live near one. I might order some stuff online now that I have some new cash flow coming in finally. Time to update my wardrobe.

Finally got rid of the undercut slickback last month. Just got a fresh haircut today. Will have to take a photo later.

What's it called when a men's jacket is fit to match the way the waist goes in and the hips go out?

It seems like everything I find these days just drops from the insides of the armpits straight down

It's a taper or a drop from the shoulders. Most department store stuff tends to be cut for portly men with a large waist circumference.

Traditionally, suiting should emphasize that masculine V shape, so if you're suit shopping, try to go for those jackets with that kind of drop. Tailors can take in the waist to improve the fit too, but sometimes there's only so much they can do.

Yeah that's what's driving me nuts, I look good when its cut in to my waist, and it looks baggy and poorly fit when it drops straight down, I need to figure out how to describe what I'm looking for so I can search/ask for it more. So a "taper"?

Store associates might be familiar with the term "drop", too. To be specific and clear, I suggest getting a tape measure and finding out your chest and waist(at navel) measurements. For instance, my chest circumference at armpit level is 36", and my waist at navel is 29" and I prefer a close, trim fit, so I'd need a jacket cut to accomodate that. Relaying this kind of info to whoever's working with you can be very helpful for them to better locate something suited to your needs.

It's called waist suppression and you're welcome. In Italian tailoring the waist is suppressed quite a bit. But a lot of modern minimalist jackets are cut straight too as well. That's hard to pull off unless you are very tall and slender.

A good tailor will know how much to take off without making it look weird on you. Just ask them that you want to suppress the waist a bit. Oh and make sure you get a center cut suit jacket, tailoring it is much cheaper.

For those who like John Elliott, I was eyeing this now that it's on sale, but since I already got a gray one I'm skipping on it, especially since I'm eyeing a green one on ebay. Size small.
Canadian store, you can change the currency in the top right corner. You're not supposed to be charged duties, so if they do tell them and they should refund them, since it's made in USA and NAFTA and such.
The material on this one is really nice, it's not a printed pattern, if I knew I could have gotten this one I would have over the gray one I bought even if I like it.

Note: to me the hoodie when on fits a bit funny, since its sort of enclosed, not wide open. But overall I love the cut, works well for layering. Don't bother if you don't know what you're getting into, sale is final. Still has good resale value though usually.

I assume the sizing is as described for this one https://www.johnelliott.co/products/kake-mock-pullover-sage

What style / good place to buy skinny jeans/pants that are tight around the ankles? I noticed a lot of my pants are loose and go over my kicks and I have a few high tops where I want them to be tight or end around the ankles.

Yeah, those actually seem like they would be pretty good. I guess it's just a matter of going out and actually trying different pairs on. Any other store recommendations besides Abercrombie?
Well i dont know about b&M stores, maybe Gap, zara, and topman. I do all my shopping online now.

For skinny fitting pants i have these also and they are amazing. Kind of expensive, and its a dust magnet but the quality is great.

NY
I like my black skinnies from Oak NYC (and a lot of their stuff in general). Not restrictively tight on the waist and hips, but almost painted on the calves and ankle.

Depends entirely on your price range. For the cheaper range, Hollister always tends to run a $25 for most jeans sale once a month or so. They also offer a $10 off your purchase for signing up for their rewards program to make them effectively $15. For something a small step up, Gap jeans are currently ~$38 on their website with the current 40%+10% off promo. Uniqlo is also great for $30-$50. Abercrombie is also a slight step up above Hollister, but it's absolutely not worth the retail price. Don't pay full price for any mall brands since there's always some kind of promotion once every month or two.

For something higher end than the mall brands, take a peek at Unbranded, Naked & Famous, and United Stock Dry Goods.

As far as ending right at ankles, that's on you to measure your own body and find your inseam. With jeans, you can always simply cuff them up. Don't hesitate to buy pairs with a longer inseam though, as you can always bring them to a local tailor to shorten them up, which costs just a few bucks.

Excellent, thanks man. Good deal compared to the other sites charging $125.

are you into this because it's a james bond polo? pique polos are crap in my opinion. if you want something that fits great and is of a nice knit quality, go with Suit Supply's knitted polos. they're like Mad Men classy in the linen and cotton/linen blends. fuck pique. they're also around $65-$75 in cost.

I bought it, tried it on, and said meh. Returned it back. I'll try your suggestion.

I just bought a slim fit long sleeve button shirt from J Crew and as usual, the puffiness in the back when tucked in. And I don't want to get it tailored. Why do I see so many guys with tucked shirts and no puffiness? Looks perfect on them. These are causal shirts too.

i think you'll be quite happy with a Suit Supply polo. I was never a polo person, now I am addicted to theirs. As for the tucked in shirt thing, it's probably a combo of them getting slim fit or having a tailor slim it down. what size do you typically wear in jcrew? i buy XS, I am 5'9 135lbs and I generally have little to no puffy ness with their button ups.

They either get it tailored or just buy brands that fit them. Most likely they bought some shirts with some back darts sewn in or had a tailor do it. You may also be buying the wrong size as well. Size down if you can.

If you have any kind of a substantial drop in chest to waist measurement and want a clean tuck on an off-the-rack shirt, tailoring is more or less a requirement. For buying, you'll want to opt for things that marked "extra slim" or "super slim", basically tiers of fit that are even more tapered than the standard "slim". I have an 7.5" drop from chest to waist at navel, and I've found that Spier & Mackay extra slim shirts fit very well. Those have a 5" drop from chest to waist measurement, which should accommodate guys with a 6" or more drop best (of the two shirts I've ordered from them, I can say that their measurements are spot-on and consistent so far). Charles Tyrwhitt also recently started offering a super slim fit with a 4.5-5" drop (protip: if you Google "men's shirts", there's a pretty high chance that you'll get an ad link for CT offering $29.95/shirt pricing instead of their usual $69/individual shirt purchase).

Alternatively, measure yourself and order a made-to-measure/order shirt from Luxire/Ratio/Spier & Mackay/Proper Cloth. Pretty much all of them will retain a blueprint of your measurements, so once you find a particular maker you like, you can stick with them and have speedily-made shirts customized and sent to you.

Well I'll just get them darted.

I'm 6'1" 190 lbs. I have wide shoulders and narrow hips. Big chest, wide back, and big arms. I bought a slim fit large.

Spending $10-$15 each to get them tailored won't kill me I guess.

Thanks for the tips and taking the time to write al of that.

I've been looking into a new tech backpack that is not super bulky and preferably is water repellent. I was thinking of buying a Herschel Pop Quiz. Any other suggestions?
If you're willing to spend some more money I can wholeheartedly recommend anything from Aer.

I've got a Fit Pack and a tech messenger and they're great! The quality and materials are fantastic and they're the most practical bags I've ever owned.
