Well the thing with me and Retro is they've always been there for me.

Metroid hasn't. 3D Zelda hasn't. FE hasn't. But Retro has. For three straight consoles they put out solid software that appealed to me, first with Prime and then with DKC. Metroid was dead for me from Prime 3 through to Samus Returns. BotW only showed up on Wii U when its successor was already out. The 3DS FEs have brought me much pain with their drastically lowered narrative, world, and character values.

The other thing, though, is right now, Nintendo is very much doing well by me. 3D Zelda is already here. Xenoblade 2 clicked with me where 1 and X didn't quite. FE Switch is supposed to come this year. MP4 is announced. (We'll see if the latter two cause me anguish or not).

And then I've just got the suspicion that Retro might not be up to something that is "for me." The main thing people bandy about is "going more western," in a variety of ways. Most of those ways are not up my alley. Again, I'd love a niche western product from them, namely a blend of immersive sim with Zelda/Metroid adventure gameplay but I don't think that is what anyone means when they suspect Retro to target the west more squarely.

And then it just has been so long...

Maybe I'm wrong but idt I'll be too upset if/when I don't want Retro's next game. My expectations are sort of that I won't and Nintendo is otherwise good with me atm.

How would people feel if Nintendo was making an Amiibo Land game? I'm sure all you amiibo collectors would be happy.

that ship has sailed now
Lol not at all, just wait until they release Smash Bros Player 2 Amiibo for all characters or Pokemon Amiibo.

They will probably keep pushing the Zelda/Mario/Fire Emblem lines too.

Hell, even Animal Crossing Amiibo will probably be way more popular with a proper Animal Crossing game.

I think they are just taking a small break, but Amiibo will make a comeback imo.

Yeah, agreed, although I would say that Star Fox's entries into the adventure genre have been lukewarm to say the least. A full blown adventure, or even adventure shooter for a franchise best known for space combat would raise a few eyebrows.

For my money, Star Fox is the best fit, despite the terri-fake IGN random forumite rumour. Nintendo is very, very aware of its franchise power and using that to help combat the hardware power differential. Star Fox once commanded a lot of currency but that's diminished with a handful of poorly received games. Giving it to the golden child of Retro to reinvent makes sense, and expanding it into something which isn't just a shooter (and hopefully broadening its appeal, plus making use of Retro's skillset) would be viable.

As a franchise, Star Fox is very open to genre switching as well, although hard-core fans would baulk given most of the non shooter Star Fox games haven't been great.

Whatever it is, process of elimination can help reduce the types of genre is could be, though. In short, if it steps on the toes of anything releasing near the same 12 months from a 1st party studio, then it's unlikely, even from a marketing point of view. So not likely to be a 2D platformer, turn based strategy, beat em up, and with Pokemon and Metroid announced it won't be enchroching on their genres either...

I mean, Star Fox Adventures was a mediocre game before it became a Star Fox game. It was just a skin on a so so game.

Star Fox is an entry that is ripe for various genres if done right. They're not just skilled pilots but skilled fighters as well and a sci do setting is very open plus all the characters have unique personalities.

But you have to go all in. If it's space combat, Star Fox works best as a 3D schump with free range levels thrown in for some variety and dogfighting. For that formula I would only change in our modern age is the addition of online multiplayer, both PVE or PVP.

And if Star Fox goes action, they need to do the same thing. Just go all in and make it right, whether over the shoulder or first person.

Considering how many Wii U games have been getting ported to Switch, I'm sure Nintendo is going to try to salvage Star Fox Zero. There's a good game in there if you take away the Gamepad focus.

Zero 2 would be cool. Just really hone the level design, have more levels, and a better branching map and I'd be quite happy.

Didn't someone (reputable) report that they were planning to launch a mobile Zelda this year? Or this FY at least?

Anyway I'd love any console Zelda but I'm not getting my hopes up. A Majora's Mask style BotW sequel would be incredible.

I've been expecting something Zelda soon-ish.
The Link's Awakening Remake if that's real or Skyward Sword remake early next year.
Mobile Zelda was also rumored as well

I just remembered that there was this WSJ report about a Zelda mobile game coming after Animal Crossing.

Seeing as they want to release 2-3 mobile games a year, it's possible that either Zelda or Mario Kart Tour make it to smartphones in 2018.

Their mobile strategy in general has me very curious. I feel like making a thread...

Speaking of the mobile thing, is Dragalia Lost one of those fabled RPG IPs people were wondering about for mobile? I think it would be, no?

It was two RPG IPs right?

Wasn't Retro also handling the Tropical Freeze port? So that would be... four games simultaneously...

That pill seems a bit too massive to swallow.

Yeah, it's been weird. Zelda feels like the next step. Not sure a gotcha game would work since there aren't enough characters, but it's likely a brand people want on mobile with the popularity of clones.
Whatever it is it is going to be great.

I'm playing Tropical Freeze right now and between what they have been able accomplish in Metroid Prime and Donkey Kong, these guys deserve all the hype and ceaseless speculation.
Eh, I'm not sure.
They've changed a bunch over the years and I'm not sure if it's been a change for the better.
Even TF required a lot of help from a studio that's no longer working with Nintendo.

Yup - I hope that if this is the franchise they're taking, that's exactly what they do and not half arse it (and Retro aren't ones to half arse anything, thankfully).

I'm one of the people that think Star Fox Zero is good, but I also don't think there's a market for it on Switch even without the motion controls.
Maybe a sequel that finally passes after the Star Fox 64 story would be good but I think online gameplay might be the way to go.

It came up in Media Create at some point...speculation was always around Zelda and Xenoblade Gacha.

Trying to remember why it came up. Might have been a WSJ rumor like the GungHo thing where the Cygames partnership was rumored (but the speculation was the new partner was GungHo)?

Nirolak might remember what the source of the discussion was...

I'm googling though so maybe I'll find it.

Hope it is F-Zero. (Imo) Should it have part racing, and part action/beat em up style gameplay, that would be awesome.

Also, first post. :)

F-Zero deserves to be opened up. Don't be surprised if a new F-Zero game is coming.

I could see Nintendo saying let's try something different with Captain Falcon. He's become a popular character due to Smash and he shouldn't only be in a racing game.

Also welcome :)

Like some have said John Harker said Star Fox is coming. So it's just what is coming for Star Fox. Either Zero is coming or a brand new game and by who...hmm

Ah here.

Seems it was more than 2 possibly. But the rumor was Zelda and "other RPG IP"

Interesting, thanks.

I guess no one was expecting them to do a completely new IP on smartphones. So far their mobile games have been simplified (read: watered down) versions of their mainline series. I wonder if Dragalia Lost is successful, if they'd consider turning it into a full-fledged console game.

I know it's probably not a Dark Souls clone like the promotional art seems to suggest but I really want to see a Nintendo take on Souls.
or maybe they just want to do medieval stylings

or maybe Dark Souls really did resonate with Monolith Soft, Square Enix, and Atlus at the same time (which I doubt because Atlus)

Well, if what I've heard is true...and that's a very big IF...

Your "happiness" would ultimately depend on two things.

1. Whether you're a fan of this particular Nintendo IP.
2. Whether you're a fan of this genre.

That's why I said I don't know how the internet will react. You can be a huge fan of the IP, but you may dislike the genre. Or it could be the opposite: you can be a BIG fan of this game's genre, but you were never a fan of the IP.

Again, that's assuming there's even a smidgen of truth to what I've heard.

I don't plan to elaborate much more on this, but I hope I answered your question.

Damn! So i'm thinking either Star Fox or Diddy Kong Racing 2...

Yea

Game +port is doable

Game in deep development + game in planning stages + port is also possible but would be stretching them thin

3 games plus a port is a bit crazy for their size

I wonder if Star Fox as an Endless Runner could be a thing?

Also there was speculation (not based on any sources) a while ago that Star Fox might be the next Nintendo franchise to get a Warriors spin off.

Re Starfox x Mass Effect
I think my main issues with it would be these. Firstly the way Star Fox presents itself with human×animal designs is a little to cute and Mass Effect games at their core are Murder Simulators. So a Mass Effect x Starfox game would literally be a cute ish puppy/wolf murder simulator.

Secondly while it may be possible to overcome it with good writing/cinematography/production values. Nintendo only ever really does the bare minimum in those area's and in 2017 they didn't have a great showing.

Thank god Star Fox Warriors was rejected. The series deserves something better than that. It needs a game to make the series great again.

Retro is working on an old Nintendo franchise but with a completely different genre according to Emily.

So far theories have included:

F-Zero open world action adventure game with lots of punching (maybe like Batman: Arkham Knight but less serious)
StarFox RPG
StarFox squad based on foot shooter
Advance Wars FPS
DK open world action adventure game with lots of punching

Why not Star Fox Motorcross?

The WSJ said Nintendo was working on multiple mobile RPGs, and that one of the was Zelda.

Since Pokemon is separate from Nintendo, and Fire Emblem already had a game, the assumption was that the other one had to be either Xenoblade or Golden Sun.

I don't many people were expecting a new IP created by CyGames instead.

Edit:

Oh, I see you've all covered this already.
