This show is very ugly. It has gotten to the point where I found it extremely distracting and it is difficult to find positive aspects to the show's presentation when everything is muddy, rough, and lacks expressiveness. Even from a storytelling perspective the approach here is just misguided. The circumstances around this particular match do make it more interesting than what we've been getting in the last episode or two, but we are getting a clearer and deeper view of the background for a non-essential side character when the main cast still just has a bunch of question marks surrounding how they wound up where they are. There is no context yet for why Nanbu was driven to the slums and the story kind of just skates around that while doing a deep dive into someone from his past. Joe himself is also just proving to be paper thin. Limited on screen presence. No real style in fights. Almost a stand in during most conversations.

And it is hard to be excited for next week when the story writes itself into a corner like this. The no gear stuff isn't being handled well at all, particularly when Joe just always seems like a schlub in the ring. Also we are like five episode in....please...have some dignity and think of a way to create tension without someone dropping early and hitting a nine count to get back up.

Hmm... that is a very interesting opinion to say the least.

FMP IV 4

Oh my God, what an episode. A lot of things going on and it seems like the series' most critical point thus far. The tension was off the charts.

Like how early? As soon as you wake up or generally after you ate breakfast?

Watching from 3-6am. Right after I had finished preparing a project and presentation to the time I have to get ready for class.

I'm caught up on all the anime I follow for the week at least. Just haven't posted Steins;Gate impressions.

I wasn't particularly impressed with the storyboarding done by Kyoda this week unlike Izubuchi's work in the previous episode. The editing and flow (for the most part) was handled better than I expected but the camera angles and perspectives, while good, weren't as creative. The one thing I was impressed by was the voice acting. Tomokazu Seki really nailed that pivotal scene and Satsuki Yukino also did a good job at that particular point, although I was thinking she was a bit flat in the scene right before then.

The roughest part of the production was the animation which definitely felt inconsistent at points although there were a number of highlights. The main star of the show from an animation standpoint has been the special effects which seem to have been almost all done by Takashi Hashimoto. There was a Tuatha scene at the end which had a bunch of water animation going on in the forefront around the Tuatha. The character animation was a bit iffy at points but there were a couple of highlights such as Wraith's action scene and Tessa's launch. IV has definitely been a downgrade in terms of visuals compared to TSR but Xebec has done a fairly decent job of trying to maintain that standard at points. The biggest difference is the consistency, in that KyoAni is great at maintaining a general standard throughout their episodes. Here, I definitely noticed a few small parts that could have used a little more polishing.
dmsJxOYl.png

Stemming from that, the CG depiction of the mechs was also a little inconsistent in quality. Everything was pretty great, especially most of the Arbalest scenes. The Arbalest kicking the Codarl away from it looked great and the action scenes there worked really well. However I noticed the weight depiction was off in a few sequences like at the end with Kurtz's mech jumping in that there should have been more buildup in the launch and in the air they didn't do a great job so it came across more as floating.

Full Metal Panic Invisible Victory 4
What a tense episode, feeling activily distressed about possible casualties as Kaname is. And Al is gone now, Sousuke was really gonna take that last stand. Him trying to be genuine to Kyoko when he just shot some people dead in front of her was still kinda in line with his character while more disturbing with the stakes so high.

Megalo Box 5
This was the build up episode for his next opponent as most great sports anime do and boy it was rough watching the attempted suicide scene. Aragaki has a lot to deal with and i have no doubt he'll have to eventually change his focus to the gratitude for his current gym mates. The outcome being somewhat predictable isn't much of an issue since some sort of surprise factor i'd get out of a murder mystery, it's the character drama coupled with the presentation that got me going. When it comes to boxing i'd say nothing approaches Ippo but it's not trying to be, we'll see about the future matches with even higher stakes.

Violet Evergarden 06

Ancient astronomical library needs copy writers, this time it's not letters, every one of the library staff get paired with an Automemory doll, while one recites old scriptures the other types. This was actually a pretty decent episode, even if it had an underwhelming substory, it had an interesting setup which it didn't entirely mess up. More importantly, it benefits because it doesn't directly confront the emotional aspects of the story! as there's no letter to write, Violet doesn't directly talk about her/someone else's feelings but only speaks about her potential actions for the sake of someone.

lol that fight reminded me a bit of the Luca Blight fight. Wear him down with your allies and have a one on one duel at the end.

How is Hinamatsuri so goddamn good? It truly nails it on every level.

It's all I want to watch right now. I wish it was like some long-running shonen where I could binge 100+ episodes and never reach the end.

Anyone know if it's a single or double cour? Probably single, but just checking.

Wow.
Since the Jack the Ripper stuff this show has really gone off the rails in the best ways possible.

thus; Sakurada Reset 16-19
  • I sure love the smell of Chekhov Guns in the morning. Or at any time of day really. Everything is coming together now and it's great to see it's been assembled with proper care and foresight. Some of the smaller things like the seemingly anonymous mook with ability to lock doors being the linchpin of entire Sakurada system or Kei's simple ability eventually turning to be one of the heaviest obstacles to the plans of the villain* are just plain delicious.
  • * Speaking of which, he doesn't really deserve the name at least so far. I found his plan fairly reasonable and understandable and that was even before the viewer learns at what great personal cost to him Sakurada was established. Truly the Kreacher of our times.
  • Soma constantly trolling Kei with voice messages from 2 years back is hilarious.
  • While direction can't for the life of it leverage the stronger moments of the source material like they deserve it, Soma x Kei was a nice bit and its impossible not to feel for her. The truth and the reasoning for her death 2 years ago are both ingenious and all sorts of fucked up.
  • The 2nd ED's imagery is both simple and bit out of there but with another great song choice I think it works well. I wonder what's that imagery is trying to spoil for me, that the two versions of Sumire will fuse or something. Or just that the 2nd version will come to think of herself as the true Sumire Soma.

where is Wotakoi Amazon?!?! God this is why I hate them for anime, they are so inconsistent. Some weeks they don't have subs, some weeks the episodes don't go up on time, and sometimes they don't go up at all! Amazon if you wanna keep doing this anime thing please get your shit together.

Not sure if it's up in other countries yet but it's still not available in Canada

Well I guess if you guys are really interested in scores....ann has franxx at around 6.9-7.0.

Personally it's a Mitsuru/10 so far at episode 14 since I stopped there. Not the best but not the worst.

The only thing that matters is what you think of the work. And if you're using scores to tell which show to watch next, you're doing it wrong. A look at the key visual is usually more than enough, really. There are bad shows with good key visuals? Sure. But there are no good shows with good key visuals. Character design is an underrated art.

The manga is over 100 chapters I think, but I doubt the anime will adapt all of it. I'm curious if they plan on adapting the post time skip stuff, since some of the stuff in the OP as well as the first part of the first episode suggests yes, but that also happened pretty far into the manga so I'm not sure how you fit it in unless it's multiple cour. Some of the best stuff happens afterwards though, so I hope they do

Hinamatsuri 5
First half was pretty good. Second half was amazing. The Hitomi reactions were too funny.

Aggretsuko 4-6
This keeps getting better. Fenneko twirling around a glass of wine during her explanation was hilarious. Glad we are getting more Washimi and Gori.
PROTIEN

Wotakoi 4
Probably the strongest episode of the show so far. Though I didn't particularly need it to get too serious towards the end.

Washi means well but this can't end well for poor Retsuko can it?

Emiya-family 5
Bamboo shoots always look appetising but I think they're really easy to fuck up cooking or the flavour can be shitty. Might give this dish a shot at some point.

Comic Girls 3
This just isn't jiving with me and i dunno why i keep giving it chances

Megalo Box 5
What a turn of events .... There's no way he is out, it just can't happen.

Grancrest ep.17

Prince Douchbag didn't suffer enough
Marrine is gonna go postal now though....

Bad and disappointing. The worst thing about it are the implications that it's not over.

Gatou seems a bit sad about the cuts they had to make, but it was a jam packed episode already even with the OP/ED omitted. It'd be nice if they could do a director's cut for the BDs.

Lostorage Conflated WIXOSS 5

Good guys are losing left and right, Tama is getting dragged back in, Chinatsu is making everything difficult again, Akira has a new target, Yuzuki is gone(what happened to her body?), and Kiyoi is already fighting the final boss. Well, the stakes certainly are ramping up fast.

Mahou Shoujo Site 5

I like how Aya just doesn't care that Yatsumura has been doing terrible things as well. Though I guess what she considers moral is seriously warped seeing what she's been through. Sarina suffers from the talking instead of killing syndrome everyone here suffers from, but she was still the most entertaining part of the episode honestly.

Toji no Miko 17

Lore lore lore. I actually think it's mostly interesting, and all three parts of Tagitsu are things I want to explore more of, but it really dominates this show more than it should. Kind of lost on why the directors are working with Tagitsu in the first place, especially the one that isn't crazy.

I think Pokemon Sun and Moon has a score it doesn't deserve because of people salty about the art style change.

Huh...
children show in general have low scores. probably because people who watch it actually use the 1-10 scale?

But I agree completely. SM is pretty much... outstanding? The art is unique, the approach to the Pokémon is fresh, the episodic structure does not get old due to very good story moments, every single character is well established and developed... I wouldn't be lying if I told you that it's my favorite Pokémon series.
