If power is your main concern when buying a sports car, then the 86/brz is probably not for you. Same with other small sports cars like the mx5.
I'd rather have something, small, light, and nimble, than something that just has a lot of power.

Do all of you own the automatic or manual? I work for a Toyota dealer and the majority of the ones that come in are automatic.

Well that's tragic to hear.

I really want one of these, but I'd rather wait until I'm an age where insurance magically gets cheaper. By then the used prices should fall even more and I can pick one up for peanuts. I've been researching it for years and I'm still determined to own one of these, we'll see what a few more years do.

Luckily a friend of mine owned a BRZ so I got to drive it a bit, such a fun little machine after driving a crossover for years.

I have a '13 FR-S. My first manual/RWD car. I do like it, but it's not very practical. Thinking about selling it & eventually getting a Crosstrek with the GF. (She has an old Impreza wagon)

I was really thinking about getting a BRZ but ended up getting a Lexus instead. They are really fun to drive though. Probably best suited for manual transmission IMO

I preordered a BRZ when they were announced. Had it for roughly 1.5 years or so until I traded it in for a WRX. I live in a winter wonderland and after changing jobs my commute got longer and more dangerous after I learned the surrounding area where my job is....well....they never plow the snow and it got icy.

I LOVED the BRZ though. Amazing little car. Great speed. Super moddable. I'm really looking forward to the version 2 of the car in the next few years. If they somehow have a turbo AWD option, I'll trade in my current car within SECONDS.

Ive thought about getting one as my next car as im in the market for a 2 door sports coupe but the power is a little low for me personally. Love the way it sits and the thr handling though. Nothing a little modding can't fix i guess.

I'd love one of these in Grey. Still thinking about if I should or not. I just don't drive enough to justify it at the moment!

How is it with the Edlebrock Supercharger? Man, I really wanted one back when I had mine but I got a hell of a deal on the Phantom Electric and for the cost it was more than worth it, despite how buggy and homebrew it was.

Pretty transformative. It's like a different, much, much faster car. 83% increase in power, 58% increase in torque.

It's a really solid car. I waited and waited for them to be released, and then bought an orange FR-S the second it arrived at the lot.

It wasn't the sportiest feeling car I've owned (S2000), wasn't anywhere near the quickest (370Z), nor was it the most comfortable (GTI), but it was an amazing all around car.

I would grab another one in a heartbeat if I could actually fit two car seats in the back. The GTI is probably better though, other than looks wise.

I fit 4 people once
Its hell but if you got drunk friends or something they'll bitch and moan and so will you with the seat max forward but you can physically fit them

Also with the frs being my only car I chose it over the miata for practicality, with 4 seats (even if no ones sitting there the back seats become a shelf for me) and the ability to fold the rear seats flat and transport larger objects it was very appealing

I test drove it and the new competition package or w/e it's called. Too anemic for me, no idea why they didn't add a turbo on the competition version. Ended up with an m240.

Still driving a 2000 Celica GT, but I do daydream about owning one, if that counts. :P

But at 47, my next new car will, realistically, likely be a family sedan. I still have fun driving my little sporty coupe to and from work, but a smoother ride all around seems to be in my future.

I've driven my buddy's FR-S. It's a fun car to drive and handles well. My problem with it is that it LOOKS like it should be faster than it actually is. Like, it isn't a problem for what it is - more that my expectation was that it would be more.

Amazing car, great choice. Test drove it. It pissed me off that it was about $20K over my budget here in Trudeau land.

Wow, amazing gains! Any downsides? MPG I assume but any mechanical issues? I test drove the frs/brz 3 times but could not get over the low torque. I'm old and spent too many years riding 600cc motorcycles, so I'm kinds done with reving the crap out of an engine for power and prefer torque these days. But I still want small and light.

MPG for sure, haha. But it's only been about a month, and it'll improve as the ECU relearns.

Other than that, no real downsides to speak of. I'm pretty near the limits of the stock clutch, and all of a sudden 255 width Super Sports don't feel like enough tire, but those are good problems as far as I'm concerned.

It's smooth and drives like stock if I want it to. It's just a ton more usable power everywhere.

Had a GT86 from 2013 until 2016. It was a fun car to own. Sold it to get a Fiesta ST, which is more suited as a daily driver / "find a parking place in an inner city environment"-car.

I own at 2015 BRZ and love it. I used to own the original AE86 back in the day, so this feels like a true successor to that iconic car.

6 speed here. I can't imagine having an awful CVT auto in this car

Also for those asking, I love the car to pieces. I can throw the thing in any corner at pretty much any speed and it handles it no problem. Easily the most fun I've had driving a car before. I remember reading Jeremy Clarkson adores the car as well.

Been looking into a new car and the 86 caught my eye since Ford decided to cut off cars from their American lineup. Was really interested in MK4 Focus ST but that's not coming here, my only other option is the GTI if I want to stay in hatch form. It probably will come down to MX5 vs 86, both impractical cars for daily living for me.

I own a 14 White FR-S. Fantastic car. Owned a few other lightweight FR cars in the past and this thing is just a blast to drive.

I'll be selling though in the next month or so, as I'm moving into the bay area and my GF and I are just going to share one car and hers is way more practical.

I don't know why you all are acting like these cars aren't practical... my wife and I use ours for pretty much everything. Long road trips? No problem! Costco runs? No problem! Friends without legs? No problem!

Thanks! I think so too. Nice, well-sized wheels can make any car look good though.

These are the highlights right now:
  • Edelbrock supercharger (10 psi)
  • JDL catless UEL header
  • CSG x MXP Touring86 exhaust
  • Ecutek tune from Drift-Office
  • KW V3 Coilovers
  • Verus Engineering camber plates
  • Verus Engineering rear control arms
  • Verus Engineering toe links
  • Work Kiwami wheels (18x9.5 +38)
  • Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires (255/35/18)
  • Valenti Revo taillights (HC2)
Flex-fuel, injectors, an oil cooler, and a new clutch are up next.

I can at least fit a set of golf clubs into an 86, not so much into a Miata.

I've transported a 7 foot ladder in the brz. Made multiple ikea shopping trips including matrresses and medium sized items. And it fits four full sized tires when I need to transport those. The rear seats are also usable in a pinch for kids/shorter adults. The main reason I picked it over a Miata.

Lol. What a ridiculous statement. Maybe below 40k, but 80k? GTFO!

I don't understand what's so ridiculous about it. It's what I want out of a car. Why would some other car being more expensive automatically mean that I would like it more?

I ended up getting an automatic =) At the time I was doing a lot of commuting in stop and go Seattle traffic and having to deal with a manual would have sucked. My wife also needed to be able to drive it here and there and I don't really trust her with a manual. The auto doesn't have that garbage CVT in it. The paddle shifters are extremely responsive if you wanted to go that route.

My wife runs a BMW 3 series (328xi) alongside my FR-S and the 3 series drives like a $40,000 car should. At the limit my FR-S will gently nudge me like "hey, starting to slip here" and the BMW will be like "I WILL DIE BEFORE I LET YOUR TIRES SLIP".

Both have their uses, the BMW is faster, the FR-S is more fun at the limit.

I mean, you listed 4 $70,000 cars...

The Corvette Stingray would be the only reasonable next step I see from that list (if it isn't your only car).

Theres also buying a used Porsche 911, base or turbo variant. Hits the same vibe, Lightweight and planted. Also rear engine.

Its all about preference. The only car under 80k I'd consider over an 86 is the Alfa Romeo 4c The other cars you listed I wouldn't want, and aren't even the same class of car.

I thought about going this route, but knowing people with old porsches and the costs of maintaining them properly pushed me towards the BRZ. I'll probably get one eventually, in the meantime thrashing on and gradually improving my BRZ is fun. I was seriously considering the M235, but it was easily 2x the cost and while substantially faster, it felt like a standard coupe. Cayman or 911 are much closer to the BRZ driving feel.

Whenever people ask about practicality I always compare it to my old Charger. That thing was a moose so it had way more room in both the trunk and backseat.

Still love my BRZ more.

S2k is so much better built in all reguards, it will problably be worth more still in 5 years time.

Bunch out there still: https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/l-Used-Honda-S2000-d596

Have a monte carlo blue S2k myself. In the UK tho so they are even more scarce. Think there are only about 6000 in the wild here now and only 1500 GTs which mine is.

People keep introducing them to hedges. Or covering them in tat.

That my Skoda Superb Estate will hit 60 in the same time is neither here nor there.

maybe if you could guarantee toyota prices for service when i have to take it in to the shop
The costs of maintaining luxury cars is higher as well, its not just a base msrp of 100k and then $35 jiffy lube oil changes, spread apart and cheap engine service intervals and autozone headlight replacements like a <$25k car has
You dont think that super quick shifting Porsche pdk costs more to service than a stick shifts clutch disc/throw out bearing?

On paper sure we'd all be riding around in M5's with aftermarket upgrades but IRL I'm not having my only damn car be a cutting edge bmw, paying multiple thousands when the auto adjusting suspension goes to shit or the $1-2k water pump replacement costs

Now if we're trading cars for the list the guy posted above earlier AND i get a $20k fund for keeping it going that's another story but a straight trade with nothing else? I wouldn't either, I'm not a rich man I got mine for 19k otd expoecting economy car maintenance prices and tire/brake prices

Those big, wide tires and huge brakes aren't free to replace either

Hell if I had that kind of money I STILL would have gotten a 4 door sedan of some sort and a (weak only 180hp lol) Lotus Elise for fun times

There's a reason twin owners DIDNT buy that 04 carerra with 80k miles on it for the same price you know
