I think Face ID is interchangeable with Touch ID now, even with apps that haven't been updated, I don't think Chase changed anything because they should have changed the UI as well I'm one update.
That should be the case but weirdly Chase and Citi did actual updates that change wording in their app terms and settings menus to Face ID, but they just didn't change the UI. So weirdly all their graphics and menus listing Touch ID correctly now say Face ID but the screen size is old school

when I was restoring my apps to the X, I opened Tweetbot for the first time and it read my face, got my password from keychain and just logged me in without any interaction

I was sold on FaceID in that moment

No, it's $69 if you keep the plan for a third year. You can buy three years of protection for $159 and cancel anytime for a pro-rata refund or transfer the warranty to the next iPhone.

The biggest difference is square trade charges a $99 deductible for screen repairs at the apple store vs $29 for the apple care.

Has Squaretrade said how they are going to handle shattered back glass? Will you just have to pay the deductible on a complete replacement?

Yes, they say you take it to the Apple Store and they will refund you the difference when you send them the receipt.
After talking to a couple of people who used Squaretrade, I'm going to go ahead and sign up over AppleCare+.

Notch is fine. It's what you lose because of the notch that annoys me. Gotta reach for the hard to reach control center to see Bluetooth battery and battery %. They need to offer some settings for what to show up there.

I'm more irritated by the dumb nav bar. Let me turn it off apple!

I thought I'd hate losing the battery percentage, but I actually prefer not seeing it now. I used to pay close attention to the number going down and wonder what app was causing the battery to deplete. Now I find myself just relaxing and enjoying the phone.

I do think a hybrid mode would be cool though, replacing the battery icon with a percentage when it starts to get pretty low, like 20%.

I just got mine. The contextual swipe up to exit apps is retarded. I have been frustratingly stuck in apps several times trying to figure it out (for example, in Netflix). A system wide swipe up from the lightning connector side as a home button would have been much better imo.

Earlier on today I accidentally clicked on the wrong app in the App Store, and when the Touch ID prompt popped up (I'm on a 6) I hit cancel and was safely able to avoid purchasing it. If I'd had Face ID would that have fired and purchased the app without me having the option to decline it?

You have to double press the power button to confirm purchases

When purchasing an app with iPhone X , it asks you to double tap the side button after you press buy to make sure you want to buy the app. Once you double press, Face ID authenticates you and the app download begins

So you tap the box with the price, then the confirm thing comes up and then you double tap the power button to trigger the faceid?

Edit: Ok that last comment cleared it up. Thanks. Now all you have to worry about is someone doing that and then pointing the phone at you and saying "look at this" to trick you into buying an app, ha.

A quirk I've run into with my X. On my 7 Plus, running iOS 7, when I would AirPlay something--anything, regardless of app--it would show up in the 'media' portion of control center. That doesn't appear to be the case on the X, for some reason? This morning, for example, I'd been playing a Netflix movie for my kid to be distracted by in the morning, and when I AirPlay'd MSNBC to my Apple TV, the Netflix app was still the one in control of the 'media' part in control center, despite no longer being in control. Anyone else?

I could be mistaken but isn't there a $69 a year charge on top of the initial $120 making it only $9 less than AppleCare?

Unless I am understanding wrong, that 69$ a year charge is after the initial coverage period is up, so after 2 years.

What? The swipe up from the bottom is system wide.

Unless you mean orientation wise? In which case it makes more sense to always be from the bottom of the current position, not always from the lightning connector.

So I remember in the old dark days of batteries, it was a bad idea to leave your device on a charger all day, or always be charging it when it wasn't low throughout the day. Is that still the case today? Reason I ask is because I got a wireless charging pad for my desk at work, and my instinct is to just set my phone on that during the day while I'm working. Is that gonna be bad for the battery over time though?

It can be annoying/difficult to activate in landscape orientation.

Any app in particular? I've honestly had zero issue with it. Are you using a case or something?

In addition to this, is it bad for the battery to constantly be putting it on and off that wireless charger throughout the day?

I mean, it's the same type of battery, right? Leaving it on a wireless charger is still leaving it on a charger. It's not like the battery tech or chemistry changed - just the charging interface. Right?

Got my 256GB Silver (UK) today, this product is absolutely amazing. The industrial design is phenomenal, I love the stainless steel (reminds me of OG iPhone), the UI is super snappy, swipe based multitasking is superb. Face ID works like magic, I love how it shows only that there is a message until I look towards the phone. Best product Apple has ever made.

Well, I guess that's what I'm asking - what's the current status of battery charging tech? Is it bad to be off and on the charger all day? Should I wait til battery is under 10% to charge? Or is it fine to just pop it on there whenever?

Yeah, the Now Playing widget is the glitchest part of iOS11 for me bar none. I've found that if you force quit the app that's hogging it it sometimes goes back to where it should be

Current batteries measure their health by discharge cycles, not charge cycles. So plug in whenever you want, it's fine. Doesn't make a difference. Also the phone will stop charging at 100% anyway even if you leave it plugged in. More information:

What is the deductible on a back glass repair, though? Squaretrade doesn't seem to list deductibles on their website, which is weird to me. They just say stuff like "the most common deductible is $99" or "the lowest deductible is $25".

Which basically also means that if you casually keep placing your phone on a wireless charger instead of just a table, you will discharge and use your battery less, theoretically giving it a longer life.

So my iPhone just turned off and now it does not do anything. Just a black screen. Connecting it to power does not help and it does not get detected by iTunes. I can't get it into DFU-Mode either.

You mean that it only shows the content of the message when you look at it. It should still show the "locked' notification.
I really liked that but have since turned it off. I like to read the notifications when the phone is on the table, desk, or laying next to me. I only pick it up when I need to respond in some way to one of them.

One of the things about going from a 6 Plus to a X is all the new features that I have missed from the last two years. Force touch and live photos are a thing I am just discovering how to use. The extra RAM is phenomenal as well.

Clips updated today with TrueDepth support..

1. that is impressive af. fast tracking gives a slight blur, but moderate to slow tracking is nearly flawless
2. lolol my phone is hot as hell after using it for just a few minutes. Can't imagine the horsepower the X uses to generate those scenes.

between Clips, selfie Portrait Lighting, and Animoji, apple is resoundingly answering the question "yeah but why does anyone need a phone that powerful?"

You're doing the new way to do DFU mode, yes? Volume up and release, volume down and release, hold side button for what feels like forever?

After a day with the phone, my feelings are pretty mixed. FaceID is cool when it works but it has not worked multiple times in various conditions in a day of usage and that almost immediately makes it less good than TouchID in my experience. The home button works very well and I think that change feels pretty natural. Portrait mode is wonderful, and the speed of the phone plus the display are all really nice. Just not pleased with finnicky FaceID has been, and didn't see a way to "train" it to better recognize my face, which is unfortunate.

I can confirm this totally works. When I first got the phone I probably had about a 60% accuracy rate, now I'm up to 99% through constant training.

Basically if the facial recognition hits a certain percentage of a match (I'm going to arbitrarily say 80%) but it's not high enough to unlock, when you enter your passcode it'll save the data that was "off" and add it to the existing information. So it'll constantly train.

This also means that if you give your passcode to a SO and it fails on their face as they put it in, it won't add some of their face data to yours, since it didn't meet that minimum threshold
The best way to setup Face ID remains to scan your face holding the X the way you usually hold your phone.
