Caught wind of this on the Wii U subreddit today, shared further on the Switch subreddit, and checked my own eShop.

Top comment by user AuraWielder noted:
On Nintendo's website, there is no longer an option to buy it digitally. Only physical options. Guess they really did remove it.

I was able to re-access the page through "Your Downloads" on the Wii U eShop's menu. If the game was purchased, you should be able to download it through there.

User Faefrye noted:
Yeah I just called customer service as well and the rep didn't even know about it and said that there is no official statement on it yet but if it's really taken down for good there should be a statement within the week.

What's your take on it?

Why would they want to compete with their own product or create consumer confusion?

Kinda wild how they're now charging $60 for a game that literally used to be a Club Nintendo freebie. Funky mode must have cost a fortune to make. That or they still haven't recouped the initial investment.

That is really weird. I can remember that I could buy it for 14 - 20 euro's. Maybe they don't want them to buy the same game for cheap?

Even though it's not the same game, not the same content.

They know reviewers will recommend the $40 cheaper Wii U Selects version. (half joke)

That's scummy as fuck; and there's no defence for it; so please don't try cold hard business logic brigade.

It was a player select game right? Perhaps due to the price, still, seems strange. Its a fantastic game, and while I think the price is certainly steep on this re-release, the reduced loading times, improved resolution and it being half the install size is certainly a nice benefit.

Wasn't there something odd about the Donkey Kong Country games being removed from the Virtual Console for awhile a few years back?

Lol i got it for free from club nintendo, still buying the switch version, but i think nintendo is mildly insane for charging 60 dollars

JSYK, you can still buy the 20 dollar wii u digital code or a 25 dollar physical copy off amazon

I think the message Nintendo is trying to get across here is:

THE WII U NEVER EXISTED. YOU SAW NOTHING. YOU PLAYED NOTHING.

*insert jedi hand motions*

Well that's pretty lame. Probably to avoid people getting the wrong search result when they look at the website. They don't want you knowing that the $20 option exists. The alternative would have been to just add more content to the Switch port.

The switch version will demolish the original sales despite the pricetag which is the sad part.

The pricing is so out of wack for Bayonetta and Tropical Freeze meanwhile Captain Toad is still the same budget price.

super scummy imo. i hope people call them out on this and they reverse this decision. yeah wiiu wasn't popular, but that doesn't mean there aren't still people who have one hooked up to their tv and now they can't buy this game digitally if they want to.

It's basic business 101;
  • Wii U sales were toxic which also affected software. So you offer something to incite customer to buy them whether it be lowering the price or giving it away for free,
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold really well, plus the Switch is also selling really well so Nintendo can net in a bigger profit due to a bigger install base.

Reminds of me what they did when the Virtual Boy flopped. It disappeared from everywhere. Nintendo Power never mentioned it again and removed it from their Top 10 charts. When Nintendo's website went up and detailed the company's history, no mention of the Virtual Boy was to be seen. They had a support section where you could even order NES and SNES parts and controllers. Virtual Boy? Nope. Super Smash Bros Melee removed the Virtual Boy from the trophee shelf when set to non-Japanese. NOA absolutely DID NOT want you to know the Virtual Boy was ever a thing.

This situation feels like déjà vu...

Too funny. Maybe it's to avoid confusion, though I'd imagine only that Switch version would pop up on its version of the eshop

Another digital game removed with no advance warning. At least those who bought it should be able to re-download it. For now.

It's fantastic on Wii U, and a great option if you already have the system and want to save $40.

If I was a business owner, I absolutely would not want any limelight on any failed projects either, so this makes perfect sense. Insane how subtle they are about it all haha

To be fair, the virtual boy jokes returned with the 3DS and beyond.

Wii U will always be referenced in stuff like smash because its why all these good games exist to begin with.

It must be a simple mistake guys. I'm sure they didn't mean to delete. They probably meant to change the price tag to $60.

Wow.. Nintendo valued the game at $20, but now that there's more demand, they're just gonna pretend that never happened and charge 3X the cost for an easy mode and remove the ability to get the previous version for the previous cost..Fuck off Nintendo, this is almost EA levels of scumbag if true.
