- First episode on the service is the longest single time running one, Earthbound
- Episodes will still come to YouTube, but this allows people to support him on Prime where he makes more money
- While plenty of episodes are now up, there are remastered episodes on the way

Important to note that this is seemingly region locked. They are only available for American and UK consumers. Meaning everyone else in the world has to wait to see the new episodes, even if you pay from Prime. Seems like VPNs will not work, as well.

Also Prime doesn't even exist in most of the world. Ah well.

I've always been partial to the Pong Consoles episode. Good mix of history and humor.

Still can't believe how many of these damn thing there were.

A close second is the Tiger Electronics episode.

I actually played a few of these things as a kid and remember thinking they were boring as shit.

Just got around to watching the EB episode, spoils the fuck out of the game but having already played and beaten the game myself it sure did remind me just why I fucking love it so much.

I should hop into a replay of it soon. I was able to obtain a complete copy a few years ago at an incredibly reasonable price and I pray that I never have to part ways with it.

now available on youtube for anyone interested

it's strange how i played earthbound to completion but i barely remember anything about the game..you would think that a game this strange would create some immortal memories..but all i can remember are the big pencils, the desert part and not much more...but this video did manage to make me remember some other interesting parts...like the meditation sequence.

also strange how the final boss didn't really left any lasting impression on me...seems like the entire creepy imagery flew over little child me

For me it's funny thinking about the Undertale comparisons. I mean I knew they were there, but I also hadn't thought about Earthbound since finishing it in the early 2000s.

Such a bad choice.

I can't see them there from Germany. It's not in the German Video Prime and on the US it has an IP lock. Great.

So no early episodes, which is not that wild and no remastered episodes for me, that sucks. :/ And I actually would love to watch them like a series on Prime, choose which season or episode I want without looking through playlist.

Too bad.

I'm happy for him!

This was great, but my absolute favorite is Swordquest. It's not even an angry episode but it's truly interesting (I've never heard of the games before) and I love stories from the cavemen era of videogames.
This is one of my favourites as well. Love his passion and the subject matter.

Man, who is running YT? They're messing up bad if they're losing talent like this.

Happy for James. He was the inspiration for so many Youtubers out there that made a living off of that inspiration.

I've always compared Mother 2 and 3 to Monty Python's Holy Grail and Life of Brian. Holy Grail is more wacky, out there and irreverent whereas Life of Brian still has all that, but with more structure and heart. But you're right: it comes down to personal preference, but both Mother 2 and Holy Grail remain my favorites.

If this is your fancy way of saying life of Brian is better than holy grail, I agree. Holy grail is still very good obviously.

Tis but a scratch!

I know he is a respected figure in the video game youtube community... but his channel isn't that huge, his content isn't that polished, nor do I think his comedy is exactly something youtube would be excited to promote (it is primarily poop jokes). I am not sure they are super sad to see him poached.

Don't get me wrong, James seems like a nice guy, but his content never really evolved. It is what it is.

Good to hear it's up on YouTube. Going to watch when I can. But I'm still hoping he can get the amazon prime video region restrictions lifted soon like he said he would look into. Want to watch in Japan but all you can watch is the AVGN movie. Hopefully it will be fixed sooner than later

That wasn't much of an exclusivity period! Can't imagine that he or Amazon will be making much money if the exclusivity period is THAT short.

Wow, this isn't part of an official upload anywhere now? That's a travesty. Similarly brought me to to tears years ago.

Nope, there's actually quite a few of the cinemassacre videos that don't exist officially anymore. Luckily there's a YouTube channel that's finding archives of them and uploading him to his channel.

That Earthbound episode was great, I've watched quite a few retrospectives on it and i think he captured the charm of the game as well as some of its frustrations better than quite a few that cover it, and he seemed genuinely impressed by the game. One of his better episodes, for sure, and at 40 minutes, wow.

I've been watching Classic Game Room 2085 on Amazon Prime Video and I watched the new AVGN episode. I don't really understand how this earns them more money but if it does then I'm happy to check in to watch their videos on a different service.

James is great - first discovered him by chance just as he was starting out. His first two reviews (I think) were Simon's Quest and TMNT, which were the two very first games I ever owned, received for my 10th birthday in 1990, so they struck a real chord (although I love both those games unconditionally). He's a bit of a luddite though, I can't believe he made his career on the NES and still plays his games direct from console to HDTV and just shrugs his shoulders about the lag he even admits is awful. Just fucking listen to what Mike is telling you you dickhead. Gah!

...because he was one of the progenitors of the act which has morphed into toxic gamer entitlement and a crushing cynicsm in the hobby by people who can't tell that it's an act?
People have been doing that forever. He didn't invent it. Nor did he somehow enable the existence of cynical people who don't abjectly worship a product on the mere premise that since someone worked hard on it, it's automatic gold.

Wth is a "remastered" episode of AVGN? Just higher-resolution?

On the topic of the Nerd, I am really happy to see that more recent episodes has really toned-down what made him famous (screaming rants, unimaginative cramming of crass words into new insults, just general "angry" behavior.) and I loved the Earthbound episode because it was more of an honest, thoughtful review. I can't watch a lot of him these days and I definitely can't watch older episodes.

Interesting parallel to make about him and the genesis of gamer-entitlement, never thought about that...

It's crazy how the AVGN's Earthbound video in less than a day surpassed my favorite video on the internet about Earthbound (The Happy Video Game Nerd's review and subsequent deep dive into the franchise's tragic history in the west). It took the HVGN 6 years to get to 300,000+ views and James got there in a matter of hours.

Fun fact, this brilliant HVGN Earthbound episode is briefly featured at 2:16 in the AVGN's own video.

I highly recommend this to any Mother series fan:
