So the show made me want to actually read past the first book and uh, Caliban's War is so much better than Leviathan Wakes that its not even funny. The jump in quality is wild. Are they all that good going forward?
No. Book 3 is okayish and book 4 is really really bad. 5 is very good.

Started the first season last night and I really enjoyed it - I have the fear it will be cancelled, but I've already read the first 3 books and am happy to finish the story elsewhere if that's the case. Still - great quality Sci-fi, which is refreshing coming from Lost in Space.

A roleplaying session IIRC? The guy playing the medic had to drop out, hence his sudden death?

I know it was originally intended to be an MMO universe.

Yes.

Ty Franck began developing the world of The Expanse as an idea for a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. After a number of years the idea shifted to become the setting for a tabletop game. Abraham, who had already written several books on his own at this point, noticed the depth of the setting that Franck had created and thought they should make a book series out of it, "People who write books don't do this much research"

Jared Harris has to be one of the most underrated actors working. Within this decade, He's had lead roles in Mad Man, The Terror, Expanse, The Expanse and The Crown. And I didn't piece each one together right away Outside of The Crown and Terror.
I remember him best from Resident Evil Apocalypse. And now that I looked at his IMDb, I didn't realize that he was the Old Will in the Lost in Space movie. Wow.

Heh, another cocky commander who thinks they know everything going on and what to believe, though Souther's not so sure. Not that Coytar wasn't lying about her surviving of course lol.

Heh, now he wants to take command.

Welp.
Woops.
Mr. Asshole with that dead ass shook face.
Damn...

Edit: Oh there we go, so that's why he's been so gung ho.

Fuck that milquetoast Secretary General. He's like Trump in that he does what the last person he speaks to says.

I wouldn't compare him to Trump, the Secretary General is atleast trying to do the right thing but is surrounded by shitty advisors. Compared to Trump who is just wrong and actively pursues the worst options.

It just happens that he is surrounded by advisors who want the wrong thing and a wannabe Hitler-esque character trying to consolidate power to eventually take over

Oh right, I knew I totally recognized that first officer type guy that helped Souther, but couldn't think of it during the ep but I remembered him from Killjoys.

It was nice to see Errinwright be absolutely shocked at what happened, though. It's awesome that the two villains had kind of the same moment. Errinwright with 2 million people dying and Mao with realizing the weight of using kids for his science experiment. Errinwright doubles down on his fuckup while Mao is seemingly having a change of heart.

to me it looked more like Erinwright orchestrated that failure that led to the launch of the nuke.

I don't think he intended for that to happen. He's just taking advantage of it now.

Errinwright was shook but the follow-up revelation that it was the canceled strike as the cause gave him the perfect enemy to push his guilt onto and harden his position.

Why was he so gung ho
Not 100% sure but Admiral Nguyen being aware of what's going on and of the project seemed to be the implication while watching live when Mao received a message on his pad (Edit: about 39 mins into the ep) that he was coming to take control of the project so soon after Nguyen took command of the ship. Which explains why he was so focused on keeping Souther from learning anything.
Since the message said that the Agatha King was now coming to take control of the project I took that to imply that the person now in command of the ship knows about the project and/or has been informed where to go by directing the ship right to Io.

And when UNN Admiral Nguyen (Byron Mann) shows up and pulls rank, acting very interested in Cotyar, Souther immediately suspects the spy is telling the truth about Mao's secret ties to Errinwright. It doesn't take much to see that Nguyen is in on it, too—a situation that's gonna get even more tense when he takes control of the Agatha and directs the ship toward Io, where he plans to take over the protomolecule project to ensure that Errinwright will get his alien-child hybrid army.

I was afraid the budget took some cuts, especially the space battle in episode 2 didn't look as nice as in season 1 or 2, but this scene in this weeks episode looked really neat. I like how we see the missile defence system in action.
