What's the general consensus on the Daily Show now that it's been few full years since Trevor Noah took over? I tried for the first few weeks and stopped after not laughing once. Trevor Noah seems like a funny-cute guy but I just wasn't feeling it. I thought maybe it'd take some time for him to hit his stride and so I tried watching clips of the show on YouTube and nope, still feels utterly toothless.

It's hard for me to articulate exactly what I'd want from a Daily Show host. Cute isn't really it. I feel like the show hasn't had the same causticity that it had when John Stewart was doing it.

Samantha Bea's Full Frontal seems the most Daily Show-esque of the Daily Show clones. It makes me think that maybe she should have taken over...

Yeah I am gonna have to disagree here.

I was a MASSIVE fan of Stewart. Watched him for YEARS and it took some time to get used to Trevor's style, but once I did I found it to be completely watchable and entertaining. Its my usual bedtime show now.

I don't want a Stewart clone anyway. I want someone to do their own take on the position. Not copy someone else's. Especially since Stewart is utterly irreplaceable.

I haven't watched it, but he can't possibly be a worse host than John Oliver. It's a shame when the host is by far the worst element of a talk show.

I really like Trevor everywhere I see him that isn't the Daily Show, but I still think he's doing fine

Trevor jokes and satire lack bite. Stephen Colbert delivered devastating takedowns through satire. John Stewart went for the jugular every week. Samantha Bee kicks idiocy in the balls every week. Trevor gently slaps reality with a silk glove.

He isn't insufferable but he isn't very funny or particularly dynamic as a comedian. I'm not a fan.

Noah lacks the viciousness that the show requires. It probably means he's a nicer person, but in my opinion the show is just flat in comparison to even nu-Colbert.

Not a fan. Even though I agree with a lot of what he says, it's delivered in an insufferable, sanctimonious tone.

The Daily Show has gone from being a daft but very intelligent show to an echo chamber / applause factory.

Trump's election was the final nail in the coffin for late night political comedy. John Oliver and Sam Bee still put out great stuff but it almost leans closer into genuine journalism than political satire at this point. Everyone else...lol nah

I also tried at first and gave up. I was a avid watcher for almost fifteen years too. Every once in a while someone goes "it's much better now" but I still just don't care for him as a host. There's other stuff out there now so it isn't a loss, but it is sad it isn't the institution it once was.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is just a much, much better show. To me Noah doesnt have the teeth to deal with the political analysis/satire that Oliver does very these days and he lacks the energy and charisma of John Stewart.

Lets face it, following up Jon Stewart was a poison chalice from the start. They should have just closed the show.

Thing I don't like about Samantha is it seems like she is taking down to the audience at times... She never clicked with me

As far as ranking the DS Cast as it's spun off...

Stewart was the King, Colbert held second for a long time but Oliver has snatched that crown... Carrel/Corddry/Helms, then Lewis Black, Hodgman/Munn/Kilborn... Everyone else then Trevor and Samantha

I think Noah does a great job, and the show is consistently enjoyable and rewarding to watch.

He's not Jon Stewart... but who is? I enjoy the format of, and research that goes into, Jon Oliver's show, but, from a comedic standpoint, Trevor Noah is more versatile (to say the least), more subversive, and just plain more human and relatable.

It has gotten better, I was feeling the same early on. He has found a style that fits him more.
And the other reporters have done some pretty good segments, too.

I really like Sam Bee, but she can be a bit "preaching to the choir" at times.

Also, Samantha Bee and John Oliver are only on once a week with Oliver taking months off in preparation. Kind of an unfair comparison.

The best thing about these three is that unlike Colbert and Stewart used to be, they present and represent way more voices. I like the current timeline and wouldn't want to change hosts.

I 100% disagree with the concept of this thread, I think Noah has really come into his own lately and every time I catch a clip on youtube I love it, a lot more variety then colbert with his own style, dude has a ton of energy and does some funny voices just like colbert!

I've not seen it for a while, I should give it another shot.

He seems like a nice bloke, and he is smart and funny, but I didn't think he was right for the role whenever I saw him in it.

It didn't take me that long to dump the show, but I also wanted to give him a chance. He's a very... both-sidesian kind of figure if that makes sense? He seems to be less, how do I put this, hard-hitting as Jon Stewart and he seems a bit oblivious to certain things. The Nightly Show by Larry Willmore was such a better show and I wish he'd stuck around instead.

I don't know. I haven't watched him in months at this point, probably over a year, so I can't articulate my thoughts very clearly.

Now if you wanna talk about a waste of talent, let's talk about Jordan Klepper's new show. With Jessica Williams out, he was the best Daily Show correspondent (in close contention with Roy Wood, Jr; and, frankly, they're better together, anyway), and his program is fucking abysmal.

He's way better in his "Between the scenes" videos that they upload online, so I think the problem is more the writing staff than anything related to his personality. Unlike Jon and especially Colbert though, Trevor has absolute zero skill at selling bad material. Like, it is actually painful to watch him bomb.

Oliver is just the worst though. His humor material is so repetetive and drawn out it actually totally fucks with the pacing of his informative news segments, compared to the Daily show that uses it to keep the momentum through much shorter segments. His show would be better served dropping the comedy entirely, which is probably as backhanded a compliment as I could give the show, lol.

I only follow the youtube channel but while I thought his tenure was rough at first and lacked bite, the show has greatly improved over time. My only issue is that most of the correspondents just aren't that great but I like Noah.

I was nervous for how the show would go on at first, but he really came into his own after a while, and definitely pulled it into his own style, which personally I like a lot more than him trying to be Stewart 2.0.

In general I like that the night shows have such variety now, I can watch each one and get fairly different takes on an issue that still comes from a common sense viewpoint.

Noah's probably my favorite next to Colbert right now.

Yeah I am gonna have to disagree here.

Basically.

Not-so-stealth edit: damn, all the distaste for John Oliver is really surprising lol. Love his show too, quite diferent from the others but I can see where his humor is polarizing.

Absolutely disagree. It was awkward at first when he began but he found his groove eventually and the show improved a lot. He's not Jon Stewart so I wouldn't recommend to watch the Daily Show with the notion that Trever Noah is going to simply imitate Jon and everything will be just like before. The Stewart era is over and we in the Noah era now. New show, new style, new delivery.

Yup. His between takes stuff is fantastic.

Glad I saw his last Netflix special live, he's a great comic.

It's also strangely fitting that 4 of your most well-known political satire shows are hosted by immigrants.

I can't stand any of their shows. Oliver, Noah, Maher , even Bee! And I loved Bee.

Wyatt Cenac and and Sarah Silverman are the only two people with political shows I like. I do think Kimmel and Meyers are great when they dip their toes into politics. Colbert oddly enough seems to shy away from it.

agreed. Noah is awful. I think they keep him on now out of sheer stubbornness so they don't admit their colossal failure in hiring him. He seems like a nice guy, just painfully unfunny. It was a tough act to follow, maybe impossible really.

my mid-20s shift of politics made me realize that TDS was always kind of shit, so I'm not as heartbroken as some

at least Stewart had some goofy charisma to string it along and had all star cohosts who all went on to good comedy careers

There are better and more vicious Trump critics out there, so he doesn't hold a candle to what I think Stewart could have done but I think the real test for any political comedy/satire comes when Trump leaves and the gags don't write themselves every day. Seriously, you just have to report the daily news from Washington these days in a parodistic manner and you don't need to come up with much written material of your own to be funny.

It's not that it's unwatchable. It's because you're looking for Stewart 2.0. If that's what you want/wanted, he was never going to "hit his stride".

I quite like him, he's not quite as good as Stewart or Colbert were at their top, but he's grown into the position and I have no reason to think he won't continue to do so.

Definitely prefer him to current day Colbert which kind of feels too diluted, and while I agree with Samantha Bee points, I'm not a big fan of the delivery, the show feels like Samantha is playing the role left-wing pundit but without any self awareness of that.

John Oliver has better material, but as far as delivery goes I think him and Trevor aren't too far off one another.

You guys should watched the 'behind the scenes' videos they put out, Trevor is so much better in his elements when he's off script.

Definitely agree with this, his "Behind the scenes" videos are usually much stronger than the regular skits, which makes me believe the show has the potential to get better with Trevor at helm.

I always enjoyed Noah more than Stewart, but atm I think I enjoy Seth Meyer and Colbert more than TDS, Conan is the best when he's at his peak, but sometimes with some guests he falls a bit flat

I was stuck in the waiting room of a hospital recently and it came on and I really couldn't find one bit of the show funny. I didn't think anybody on the show or any of the jokes were funny. I wish Comedy Central kept just streaming all of Jon's episodes like they did leading up to his last episode.

Being compared to Stewart is unfair.

I find him quite informative and insightful.

I watch highlights once a week, since i live in China.
