While Monkey is our glorious Champion, we do require a back-up in the case that Monkey is unable to participate in a game for whatever reason. This person will be asked to take her place if the need arises.

For a while, we weren't receiving names and I was worried that we wouldn't be able to send someone to fight for our cause. But everything changed when, suddenly, a valiant champion appeared and, with conviction, said:

Still amazed by that role honestly (and impressed by faircure) I would have cried and requested a 10h course from Geno to understand it.
I actually did cut 30 more cards with more complicated effects to make it simpler, originally it was a mix of Hearthstone/Yu-Gi-Oh.
I'm happy to be a replacement for mini mafia now that Monopoly doesn't need any.

Dr. Monkey has talked about it a bit here and there but if you're interested in learning more about her academic research into our little community here I highly recommend checking out the latest episode of the podcast she is on/cohosts, NYMG! It's the most recent episode, 171, and I believe the mafia discussion starts about a half hour into it? Either way it's a good listen and a great podcast! And you get to hear monkey shit talk/gush about how much she loves hates us. :3

Just finished listening to the podcast. It was a fun listen.
I guess I am in the afterglow of my game going really well. When you were talking about design and how important it is that struck a chord. I took hours and hours of agonising over game balance and how to make the game fun. I threw out like half my ideas because I wanted to make the game more fun for players rather than just pleasure from me tormenting people. In my design thread I had lots of questions. And then I still didn't get it right.
Initially I hadn't planned to give the last mafia unrestricted kills and then after Grizzly died I realised it was going to be an issue. And i ignored my reviewers too. I immediately PMd the reviewers titled "you guys were right" with the discussion if it was better to fix the game and make people happy or stick to my bad decision. And would fixing things mid-game be acceptible? Natiko and I agreed it was best to fix it. Then I was nervous tell the mods I was changing things because I didn't know if I could do that.
But the main thing for the mods is to keep players happy and it was clear changing the game would make it better so my decision was unanimously supported. I guess running a game has humanised the mods for me. They aren't the overbearing force they give the impression they are. When you get behind the curtain everyone is just trying to do their best and make sure everyone is having fun. I can say I was lucky that there was no major incidents during the game, nothing that couldn't be quickly fix.
And because town won most people are happy. I guess the only thing that I got pushback on from multiple people was how strict I was being with information and how game worked. And I was worried that not answering was going to cause issues. But after that initial problem everything went great. I hope your next game goes easier and the vote tool makes a huge difference. I can't imagine counting and formating votes by hand.
Yes! The mod team is this force just running around trying to make sure everyone is having a good time so people keep playing, so games keep happening, but it's not this separate thing, either; like you, stepping behind that curtain really showed me some things I might not have realized otherwise. Eye-opening. Same with design. I remember being so frustrated with Palmer and cabot 'cause they wanted to reign me in but I really didn't know what I was doing and they were really good reviewers who explained things to me - then when I did my next game (still to come), I knew a lot more and was able to see a bigger picture. I imagine that something like Monopoly, you get that right at once, because of the mechanics. But it's such a process. Even if you can do it quickly.
I love playing here but I'm just really fascinated by the whole thing, too, how it all works, how people keep things going, how we keep trying to improve, how much time and effort goes into everything for "just" some forum games (they're not "just" anything).

Slightly related to the ongoing discussion, and because I don't think it was ever said explicitly, if you feel like designing a game and run it with us, or you already have something in mind but don't know how the reviewing process goes, or you're just curious,in the Vault of Glass section on Outer Mafia dedicated to games ran on ResetEra everyone can see the design boards of such games, and see how was the communication between designer-reviewer, which changes needed to be made and why, how all parties balance a game.
It's important to me to archive these documents, so every future game will always have a dedicated space there with its design board.
