On this day 20 years ago, Initial D, a street racing manga about a young spaced-out teen named Takumi becoming the greatest rookie street racer in all of the region all thanks to his impeccable driving skill he developed through the years delivering Tofu for his dad's business on the Akina mountain pass togue as well as his trusty Toyota AE86 Sprinter Trueno, was adapted to an Anime series that would go on to have 4 full seasons, a movie, and a several OVAs, side stories, and re-adaptations.

The series would go on to gain a bit of a cult following among both anime fans and car enthusiasts alike and was many's first foray into the world of illegal Japanese street racing and would inspire others to become more invested in car culture in general (this was certainly the case for me).

Sure, the CG in the early episodes looks EXTREMELY dated for today, but this kind of approach was really the only way to convey the fluent movement of the cars. Of course, as the series went on, the CG and animation quality as a whole would improve as well (If you want to find the pinnacle of animation for the series, look no further than the Third Stage Movie).

Of course, the show's racing scenes are certainly the highlight and can really include some crazy moments (and if you ONLY care about racing, there is Battle Stage, which ONLY includes the racing).

However, it feels like I've neglected something, but I can't quite figure out what it is...
.
.
.
Oh yeah, that fucking SOUNDTRACK

Without a doubt, the aspect about that show that almost renders the manga IRRELEVANT is this show's phenomenal soundtrack, which primarily consists of tracks from a genre of music called Eurobeat (essentially, it's fast-paced techno dance music written by Italians, sung in English for the Japanese market) that was very popular in Japan in the 90s. If you've heard the songs Running in the 90's, Deja Vu, or Gas Gas Gas through other videos such as meme compilations, this is the show that made those songs famous, and boy there's more where that came from. The amount of excellent Eurobeat tracks in Initial D is immense, and there are many multi-hour megamixes for you to check out if you want more hype Eurobeat goodness:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snojs7Hxjn8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrdnucKzoSI (an underrated mix if you want to check out the origin of Eurobeat)

And it wasn't just Eurobeat music that made Initial D's soundtrack amazing, it was also thanks in part to the band M.O.V.E. and their excellent work on series' openings and closings (Outsoar the Rainbow, Rage your Dream, Gamble Rumble, Dogfight, and Blazing Beat are my personal favorite pieces).

Honestly, the sheer effort and quality put into this show's soundtrack is amazing. It's my favorite anime soundtrack of all-time, and it's perfectly valid to watch for the music and stay for the cool cars. That's what I did, and I fuckin loved my time with this show.

But seriously, what an amazing show this was. I honestly hope it gets some sort of revival, be it in a spiritual sequel or a remake with better animation. But in the meantime, if you want to check out this show, you can seriously go ahead and watch all of First Stage on YouTube. Funimation has uploaded all of it, so there's really no excuse to not at least check it out.

I'm catching up with Initial D content quite slowly, but it steadily grows on me. Japanese car scene was always interesting for me, but only recently I understood how impactful and influential was (and still is) this manga and anime. I absolutely embraced eurobeat greatness, and I'm still yet to watch the actual show in a proper way. This thing is a cultural phenomenon because it surely deserves to be that. Happy anniversary :)

Initial D definitely helped put my interest of cars into overdrive when it first came out.

I loved this show when I was younger, and it was definitely a big reason why I got into cars.

I fell off pretty hard in the later seasons, though. But I think starting from 4th stage, the races seem to be won by luck more than anything else, and that put me off.

My favorite episode is the battle between Takumi and Iketani.
I just love those episodes in battle anime where the main character is PISSED.
THE MANS HANDS ARE TIED TO THE WHEEL TOO JESUS

i saw the first seasons of the show a while ago and was able to rewatch all of it on youtube recently

hope eurobeat doesn't die. maybe it isn't popular as dance music (or whatever the intended purpose is), but i like it for running

This series inspired me to always get the 86 in all my racing games that had it as an option. MOVE is my favorite band of all time so the soundtrack is godly.

I actually loved the FC the most though. Ryosuke is the goat.

There is a remake! It's three separate hour long movies. Called Initial D Legend in English, or New Initial D in Japanese. I actually watched the first two this weekend.

The animation is incredible. It's easily the best Initial D has ever looked. They compressed the plot a lot to make it fit into three hours though.

However...

they changed the music.

THERE'S NO MORE FUCKING EUROBEAT

I hate car culture, but loved this anime. I watched the movie and maybe a couple other specials.

Whatever happened to Takumi? I thought I read something about a newer series after those where he became a professional racer.. Is that accurate?

It's just some J-Rock now. That might be OK for some people. But for me, Eurobeat is entwined with the show. It's way too perfect for it.

Only real familiarity I have with Initial D is the 3 Initial D Legend movies that I saw recently. They were all fantastic. I thought some of the techniques were pretty sick and there was some pretty good humor.

Note to self: Never ride shotgun with a professional drifter

I've watch the whole series (subbed, Funimation for earlier episodes, fansubs for later episodes). The character designs are super crude early on, but the racing segments are incredible throughout. Super tense, realistic driving feel, lots of gearhead jargon. The plot's passable too. It's really nice to watch a more grounded anime.

Favourite race:

Part 2

This is the best Eurobeat mix I've heard:

Love the show.

Still try to put some eurobeat on when playing a racing game, it just works.

Loved the show, still one of my favorite anime. Introduced me to euro beat and I often listen to a few mixes to this day still. I remember losing my shit during the Blind Attack and the music hit, still my hypest moment ever.

Yep. Worth noting the manga is worth a read for the incredibly detailed car mechanics.

Also, I liked the Chinese film.

And they changed the entire voice cast right? I think I saw one of these and said NOPE. The original cast is ingrained into my brain.

How is the proper way to watch Initial D nowadays?
The show after fifth stage still has not seen a physical release, and none of the main series has been released on Blu-ray. Stages 1-4 all have official DVD releases and you can watch those on YouTube (the stage 3 upload isn't official, but is still in very good quality). 1-4 can also be caught on Funimation's streaming site, I think. So basically, you have plenty of options for stages 1-4, but for 5th and final stages, you're on your own.

Fifth and final drastically changed the animation style, so I found it pretty boring.

Personally I think the arc loses a lot of momentum once he joins Project D.

And it bombed SPECTACULARLY.

The only good part of the remake is the very end.

Zero is full of the shitty rock music from Legend. You have to accumulate 300km and 1000km respective total to unlock two Eurobeat songs in the original release. They are slowly adding more Eurobeat tracks with each update because everyone complained so much.

The way Sega changed the steering from a full 900 degrees (two and a half rotations) to old ass 270 (stops hard left or right) for Zero can also fuck right off. I need an Arcade Stage 2 or 3 cabinet in my life.
