I'll at least be buying it on Steam and PS4 physical. The only debate is do I keep a sealed copy or not...I have a sealed Shenmue I JP, and the Jukebox version, as well as Shenmue II JP & Shenmue II PAL...and Shenmue II Xbox. I'm not much of a collector, though. Stuff like What's Shenmue and Shenmue USA I can't really be bothered paying for.

Hope it meets all you memories and expectations. Hopefully the fixes on the controls will make it even better for you. Lot of hopes and prayers for this game being developed by a bunch of folks who made cell phone games and those wonderful trailers. I mean the last trailer wasn't last august right? Sega wouldn't do a money grab, right?...Sonic Forces and Total War DLC says no way.

Think I will wait for some reviews. But again hopes and prayers.

Seriously I understand nostalgia...like I am really looking forward to Vanilla / Classic WoW. There's been no major improvements to the game since then...right?

I wonder what percentage of newcomers to the series will pick this up and stick it out till the end as I can imagine it will have aged given how much game design has improved over the years.

I'll definitely pick it up as #2 was in my top 3 games for over a decade but I'm worried now how I will fare now I'm 20yrs older.

I mainly just sit in the arcade all day when I'm waiting for the time to go by in Shenmue I. Also a good time to practice some moves in the parking lot.

I loved talking to everyone in town and learning new things. Especially the eastern folklore stuff. Was mesmorising as a kid.

Also it was was only after a few playthroughs that I found our about a relationship between two people in the town.

You... you mean you aren't buying a copy of every version available!?
I don't own a PS4 or an XBO, and I basically gave up on physical games close to a decade ago. If I get a good run of income leading up to release I might buy extra copies on Steam to give to friends, though.

I'll definitely pick it up as #2 was in my top 3 games for over a decade but I'm worried now how I will fare now I'm 20yrs older.
Haven't you played II in that time? Man. I play the series at least once a year.

You'll probably be fine with II, though.

From around 2001-end of 2005 I was busy writing for a gaming website so it was difficult finding the time to replay old games especially given that era of gaming anyway (so many good games frequently coming out) then out of the last 12 years I've spent 9 overseas so there was no way I was re-buying a DC, Shenmue & VMUs again when I had some in storage. I have considered repaying them recently as #3 nears but now I'll wait for the HD release and maybe, just maybe, sell my PAL copies of Shenmue 1&2.

From your experience of replaying them quote a lot, what do reckon is the part that drags the most?

Hm... I hope you're pleasantly surprised returning to II, then. To me it still feels like a game that holds a lot of secrets, which is pretty incredible given the amount of times I've played it. Like there's still some undiscovered nook or quirk of the game I've yet to discover, and sometimes there actually is.

Like within the last year I've learnt about the alternate way to get the bronze coin, the bootleg lighters, and Barry Jones secretly being the best darts rival in the game once he switches playing from his left hand to his right.

This is just personal opinion so don't take it as gospel, but to me Shenmue II feels quite modern. You can see how the trappings of the modern cinematic game evolved from this, rather than the original.

For me personally (in reference to Shenmue 1) the forklift driving portion of the game feels a bit too long. The actual job itself is fun, but they spread the events out too thinly over 5 days -- there's not enough to do at lunch time and at night -- they could've condensed it into 3 days, really, but I understand why they wanted it to take longer than that. That was my thought replaying Shenmue a couple of years ago.

Which reminds me, I wonder if they'll fix the progress-blocking bug in the harbour. That really is a must.

For newcomers to the series I've been playing Shenmue on almost a consistent yearly basis since release and I am still uncovering cutscenes I've never seen before.

Shenmue has that much level of detail put into it which is simply astounding.

Ahhh good as that's what I thought too, although I was stuck in a loop as I failed to trigger that last event many times. It wasn't till I came back to it a few months later did I complete that portion on my first attempt.

Basically, Shenmue 3 is going to be horrible because the team is comprised of people who make cell phone games and they're not talented enough to advance any of the gameplay. Also, the trailers suck. We're also stuck in the past, yearning for ancient gameplay; it'd be as dumb as wanting to play an old MMORPG with no modern features.

I think that's what that unintelligible post said. Poor attempt at sarcasm.

Lots of people angry that it's not coming to the Switch but I totally could understand why that has to be the case. Sega, Microsoft and Sony all hold rights to the Shenmue franchise with Sony recently supporting for Shenmue 3 and Microsoft having a deal since 2002 they all can have it on their systems. Nintendo is the odd one out with no deal taking place so it's not suprising to see it skip the platform. Technically it is very possible to see the games play on Switch but Nintendo didn't give in to any deal I guess.

Is it just me or this new trailer is quite underwhelming? I know work in progress etc, but still... They could've done way more? And I'm not talking about a full remake like Shadow of the Colossus of course. (even though I would've liked it more but I'm aware it's unreasonable)
Hope the final version of this HD port will be in 16:9 at least and with higher FPS or I'll be seriously disappointed (but still buy it lol)

I assume you mean Shenmue 3? No, sales of this game published by SEGA will not contribute to the funding of a game published by Deep Silver...
Ah, yes, I meant Shuenmue 3.

But when I was referring to (and I probably worded it badly) is that the publicity and people playing or getting hyped for these remasters would increase pre-orders for 3? I'm not too sure if they can fit those mechanics this far into development, though.

Another thought I had, I know we nothing of extras, but in terms of the Shenmue Passport and Online Leaderboards, I wonder if we will get anything?

I was proudly ranked 6th for the 70-man Fight and 20th for times on the Fork Lift Racing (in Europe) early after release. Then, of course, I dropped off the face of the earth after a few weeks of the game's release.

there should be at least ranking if they don't want to completely include all the passport stuff.
it doesn't really need that much of work to be done.

but still i hope they will include all the passport contents.

I know what you mean, but I think it's just the unfinished nature of the project. The game will look twice as polished when shadows and anti-aliasing are finalised. With the framerate, I'd expect a solid 30 (anything less would be a bit of an insult on modern hardware) but I believe 60 is out of the question due to how the engine works.

How long are each game?

Shenmue I, around 20 - 30 hours.
Shenmue II, around 30 - 40 hours. Just my estimates.

I have the original Shenmue on Dreamcast and don't recall enjoying it. Would I be able to enjoy the remastered version? Debating whether it's worth purchasing or not.

Kinda depends on how much you want to delve into the side stuff and collect things etc though
Main things only yeah it's probably around 15ish for first and 25ish for the second.

I hope it's a better port that the original Xbox's but assuming it's not and provides an enjoyable experience I'll almost certainly get it.

SEGA Japan gave no shit. SEGA Europe is behind the port.

I kind of figured as much when they brought in that SEGA Europe guy for the reveal. I got the impression that Shenmue isn't as big in Japan and that they felt like they had to justify to the Japanese fans why they picked Shenmue over another IP (while the same rules apparently doesn't apply regarding Sakura Wars which means next to nothing to fans outside of Japan - but like you said "SEGA Japan gave no shit" lol).

A sealed game is a sad game, play it! If you're gonna buy extras just to support the company like I will, at least let your friends have/borrow them or something to make it worth it lol. I plan on buying all three versions just to say I fully supported Shenmue like I have since the beginning...

Gotcha. I don't think the donations at this point will effect anything. It's too late into production to be making big changes. It is a nice was for new fans to basically preorder the game tho...

If you didn't enjoy it then, you likely won't enjoy it now. But it is worth a shot, go back and play the version you have and see how you feel...

Missed this bit on your post first time around so I'll answer now.

In the original, probably just the boat ticket quest. It's just a bit of a back and forth from Dobuita to the Hazuki Dojo. I see the forklifting job has been mentioned above, but I don't really agree. I found the forklifting pretty relaxing, but it's also broken up by the amount of fights and events the game throws at you during that part.

In Shenmue II, could be the books + chawan sign stuff? Maybe that's because there's only one way that quest resolves, even if there's actually a good handful of extra events that can be experienced in that time. I'm tempted to say Guilin too, but only when it hasn't been long since the last playthrough. Even then you can skip forward through a lot of it, and it's also the most soulful/mysterious/beautiful part of the game so...

In the case of either Shenmue game I stopped doing super quick playthroughs years ago. I like to take my time in both now, instead of going from main event to main event. I'm in no particular rush to get to any part of the game, so none of it particularly "drags" for me in the conventional sense.

Sony have absolutely no say in the franchise at all. The license Microsoft had for Shenmue II has ABSOLUTELY expired by this point or has no context beyond the original Xbox hardware. SEGA just figured Xbox One, PC and PlayStation 4 should take priority likely because a Nintendo Switch port would have been a lot more work. Also there is a chance Shenmue III might come to Xbox One (perhaps not at launch, but we will see) but there is much less chance for Shenmue III to be properly scaled back for Nintendo Switch.

I'd argue the worst part of Shenmue1(and the series in general) is the very beginning of disk 3. You start off heading out to the harbor to look for a job. The only actual clue of where to go(when the guy in warehouse 18 tells you about some kid also looking for a job by warehouse 15) doesn't get written down in your notebook... almost like it's not noteworthy?

Anyways, if you do remember to check it out, it better be before 12pm. If not, you'll be running around in circles all day and night trying to find a job in a place where people do nothing but tell you they aren't hiring. They do their best to discourage you from even trying lol. Then, the next day, when you FINALLY trigger the cutscene with Goro, he tells you to come back the next day at 12... like holy hell dude. That's enough to piss off even the most patient of gamers...

They've confirmed cinematics won't be in wide screen.

Well that's a shame... this seems like such a lazy port. I'll definitely play through it and platinum it just for the novelty, but I'll prolly stick with the Dreamcast games going forward from there. There just don't seem to be enough upgrades to justify making the switch for good. I hope I'm wrong though and this port blows me away and makes it hard to go back to DC version...

I need to stop obsessing over every screenshot...my mind won't rest until I see finished shots with proper shadows etc. Patience...

*I don't care about 4:3 cutscenes at all. It's how they were originally envisioned and composed. I don't think switching from 16:9 to 4:3 will bother me in the slightest.

The aspect ratio stuff is best left alone for the moment. It's a murky area without a definitive answer, so it might be prudent to wait for SEGA Europe or D3T to say something.

I think it's both premature and inaccurate to call this port lazy. Do you remember when people were clamouring for Blitworks' emulated wrapper version of Shenmue, and nothing more?

What we're getting now is built from the source code, with dual audio, a new control scheme, updated UI, and who knows what else right now.
