Lol. I know right? I swear it had the weird collision stuff occassionally on ramps from Sonic 4. I was in flying battery zone trying to roll off a ramp and it would just stop me dead for some reason before it hit the end. I had to stop playing because there was no way to build momentum up and fire off it easily due to that weird invisible thing I hit.

I wish someone had a complete playthrough for the audio. My God Hilltop zone was insane. The missing channels of audio made shit sound like it was played in minor keys some times.

Here's more

WTF IS THIS SHIT.

LIKE, HOW?

No, really, the 360 version were meh emulations and still it was way WAY better than this. Does Sega really wants to release their Mini with this?

To be fair thats the 2015 atgames system. The Flashback is still bad but not as bad as this. Watch the review above. It misses some stuff, but not merely as many channels and audio data as the 2015. Still bleh IMO if the console freezes, and has the problems listed. Good controllers though. Also found out it tries to ignore slowdown via frame skip on the flashback which can feel weird at times running its carts and that the flashback's cartridge functionality doesn't work with MOST peripherals if any. No 32x, cd, magic drice, etc etc etc.

Again though...we better hope its not just the flashback. Atgames dont have a good track record though. You've seen my experience lol. Dat audio.

I have a handheld genesis version of the atgames. Sound and music are pure dog shit. If this is based off the same thing then fuck it.

That's good.

I know the latest model started putting Master System/Game Gear games on as well. They could probably throw some 32x games on there as well and get to 80 games without needing the knock-off games to pad out the lineup. If Sega could be more aggressive in trying to get some third-party licenses (like the Konami games everyone's already mentioned) that would help as well.
I said this in the other thread, but it bears repeating. Sega needs to cut a deal with EA to get their games on this thing for a global release. Add Road Rash, Jungle Strike, Mutant League Football and the like. It'll sell even more.

Those older SOAC Genesis Flashbacks did have awful audio emulation and some other issues. But the current one on the market uses Orange Pi hardware. It really comes down to the emulation software here. If Sega's willing to use their own proprietary mobile emulator for this project, it could end up being much better than ATGames last offering.

"Sega's own emulator" could be anything, they have many options depending on the project, producer, which branch is spearheading production, etc.

The emulator doesn't necessarily do them much good if the implementation is shoddy, either--look at Sega Forever for a recent example of them flubbing a slam-dunk.

Yeah, I realize that. The Sega Forever emulation was horrible and not optimized to scale of phones. But in this case if they are working with fixed hardware like a Orange Pi, I'm sure they could get some decent optimization.

Again, the issue is "they"--I trust M2, I don't trust ATgames' engineers (who're allegedly still ripping off Genesis Plus GX), I don't trust the Vietnamese nobodies handling Sega Forever... in fact, I call into question the idea that ATgames has to be involved at all, save for some legal obligation to include them based on prior licensing arrangements. Just seeing their name attached kills whatever optimism I had for this thing.

RE: Sega Forever, I don't think it was a phone issue so much as some manager decided to force everything into a Unity wrapper thinking that'd future-proof them forever when all it does is add bloat and cause problems that needn't exist (and tank the reputation of the service, possibly killing its chances of every being ported anywhere... figures, huh?)

Oh right, I forgot that they used Unity wrappers on the Sega Forever ports. Just like the Genesis HUB emulator on Steam. It's like they threw the emulators up, tried them on a higher end phone, and never tested the apps anywhere else.

And by "they", I guess I mean Sega of Japan. This is their project, so I would imagine that they'd avoid using ATGames stolen Genesis Plus GX core just to avoid any future lawsuits. I would imagine that they would contract the emulator out to someone. But since they are targeting just one platform here, I think there is little chance that performance will be an issue.

Absolute garbage

Glad I have my Genesis still, need to get a backup soon. But, sadly, yet another missed opportunity from Sega.

I would have rather Sega just put a Raspberry Pi with a custom RetroPi theme on it with MegaDrive, Master System and Game Gear games on it.
Here you go then.
NBus3BN.jpg

Etsy is loaded with those and they got the Genesis case already. Some of these are just the case and you got to put a pi in it. You can buy those on etsy too. Want the NES classic UI? Yeah they got that too to download.

The emulation is not the best on the Pi when it comes to lag and just the feel of the gameplay. Though it does look amazing on an HD.

I would much rather prefer Sega did their own thing and equal or one up what Nintendo did (the classics emulation is also not perfect but it far superior to that of the Pi).

SEGA should have put in Mega CD games too and had the Model 1 Mega Drive and Mega CD set up for the mini. That setup, still looks so cool.

Wasn't Sega Forever itself just stolen Retroarch cores?

I said if before and I'll say it again, let me rebuild this:

Except let Sega CS3/Mechatronics and M2 make it.

The tweet seems to have disappeared but it looked to be ATGames announcing their involvement with the Mega Drive Mini.

ATGames are the company that makes the Sega Genesis Flashback consoles, the quality of which is underwhelming, to put it politely.

Thanks. That's a bit disappointing to hear.

We really need a Sega CD mini. Too many fabulous games stuck on that platform which haven't seen the light of day in years.

BTW, has any version of Ecco the Dolphin CD been released as a downloadable (i.e., Xbox 360, Steam), or has it only been the Genesis version?

Jokes aside I still have my Model 1 Mega Drive and Mega CD with Karaoke set up. There are so many good Mega CD games that should be included

or SEGA could go for the Multi Meda or better yet the Wondermega for the ultimate setup

AtGames WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK SEGA!!!!!

Hasn't AtGames done enough damage to the SEGA brand and yet again they use them once more, however is making this decision at SEGA needs to be demoted.

If i do get one it will be for the case only and will end up sticking a RPi in it with a nice Sega themed frontend!

This is an outdated opinion, the last few stable releases of RetroArch have reduced input lag tremendously and is now on par with using something like original hardware and a Framemeister

That's awesome.

I will have to fire mine up and try this out.

I did not mind the lag for SNES or Genny games but I could not stand it for NES games. I still like the SNES Classic better for the interface but there is no denying that the visuals are amazing on the Pi for these same games.

Damn it ATGames! What's the point?

I own one of their consoles and to be honest I'd rather not play the games at all than play on it.

The controllers are terrible. Mine use infa-red and only work it directly pointed at the console. The ui is utter crap, sound is embarrassing and emulation is broken at best.

I was desperate for a MD mini somewhere near the standards of the SNES counterpart. Unless there's a massive upturn in quality then ill not bother with this at all.

I wonder if Sega licensed AtGames the exclusive rights to mini consoles to AtGames, leaving Sega unable to cooperate with other companies or to develop this in-house until AtGames' contract lapses.

Ahahaha! I found a clip of the Hilltop zone from the Atgames genesis! Audio is so rank. BONUS Mystic Cave zone audio fail.

Out of curiosity I looked up a video of Sonic 2's Ending cutscene music played on the AtGames Genesis and I'm absolutely spent on how butchered the music is; it sounds like someone dumped a gallon of milk on the sound chip lmao

(video should start at 6:53)

Oh good lord.

I had honestly never heard this for myself. This is some bad shit.

They better get this sorted out for any future mini release if they want a product that's worth anyone's time. I heard the more recent AtGames models aren't as bad but still have problems.

Yup. Previous page I posted a review of "The Flashback" which is whats speculated to be this new mini. It shows the good and bad. Good...audio aint as bad as the 2015 stuff we're all posting. Bad...it still aint fixed entirely. Also bad...game and console freezing. Good...controllers were nice.

You get the drift. Go back a page and you'll find it near the bottom.

Will Sega ever stop re-releasing their 16-bit software for the thousandth time and actually start leveraging the metric fuckton of IP they're just sitting on for new games?

Nah, who am I kidding?

Just heard back from a Sega PR rep:

"For now Sega Mega Drive Mini is for Japan only and that was the focus of the announcement. Stay tuned for more news regarding the worldwide availability of the Genesis Mini.'

...which appears to be the first official hint of something called "Genesis Mini" actually existing.

Thing is they are still in the top 10 richest game companies list at $4.9 billion estimated net worth. They aint doin world changing stuff bu tthey definitely know how to draw in mass money it seems.
I'm with you though...I wish they could find a way to monetize all those delicious IP in todays market. Fact is the gaming market that once existed that allowed such experimentation and titles to flourish in profit simply does not exist now. AAA is bloated and its hard to stand out as AAA design requires cross market interest and elements of so many genres that many titles just blur into similarity with a checklist of the same stuff. Plus its all your eggs in one basket there. It either pulls in over the $100+ million to make or it could sink the studio that made it. Middleware dont really exist now as its crowded out of its markets by larger games. Small scale is hard to stand out in and free to play is hard to maintain monetized interest in.

Fact is Sega is like Capcom and Konami. All were specialists at arcade style game design, marketing and portfolios. They all did well with platformers and a few other specialized genres and over the years the exciting old school platforming, beat em ups, RPGs, and metroidvania stuff has fallen aside in the market as top draw genres. As such these companies have had to adapt. I don't expect they'll go backwards and try to revive an old genre with a new game that feels like older stuff anytime soon. Till someone has a new idea on game design for the older games I don't expect most old Sega franchises to have a chance at coming back with new titles.

Not unless retro gaming itself becomes a trend and starts moving hard numbers like mad. Me personally...I think they should invest in "makers" like Mario Maker. Sonic Maker, Streets of Rage...whatever. Sell dlc packs of gear/enemies/parts and release some stuff free or via playtime unlock with funbucks to monetize it and keep interests up. Probably the best shot we got right now of more of the old classic styles of play even if it'll lack a cohesive experience between players since we'd all be playing various stuff.
