I've only played some of FFVI, but Terra is one of the best female designs in the series. It's a pretty good place to start.

Thanks! <3 FE is probably my fav series and the Tellius games (9/10) are my favourite games ever! That sounds amazing, I will def try it! It seems like it's available for SNES, GBA and PSone...which is the best version to try??
PS1 has really long loading times, but other than that I guess it's just between if you like consoles or handhelds more! GBA also has a more accurate translation, but it's not too noticeable.

The PS1 version has some cool FMVs added to it but the load times are pretty slow so most say to avoid it, I think people recommend the GBA version the most, but the SNES version has it's pros too. I guess go with the one that is easiest for you to pick up out of those two.

It literally happens in-game. The sprite will twitch, usually grabbing its shoulders.

Lmfao ohhh, thanks for clarifying xD

Ooh, I just found a really neat project.
We are so proud to present our first collaborative project: THE GIRL GANG GIF CHALLENGE!

Over 50 women from all over the globe answered the call to create an animated gif inspired by their favorite fictional female, trans, or non-binary character.

My favorite is the D.VA one! (by Ena Kim)

I've still haven't played VI but every time I've seen Terra in any of the spinoff games (WoFF, Dissidia, etc.), she always comes as an incredibly boring character. Celes on the other hand was pretty awesome in World of FF.

Well, that's quite fitting, because Terra is rather boring in FFVI, but Celes is awesome in it. :)

I did not realize this thread was a thing until I saw it mentioned in the other thread (I just can't engage with threads like that anymore, takes too much out of me.)

Mobile FF6 is the definitive version. Don't @ me.

You're a monster.

And yes Celes is the best. I think with Terra they wanted to make her unsure of who she is but she just ends up lacking all personality.

This thread is scheduled to be spotlighted at some point.

The schedule is supposed to be, as I understand it, 2 threads per week...and REgal is like not very far down the list. *counts on fingers*

Erm. 15 weeks away.

Well.

If you know any other girls, PM them a link to the OT i guess. It can't hurt.

Um excuse me, this is her clothing expressing her personality, and it's all about the importance of the silhouette; how are you supposed to tell the female character apart from the male ones without massive jiggling tits and a playboy bunny pose?? Puhhhleeeze stop policing women's clothing choices (that were likely made by male designers). It's pretty much sexist to *not* take her seriously because of her clothing and body type! Wow, so much for body positivity! I guess the only people who *really* respect women are the otaku.

This was so entertaining to read. Thanks for the laughs XD

That thread has made me tired on so many levels.

I've been like that for a long time. I used to engage in those threads often (way before Anita became big), but I almost stopped afterwards. Not just because it's tiring to see the same comments, but also always being too late. By the time I read a thread fully, it's already old. The threads are so frequent and long, that I stopped following some of them.

I haven't played any Final Fantasy game, but I've been interested in the series for a while. Someone in that thread posted some of the female protagonists from FF6 and they looked really cool, have any of you played FF6? Is it worth trying, it will be my first FF. How is the writing?

This design is just too cool

latest

I've completed the game (GBA) and feel mixed about it. It is really impressive with the things that it has: many multiple party members, the way the last hours were handled, the amount of story for a snes game, music, content etc.

However, a lot of times I felt meh about it. One is the game being so easy, that it feels like routine going through the battles. FFV was more challenging and it engaged me more because of it. Another is probably my expectations being too high based on all the hype the game received prior to playing it.

I honestly can't tell if FFVI is a good entry point as a first FF game. It's difficult to recommend a first FF to start with because they're all so different. But maybe FFX could be a good FF game to start with if you enjoy pure turn based RPGs.

This is indeed adorable. I love this :3

Thanks for the input RpgN! I just can't get over how well designed the leading ladies are, it's so rare to have games starring women that are actually handled well, esp JRPGs, which happens to be one of my fav genres. I'm not sure how FF6 handles all that but I'm hearing great things and have been curious abt the series for a while.

I've heard that's one of the biggest problems with the GBA version, is that they made it too easy.

So, I know FF6 isn't the first to do it, but it really is the one for me where all of the characters started to feel same-y. I think of it has to do with the magic system, where everyone can learn every spell, and magic is far and away the most useful thing in the endgame (barring ridiculous things like X-Strike with Atma Weapon). It feels like, even though there are a lot more characters, your party setup doesn't really matter, unlike with, say, FF4, where every character is very distinct.

Persephone made a thread about sexualization in games, really well written, as per usual https://www.resetera.com/threads/why-women-criticise-sexualised-character-designs.4483/

I find a lot of the comments tiring and don't have the energy to debate this right now, but kudos to Pirate Bae, your posts were exactly what I wanted to say.

It's weird how straight men can't differentiate between objectification and sexualization and go to such absurd lengths to defend it, despite women constantly telling them that it's harmful and degrading. The number of posters who bring up "but women like to cosplay these sexy designs, you don't speak for all women"'in order to dismiss the OP....talk about missing the point. You can like a thing but also be critical of it.

I also find it annoying when they bring up examples of "sexualized" men? For me personally, I never viewed sexualized men and women equally because of the experiences of gender being different in regards to real world objectification and social context. Women are actually objectified in the real world to a wider degree where not a single woman I've met hasn't been harassed in some way by a dude. Men hardly, if ever experience this by a woman. Sexualizing women feeds into that societal problem, which largely doesn't exist for men to the same degree, so I never understood the comparisons. The guy who brought up romance novels seemed very tone deaf in that regard imo.

Why WOMEN criticize sexualised character design? <--- I thought this is a good self-explanatory thread title about why (some) women have issues with certain aspects of the rampant female figures sexualization in our media contents

Holy socks, how wrong was I

FF6 is anything but boring. I've played through numerous times in the last 23 years. I'm in the middle of one play through rn on the SNES classic.

But yeah, GBA or SNES is the way to go. None of the PS1 SNES ports are great. The load times are terrible. FF6 isn't as bad as the Chrono Trigger port but still not a great way to play.

This is why I avoided this thread. I just don't have the energy to engage these buffoons.

I don't either. :( Just reading the responses is so disheartening. Sometimes I feel like men would rather talk to each other about what women think than actually listen to any of us.

Terra Branford was my original internet screenname! Both Celes and Terra are wonderful characters, and VI is definitely worth your time. It definitely feels like a product of the SNES era, but that's not a bad thing at all. Also, if you like exploits, this is the RPG for you. There are so many tricks that make power-leveling a breeze.

I will say that while I love Amano's Terra design, I like her better with her green hair.

I didn't even bother to click into it. I know I'll just get angry. I'm always teetering between wanting to contribute to the conversation and have my voice head, and being too damn tired/afraid to share. It gets tiring constantly having to defend yourself, but I know I'm preaching to the choir here.

I should also probably get in on FF6. The only FFs I've played are V, VII, and Tactics Advance. Yes, I'm aware this is a ridiculous assortment that needs to be rectified.

Do you guys mind if I quote some of your posts saying you are avoiding the thread (I can remove the usernames), just to show the rest of ERA what it's like for women to read threads like these?

I would do that only to show that no, it's not just "4 radical fringe feminists on an internet forum" who are exasperated by this topic, by showing that many DO care but just can't be arsed to engage in further debate.

Put me down as someone agreeing with what MaskedNdi said.

Also, I'm fairly certain we're all considered fringe forum feminists, even though we are actually perfectly normal people.

I like this idea. I haven't posted about avoiding the thread, but I definitely hold the same thoughts as others in that it is just detrimental to my mental health to discuss it. It's just an endless circle of non-empathetic men shouting their biased opinions as to where they do not have the nerve to accept that they might be wrong.

I also tend to avoid posting in threads like that. They're always filled with guys trying to shut down the women talking about their issues with female representation in games while using other women as a shield. That thread is no different.

I'm fine with you quoting this and using it in the thread if you want to.

I didnt, but a mother of our kids bought a book preprinted where you could write down your recipes. Looked very lovely, with little advices on every page.

Also I think that hand written gives it a special note when it comes to recipe collections.

Like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1933494115/?tag=era0f0-20
Thanks for the link! I may check that out just for myself to pass on one day, but it probably wouldn't work for giving copies to my siblings. A handwritten one would be great tho- that's one of the things my grandmother left us and it's a wonderful keepsake.

My sister-in-law did one for all the family Christmas cookies that get made every year since the handwritten ones were getting worn out. She took a picture of the recipe card, and took a picture of the finished cookies on a nice plate and used Snapfish or Shutterfly to make books for all her siblings. She even put together a shopping list at the back for making each cookie.
I've used Shutterfly before to print photobooks and my digital scrapbook stuff, but didn't even think about it for a recipe book. I'll also need to check out snapfish. Thanks!

(also I know late replies are late but work has been super busy!)

edit- I also see I missed a FF6 topic! It's my absolute favorite game ever! As a kid, I really loved having two awesome female ladies in it (Terra and Celes). Such a great game!

If you notice, all the women have ditched the thread for the most part. Happens all the time, unfortunately.

I'm sorry you're basically left on your own there. I did go through and read your posts though and mostly agree with you. I think I would just distinguish between sexy vs. sexualised, in that sexy is fine, but 'sexualised' seems to imply to me that this has been done to her for the presumptive benefit of the viewer's sexual appetite. I think this distinction also expresses how things feel in real life; a woman puts on a slinky lbd and heels to go out and that's sexy – she may very well be on a girl's night out, wearing that for the company of other women. A woman puts on a bunny suit (or less) and heels at a gentleman's club and that's seedy, and conveys that this is a place for men. I think for many women, sexy isn't intimidating or frustrating, but sexualisation is. Sexy is something other straight women can admire. Probably controversial, but I make this distinction with cosplay too.

But anyway, for my own amusement, I counted the number of instances of the word "females" being used in that thread up till now. 39 TIMES. And this, as I found out, despite two women in the thread (Persephone and HyperFerret) asking people not to refer to women as "females" and telling them it's "dehumanising" and "degrading"! (And no, I didn't count the men who responded to them who were commenting on the meaning of "females"; I only counted the instances where it was used to talk about women's representation.) Even guys with the "right opinion" used it.

I mean, how can you expect guys to listen to what actual women here think when they can't even manage to talk about women in a way that doesn't make them sound like zoologists observing and bemusedly discussing with each other the irrational animalistic behaviour of a lower species. (But hey, they "love females", so how could it possibly be about showing hatred and disgust for women in the form of a lack of respect!)

I didn't even bother to click into it. I know I'll just get angry. You could express your opinion here if you like. You'll probably get differing opinions, but no attacking and denying.

Please go ahead. It's awful in there. I just went in, read a couple of posts and it's a depressing mess. And it's obvious there's no point in even engaging at all when I see the souls who are still willing to get in there being burdened with proving that sexual objectification is even problematic.

If it'll help, sure.

I'm pretty well convinced that the majority of men arguing against our interests are guys whose IRL prospects with women have been bad, and I don't think you can override that with internet interactions, but it's worth a shot.
