Shenmue 1 has tons of unique texture work, almost everything is unique. It is wonderful.
Maybe. Just looking at the screenshots it just does not 'click' for me. Don't get me wrong: I am not the person who needs 4K textures to have fun with a game. But the mix of 'ok' and 'ugly' on the screenshots is not really appealing for me. Maybe it's some work in progress and only half finished...

As a dreamcast owner who played Shenmue... its not a great game. Technically incredible for that time, but gameplay is simply bad. Story is boring and bland. Characters are forgettable. The recreation of the town is fastantic though.
But im happy that so many people willing to play this game will enjoy it on xbox, ps and pc.

To put this into context, this is the same price as the packaged Sonic Mania Plus.

Which is a steal.

Definitely picking this up now

99% Work in progress or bad pictures that's how a lot of japanese companies work sadly , little bit of resolution increase/nvidia supersample/Downsample and it would have looked much better easily, look at the pillars picture for example, way too many jaggies, final product will looks better easily

Also lack of any antialiasing..

Yep, low resolution picture to begin with when companies already post 1080p+Downsample pictures or full 4k

$15 a game. Ebay Dreamcast scalpers BTFO.

I wonder who the development team is that is working on it.
D3T. Did the 3D interface on the SEGA Genesis/Megadrive ports on PC/the new collection due to be released, along with a lot of tools support for games like The Witcher 3, general odd-jobs like updating renderers, etc. A solid workhorse choice, especially considering they have to delve into 20 year old code.

Im getting this on Xbox even though it won't be getting Shenmue 3. But the prospect of Xbox's BC program means that it will be playable on the Xbox platform across multiple hardware generations. And I'm getting this for PS4 even though I don't own one yet. I'll buy once a PS4 once Shenmue 3 is released to Kickstarter folks.

To you. I loved it at the time. Immense atmosphere and immersion in that world. The slow pace something quite different to most games and something someone like me loves. That's not bad gameplay at all, to me.

These games are 20 and 18 years old next year, respectively. Short of a total overhaul, the visuals are not going to change drastically.

The trailer did say WIP materials, however. I would not be surprised if stuff like texture filtering and anti-aliasing are included by the time the game releases.

However the game can still look very nice with just a simple res bump:

I wonder if the digital versions will have the option to buy them seperately? I know it's only $30, but I think I want to try the first game before putting down money for the second one.

Also, considering that it's limited to Steam...wouldn't it be better to use that in the title instead of "PC"?

I'm concerned. I feel like these games might just be one of those overhyped titles that I'm going to hate when I finally play. Not sure if I'm going to dip or not.

Well, you kind of have to keep in mind that it came out in 1999.

I was really hoping they would re-do the visuals, Dreamcast era graphics don't hold up much in 2018. Even most PS2 games don't.

This is super exciting! I've always wanted to play them but didn't really want to buy a retro Dreamcast and deal with that terrible cord-coming-out-the-wrong-way controller. I'll be all over this.

I think a lot of people that didn't play it at the time may be underwhelmed. The map is small, you spend a fair bit of time wandering and waiting and other mundane tasks. But when it released there was nothing at all like it. Loads of unique texture work, people had schedules, very little hand holding. I'm looking forward to revisiting it after so many years.

That's much better and something I can deal with. Maybe missing some "high(er) res" textures in comparison with the the OP, but the the picture is much more pleasant overall. Sometimes less is better.
I think all they really need are texture filtering options and anti-aliasing to smooth the look over a bit. My shots were only 3x internal resolution in DEMUL, so they're not super-super downsampled.

Actually the remaster already has an edge over the emulated versions, regardless of whether they keep improving or not. They've boosted the resolution (or remade) the skybox texture in the original Shenmue, and the Shenmue II footage/screens show they're splitting the difference between the Dreamcast and Xbox versions by using the improved textures minus the overdone bloom and motion blur.

Really important to remember the trailer is marked with "WIP" all the same.
