I see Sonic and Knuckles in that game list, but no Sonic 3, and no Sonic 3 and Knuckles...

I hope for something with Saturn and/or Dreamcast. This will mean that the chip will have to be way more powerful for a reasonable price and these will get hacked eventually either way. Then I can put more ROMs onto it and play also other games and systems down the line.

If the article that went up last Sunday in the Sankei Shimbun is to be believed, this is a repackaged ATGames SEGA GENESIS FLASHBACK.

https://www.sankei.com/economy/news/180408/ecn1804080004-n1.html

In an interview with COO Kenji Matsubara, it was stated at the time that "SEGA is exploring the idea of importing (to Japan) the officially licensed overseas Mega Drive remake "SEGA Genesis Flashback", which is currently produced in Taiwan under commission by SEGA for foreign markets".

So this thing:

Dream's over, guys

If the controller is the 6 button one and is as good as the original and USB I might have to get it for use with PC :o)

At least, I don't remember how that controller really was, but it looks near identical to the Saturn pad which I love so yeah.

Edit: oh, so it might be a repackaging of existing shoddy products. Meh, I hope that's proven wrong soon enough.

Oh god I really hope this is a new version and not a repacked version of that crap one.

If it's a new version and depending on games I'll buy it day one.

Also I clicked the link in the op and scrolled down....wtf is going on there

This was always going to be a version of the existing device for expanded markets. They even said as much last week but everyone just ignored the people who actually bothered to look up and translate the interview.

https://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20180408-00000008-san-bus_all

"We are considering importing and selling "Sega Genesis Flashback" for overseas of MegaDrive officially certified by Sega and outsourced to each country in Taiwan. The game machine was released last year. Built in game software, it is mainly sold in North America and Europe."

EDIT: Really hope I'm wrong on this though and it turns out to be a solid in house effort.

I thought this was just Sega licensing one of the existing third party devices for sale in Japan, not a new piece of Sega hardware ala SNES/NES mini

Super disappointing if this just turns out to be yet another release of the existing shitty ones.

I'd be far more excited for a proper Megadrive Mini than I was for the NES or SNES.

Even if this is a repackage of the Sega Genesis Flashback, I hope Sega will at least add a few more games, notably the Streets of Rage series.

Shame the sequel was terrible (and the remake even more so).

I kinda liked the focus on the jet in the sequel, made it more fast paced. But yeah the level design was subpar and the art terrible.

Then there's the SNES spin off that is closer to RKA1 but its bland as fuck (and slooow).

This makes me nostalgic for the Mega Drive Lion King game. My friends had it but i was a poor kid who just had a Master System.

So is basically this for japan?
mini-megadrive.jpg

Its a pice of shit btw, works really really bad.
Hard to tell currently, that previous statement by the COO suggests that it is, but the shell is very clearly different - it has a volume slider (unlike the Flashback), the reset button is a different shape, the power switch is recessed and the cartridge port looks like it might not be functional. It seems like a lot of work to create new moulds just to change a few bits of the design if they aren't making any internal changes.

Google trans says it's not the imported version?

I mean... Let's be real, guys. Sega's boss said like a week ago that they wanted to get back into the console business, or at least into the "Mini" console realm, it's the Mega Drive's 30th Year Anniversary, and they made a huge deal out of it. I HIGHLY doubt that all of that is just to announce that they're releasing an extremely poorly recieved replica in Japan. I really think this might be the real deal. Looks like Sega is finally starting to get their shit together and realising how many people still love them and their properties.

If this is a repackaged AT Games Genesis then consider my hype gone.

I'm hopeful we will get n64/saturn/Ps1 era consoles like Retron soon. Don't patents take like 20 years to expire? Idk.

I know all the patents have expired for the original DC CPU so that thing would be pennies to reproduce today

AtGames just confirmed that the Mega Drive Mini is powered by its "latest technology." They also said that "the same new and improved technology will find its way into the US and other territories later this year." They wouldn't tell me if it will be compatible with the original cartridges though. (I just wrote a news post about it: http://www.gameblog.fr/news/74717-mega-drive-mini-qui-la-produit-sortie-hors-du-japon-les-nouv)
The dream is dead then. :(

Back to Sega Ages Switch...

Ugh. I kept hoping maybe the other article was somehow not accurate and/or Sega changed their minds but... well...

If it was Sega developing the console with their parts I would be 100% down and insta-buy. At this point I'll wait for reviews.

So not quite the exact same unit that AtGames have on sale at the moment, but an updated version.
Given their track record I wouldn't have much (if any) hope of it having significantly improved emulation.
