Comparing the boss battles of a series where combat and bosses ARE the game vs. an action/adventure.

Real smart.

Everybody's on that God of War high right now so I think the poll is a little lopsided.

I personally enjoyed bombing the Helmasaur King's face in LttP quite a bit though.

If they're the Zelda bosses where you have to use your items to fight them, I prefer those. They're usually match the flow of the temple before it where you see some puzzles, get the item, do simple versions of puzzles, slightly escalate those puzzles with a different implementation, and finally the boss battle where you take everything you've learned. It becomes an extension of everything before it, but with an element of timing to it.

If they're the Zelda bosses where you just slash your sword a bunch, like most of the A Link to the Past bosses, then I prefer God of War's. God of War at least treats its bosses like an event, and has robuster combat mechanics to keep a fight itself more engaging. It also always caps things off with what can basically only be described as a Mortal Kombat-esque fatality, and like 'em or not, knowing they're coming and not knowing just what'll happen specifically adds a touch of mystery and anticipation.

And since some people are bringing Bloodborne up, I'd put that alongside of those Zelda slashy swordfights, all the way at the bottom. Not a fan of those. I see them as endurance test where the enemy has too much HP.

after youtubing, botw's aren't bad. Or I remember old zelda's being better.

thunderblight is good.
and boarding the divine beasts is the spectacle half

God of War easily

Zelda boss fights mostly go like this: find the boss weakness/gimmick > get 3 hits > you win. Boss fights is one of the worst parts about Zelda imo

Pretty much this, let's better compare what series has the better final bosses, 'Bayonetta' or 'God of War'.

Because in this way, we're comparing games with a similar approach in their designs.

GOW by some distance. They have the most epic boss fights in video games, and they're a bit more challenging than the very easy difficulty in most Zelda games. Gotta play BOTW and GOW PS4 to see how the new ones compare though :\

Are we going to get like 30 topics of GOW vs Zelda once the 20th comes as we breathe with excitement since the game is out in the wild?

Not really interested in voting, as I like each for different reasons. Now is like the worst time to make a poll if you really want an answer on this though. GoW hype is through the roof.

God of War. Show me a Zelda boss fight that even comes close to Poseidon.

So like, this is really weird. I've just taken a look at this 'boss fight'. It looks like a platforming segment with some standard 'attack the limbs' light combat at the end. Is this really the champion boss fight of the God of War series? People are joking, right?

I, personally, would argue that there are better sub-bosses in the Zelda series than what I've just seen, those being:

Lynel
Dark Link
King Bulbin
Darknut
Iron Knuckle
Igos Du Ikana

Let alone actual bosses, such as Majora, Ganon, Twinrova, Morpha, Odolwa, Goht, Koloktos and Dark Link (Zelda 2).

Ive honestly seen more Sony fans shit talking BotW than the other way around.

Honestly, as someone who has only owned a PS4 for much of this generation, I can really understand where Sony-only players have been pining for a good exclusive; as it happens, God of War 4 will be the first PS4 game that I've bought since...my god, Dark Souls 3? It really has been an awful generation, but I've got to say, I am REALLY excited for GOW4, especially as I've traditionally hated the series for its unlikable protagonist.

Still, there comes a time where you have to see bandwagoning for what it is. If this thread had been made two months ago, Zelda would have probably tripled the votes we see in GOW now. It really is no contest on the Zelda side.

Neither of these series are that great in the boss department.

Zelda bosses are piss easy and while they are entertaining and polished, they always revolve around a simple cycle where you utilize your latest gadget.
God of War bosses are spectacular in presentation, but more like interactive cut-scenes

The true hall of fame in boss fights has IP's like DMC, Souls and Platinum/Clover titles.

Visual spectacle wise it's no contest, but gameplaywise? Ehhh...Zelda I guess.

Nah they aren't lol. It's really a preference of visuals and presentation over what you're actually doing. Which is fine, but no my cup of tea.
Zelda's bosses are too easy but they are more varied when it comes to how to beat them.

I prefer Souls/BB bosses over both tbh.

Gow is usually a button mash followed by a qte. How you can that's better is beyond me.

For all of those smug Bloodborne/Dark Souls fans in here, let me just say that my boy Morpha would body any of those series' bosses, but especially Ornstein and Smough

Edit — Fucking Morpha

They very different but if I had to choose it would be God of War. The fights were epic in every sense of the word.

You must not have done the Champions Ballad
That one was an egregious boss battle.
What BOTW bosses haven't Is personality. I remember the mining kart boss battle in spirit traks, but i've to force myself to remember a distictive trait in a botw boss (excluding the Divine Beasts boss battle, they have a proper presentation and a distinctive fight)

I guess it depends which threads u browse, i have seen every single horizon thread devolve to zelda taking a massive shit on horizon from 30k ft. It unfortunate because both are totally different games.
The last few threads Horizon related i visited that went to shit started with people shittalking Zelda fans and the game, which led to the usual shit flinging.

God of War by a wide margin. The dungeon challenges are better in Zelda but the boss fights are cooler in God of War all day.

Definitely not BOTW. Man, the boss fights were the worst thing about the game.

I mostly prefer Zelda bosses, because they're essentially a culmination of the dungeon's puzzles. Usually a bit too easy, but a good "test" of the mechanics you learned throughout the dungeon. Since dungeons are the best part of Zelda (and, honestly, the "Zelda dungeon" as a mechanical trope is the best part of gaming) they're a fitting topper.

God of War bosses have more spectacle and obviously stand on their own, though. They're pretty much the point of the game, more than Zelda's, which are just a part of a larger system.

And so it begins..
I am waiting from some thread trying to justify that BOTW should also be GOTY 2018, as it is so good that 1 Goty its not enough.

Lets try not to compare BOTW with every game.

GoW's bosses are cool looking but besides a handful like Hades from GoW3, they're just average when it comes to gameplay. Zelda bosses have always been a massive joke to me with Skyward Sword being the only one with interesting mechanics. GoW wins this but stuff like Souls and Devil May Cry destroy both.

This... is actually hard.

I'm say GoW just by virtue of it's combat being better and the scale

But Zelda has some fucking awesome ones too. The one they just added to BotW in the DLC being the latest example

Yeah, Posiedon was never one of my favorite GoW bosses. III's later bosses all beat him pretty much.

Why the hell would you compare those two, they do very different things with their boss fights.

I haven't played much of either series, but I think God of War wins out for the sheer spectacle of its boss battles. The few Zelda games that I've played (original, LttP, Link's Awakening, BotW) had pretty annoying/underwhelming boss battles, as well.
