Variety has tapped veteran journalist Brian Crecente as its new video games editor.

In the new role, he will cover all aspects of the gaming industry for both print and online, contributing analytical features and trend stories, as well as breaking news. He will start at Variety on April 9 and will work out of the company's New York offices, reporting to co-editors-in-chief Andrew Wallenstein and Claudia Eller.

"Adding coverage of the booming video game sector to Variety's editorial mix represents another step forward in our effort to offer great journalism regarding every aspect of the modern media landscape," said Wallenstein and Eller. "As one of the most respected names on the video game beat for many years, Brian brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Variety that will complement our distinguished staff."

Crecente will continue to contribute periodically to Rolling Stone, where he most recently served as editorial director of the magazine's gaming vertical, Glixel, but his daily coverage of the industry will be exclusive to Variety.com. Both Variety and Rolling Stone are owned by Penske Media Corporation.

"I'm excited to help bring comprehensive video game coverage to such a respected magazine and website," said Crecente. "Variety has been covering the business and news of entertainment for more than 100 years. It's fantastic to see video games now receive the same level of attention as the other major forms of entertainment."

Prior to his stint at Rolling Stone's Glixel, Crecente was the executive editor at Vox Media's Polygon, which he helped launch in 2012. He also founded and ran Kotaku as its editor-in-chief from 2004 to 2012. He has written about video games since 2000 and prior to covering video games, Crecente worked at various newspapers around the country as an award-winning crime and public safety reporter.

Congrats.

So this is a promotion instead of an acquisition.

I don't think the way Variety covers media is well suited for typical games journalism.

Variety has anonymous sources you could rely on as factual reports.

Anonymous sources in the games industry is low tabloid quality that tmz wouldn't pay for.

I doubt Crecente has the upper level connections to deliver weekly news let alone daily.

How so? Jason Schrier pretty much relies on anonymous sources and his track record is as solid as they come.

You don't think Crecente has the sources? You're joking, right?

Congrats! Seems like he's been a wandering soul since his days at Kotaku. First Polygon, then Glixel, now Variety.

I has no idea he left Polygon. How long ago was that move?

A few months ago, to take over Rolling Stone's games stuff after John Davidson left there, but I guess this means Rolling Stone's games coverage is pretty much dead now? I never really saw anything they were doing over there crop up into the larger consciousness. Hopefully he has more luck at Variety.

And that's one guy. When you look at self ascribed games journalists as a group, tabloid quality. Most of them we have to second guess constantly.

Did I stutter?

Why do you keep referring to them as a group when this thread is referring to a specific hiring. If you think Crecente himself is questionable regarding sources then discuss that since he was the one hired at Variety.

Hey everyone (but MutantMagnet :/ :\ :<)

Thanks for the kind words. I think Variety's decision to expand to full-blown gaming coverage is fantastic. I start Monday. It may have been lost in the PR that went out, but I'll continue to oversee big semi-regular features for Rolling Stone, like my GLOBAL EXCLUSIVE ON MAGIC LEAP'S UNVEILING (coughMutantMagnetcough) :D :D

In terms of Glixel the brand. I believe it won't live on at Rolling Stone and it's not coming over to Variety. Social channels will maybe stay alive though.

Worth noting that PMC owns both Variety and Rolling Stone.

See you at PAX East?

First of all, congratulations on the new position!

You mentioned previously that you were working on some stories relating to the mechanics behind MTX and randomized monetization in gaming in previous threads. Are you still working on this story? If so will this appear as a feature in Rolling Stone or will it be a part of your coverage with Variety in the future? Regardless I'm really looking forward to reading it.

Came here expecting this, thank you sir.

Congrats Brian, I'm not actually a big follower of gaming journalism, but it seems you've been growing a lot in the business as far as I recall.

Also, really neat to see that Variety is gaining a Gaming section. I don't live in the US, so I don't really know how much relevant the magazine actually is, but it always seemed to me as one of the most traditional and respected publications when it comes to movies. It's great to see games earning even more cultural recognition.

Is John Davison physically incapable of staying put for more than a year or two

I don't immediately recall hearing about him since he left Kotaku years ago but he must have kept himself active in the industry and I'm probably just blanking on that.

Good job getting the variety gig and good news they're expanding their coverage of the medium.

We're seeing more mature voices associated with conventional journalism outlets - like Simon Parkin with guardian etc - in conjunction with better journalism from games outlets - like jschreier - who're offering critical analysis of games and interesting feature pieces without the hype and preview culture that used to be synonymous with games journalism. Glad to see your part of that movement, games journalism has come a long way and it's only up from here :)

Can I have my Kotaku star back, Brian?

Good on him. Always enjoyed his coverage. Always room for more quality journalism in the games space.
