It's crazy that we are still getting Vita games at all. The system has been "dead" for years.

BTW, is there a running list of officially announced Vita ports that have been cancelled or become vaporware? I know there's quite a few.

Off the top of my head...
Hand of Fate
Mercenary Kings
Ascension: Chronicles of the Godslayer
The Banner Saga
Hyper Light Drifter
2064 Read Only Memories
Poncho
Pier Solar
Zone of the Enders HD
Tales From the Boderlands
Galak-Z
Dungeon Defenders
Papers, Please

Man, imagine if Vita had been a hit...

Wait are these all confirmed? Cause damn I was still holding out hope for some of those.

We also have at least 2 more games. One should be announced this week or next in a near-final state.

Since we are on the subject of batteries...

My battery might as well be dead. If I unplug it from the cable and it turns a certain way it shuts off, even with full charge. The only way I can use it for extended periods of time is with it plugged in.

Yeah. Its so nice to still be getting retail releases (either normal or limited run releases) of various games. Plus I'm kinda thankful for my initial impulsive collecting on the Vita - I ended up buying so many titles that I decided going for a full collection was the way to go. Thanks to that idea I've ended up picking up and playing so many titles I might not of touched ordiarily and enjoying many of them tons (visual novels especially, such as Steins;Gate).
Plus its been a 2D fighters paradise for me. Between the controls on the handheld and many great ports of different fighters I've pretty much got the perfect portable for fighters, especially if you take the PSP releases as well into this.

Papers, Please is happening. The dev has confirmed as much and it got a rating in Australia.

2064 was said to have a positive outlook one week after being cancelled, so that's probably happening, too.
Great! Those were the two I was hoping for.

Actually I was also still holding out hope for Mercenary Kings, since I think a year ago they said they were still working on it. I can't say I'm surprised if it's officially canceled now, but still.

What happens when is does die? Do we have to play with it constantly plugged in?

Well if it's anything like my phone battery, first it starts with the charge not lasting as long you'll notice the battery drain in minutes vs hours. Eventually yes, the battery would fail to hold a charge. I don't think it's been tested but whether or not the Vita starts up after that probably depends on if it's solely connected to the battery or if when plugged in it also draws power from that like a laptop.

HotHamBoy Wasn't there also a canceled Bioshock for Vita? I used to have a list of games which were announced very early on but lost it a long time ago. Only like half those games ever came out though.

Thats depressing. Hopefully the Sony Switch Copy will use the same Vita cartridges and be BC.

lol of course 2K wouldn't comment. I dunno why it's so hard for the big AAA publishers just to be honest. After CoD and Killzone didn't do anything for Vita they all just kinda silently walked away and left it to the niche catering publishers.

Yeah :(. And the attitude doesn't seem to be all that uncommon either: put out a token effort, if things don't pan out then "oh well we tried" - never mind that the effort itself might not have been made in good faith. EA come to mind, putting Mass Effect 3 (but not 2 or 1) on Wii U, and putting out 3 titles for it, only to come along and call their partnership (at the Jan event this year) with Nintendo "unprecedented" and release 1 game for the system. Seems like they want others to take the risk while they sit back and only show up if they really have to.

"The biggest challenge here [is] Nintendo of America's approval requirements and desires," Wozniak said. "We have another game that contains a mature situation where two people talk about [it] in a very kind and patient way... the concept was not approved because they are not currently looking for mature titles."

My fears of the Switch realised and why I dig the Vita so much. I still expect some mature titles on Switch, but I think Nintendo are going to be pretty choosy about what's on their system once again.

Famitsu scored VA-11 HALL-A 8/8/9/9. Not that foreign reviews matter too much, given western reviews have been out for the PC version since release. Still, it'll be my first time with the game, so I avoided reviews thus far as much as possible to stay spoiler free. It's been crazy avoiding all the talk about the game for song long, but I've pretty much made it. Little under a week to go.

Vita goes out with a bang this year. Tokyo Tattoo Girls and VA-11 HALL-A on the same day no less.

I suspect Papers, Please will happen. 2064 devs seems optimistic too despite "officially" cancelling it.

I also suspect Mercenary Kings will happen now that Tribute Games are working with LRG on releases. That'll give them incentive to finish the project.

Announce this week? Huzzah.

In other news, even more Utawarerumono is coming, although unsure if for Vita:

I'm very late to the party on the Vita, but I picked up a slim from Japan recently (PCH-2000 ZA26 model) and I'm a little in love with it. I usually have a PC -> Xbone -> PS4 -> anything else order of priority so I'm really only picking up exclusives and PSP/one back catalogue for it at this stage, but I'm enjoying getting wrapped up in it before bed and on bad pain days. Just started playing Soul Sacrifice Delta, I really don't know what I'm doing yet but it's hard to put down.

Interesting to note that Nintendo of Japan welcomes more mature games like Gal Gun, but Nintendo of America is a little bit more conservative going by what Ouren is saying.

I am kinda surprised things like Gal Gun 2 will be on Nintendo's system. Vita got a pretty awkward reputation as an anime/waifu system. It wouldn't be much of a problem in Japan as they are more used to that kind of thing but maybe in America it's not what they're after and things like Doom, Wolf II are titles that would sell more for sure.

heads up for those that pre-ordered count lucanor on shopto, they're cancelling pre-orders because they're not getting stock of the game on vita so i guess it's back to square 1 of getting it from signature games now

base listing has also gone but i have no idea if they're cancelling orders or not

A proper Vita thread! Woo hoo!

I've just noticed that Mutant Mudds Deluxe has been available for a while on PS4 and in europe too. Although the only way to get it is to buy the whole package, which doesn't even appear to be crossbuy(unlike the standalone sequel)

A guy on the LimitedRunGames forum contacted Signature Games & got this reply.

"Thanks you for reaching out. First, please rest assured that the game is still being released. The mail you've received from 365 may have been a little misleading. What might have made more sense is 'this title is no longer coming to the 365 store'. However, the WILL be releasing directly through the Signature Edition page. Whilst we have no official release date to confirm quite yet, please follow us on social media for updates."

So I've had Pox Nora on my PS4 for ages but I never bothered to actually play it.

I saw it was on Vita now and figured it might be a cool game to have on there and finally fired it up.

Holy shit, why did they even bother?

First of all, the text is microscopic. Smallest I've ever seen on Vita, worse than Darkest Dungeon.

Second, all the assets are compressed to hell and back and everything is so tiny.

Finally, game is sluggish as fuck.

Maybe this is a serviceable port if you are already familiar with the game and want to be able to play on the go but I don't know, man...

Hey, speaking of ports.

What one indie game would you like to see ported to Vita that hasn't been and isn't announced to be?

I would love to see Death Road to Canada.

What ports have surprised you the most?

I personally never thought Skullgirls would come to Vita, that's really neat. Undertale also just seemed really left field.

Probably the most surprising was XCOM, though. I have mixed feelings about it. By all accounts it's the worst version of the game but I think it's super rad that it's on Vita in any form.

Oh man, there are too many to list, but if I had to pick one, it'd probably be Torchlight. Like, I can't believe the best Diablo-like game we got was Dungeon Hunter. Anyways, that's number 1, but I also would have loved to see stuff like Stardew Valley (dev is still fucking dangling it in front of us), Reccetear, Shellshock Live, Inside and This War of Mine. Lots of under-represented genres on the Vita that I feel indie games could've filled better.

Most surprising port was definitely Undertale for me. Didn't see that coming at all, and it was a very pleasant surprise.

At this point I've just added Stardew Valley to my Switch wishlist. I've actually got a few games I'm waiting to buy for when I get a Switch since I'll need things to play between the big releases.

As a big fan of handheld gaming there are still certain games I will want to play on Vita over Switch, though. Basically anything that controls better with a proper D-Pad. The lack of a D-Pad really breaks my balls, especially as a fighting game fan. I prefer an arcade stick but a D-Pad is the only other acceptable option. Vita was a huge dream come true as a fighting game fan. Amazing D-Pad, console-parity ports (for some games) and proper online.

Kind of mad that Vita isn't getting TBOI Afterbirth, though, since that's where I've been playing Rebirth.

Okay, here's another question: if you could change one thing about the Vita's input options what would it be?

First things that come to mind to me are the mushy shoulder buttons and the lack of R2/L2 but honestly, of I could just pick one thing it would be the addition of R3/L3. I just want to click down on those sticks so bad. I was trying to remote play Alienation the other day and you can do it but it really sucks. There's a damn good reason that reload is default mapped to R3.

I'd go with Stardew Valley as well. It really seems like a perfect fit for the system. Hopefully it'll come to pass, and sooner rather than later.

Yeah, I ended up buying Stardew Valley on the Swich, and despite it's MANY faults, it was still a very good game. Seems pretty replayable, so I would still insta-buy a Vita version.

Take out that useless back touchpad and add in R triggers like what the Switch has. Edit: I guess that's 2 things. Just add in the R triggers.

Death Road to Canada is a good shout. I've been bugging them on Twitter for a Vita version for a while and they've seemed sort of interested but never done anything to act upon it. It's a real shame, but at this point if they came to consoles I'd imagine it'll be Switch.

I've had a few dream indie ports for a few years now - Undertale (finally happened!); Stardew Valley (seems like it might happen) and Transistor (never going to happen). I'd add Katana Zero to that list, which isn't out yet but looks absolutely mind-blowing in the same way that Hotline Miami blew me away all those years back.

What ports have surprised you the most?

I personally never thought Skullgirls would come to Vita, that's really neat. Undertale also just seemed really left field.

All three of 2016's "AAA" titles were surprising to me. Civ Rev 2 came out of nowhere; as did XCOM really. And I never thought we'd get an Assassin's Creed game by that point in Vita's life, even if it was a spinoff.

To be fair, 2016 had a fair few surprises. I never thought we'd get Wanted Corp of all games, lol.

I haven't played all of Gal Gun on Vita, but from what I did play, none of it was really M rated. What was mainly disappointing about the game is the horrible framerate. Vita should have been capable of performing much smoother.

Well, it was using Unreal Engine which probably wasn't optimized all that well for Vita. With that I can see why the sequel is easily hitting Switch.

Doesn't really take much to see how it could be rated M, considering the 2 main girls have extremely suggestive events in their routes. Even if you don't consider the main gameplay to be worth the rating, the several events during each route definitely are.

With that said, the framerate is awful and it's what caused me to shelf the game. Would have liked to see more routes than just the main 2, but I couldn't stand how slow it ran at times, especially since it affected the controls.

Definitely get rid of the rear touchpad. Even in the few games that use it. I've never found it to be accurate or very good at working in general. Just clunky at best.

Plus it just serves as another fingerprint magnet thanks to the gloss.

Agreed, I haven't played a single game that utilized the rear touchpad, and there are enough fingerprints on my display screen.

As Kresnik said, it was mindblowing to see XCOM, Civ and AC land on Vita in 2016. But Geometry Wars 3...I wanted a Vita version so much but I thought it was 100% impossible because Activision. And yet...it was even a freebie on its launch month.
Also Steamworld Dig 2 was quite a surprise.

Anyone made the move from a Slim to and OLED and wish they hadn't? Still got my Slim and play it occasionally but always hearing about how much people love the OLED version. If it's been a good move for most I might look at selling my Slim and trying to get hold of an OLED cheap.

I've got 2 OLEDs and 4 slims myself (don't ask, I'm a nutcase).
And I couldn't trade in a slim to get an OLED model. Sure the screen is quite nice but it's not perfect.
I actually prefer playing on my slim models over the OLED ones as they feel quite a bit better, weigh less, have slightly better battery life and don't even see much of a difference when it comes to screen quality besides the slim not looking oversaturated like the OLEDs do.
