Wasn't this playable at PAX? How is it that we have no footage yet? Hopefully someone will put up some gameplay soon. Want to check out the animation :)

Here's some offscreen footage. It looks like the same old demo but with the new character designs. Maybe that's why nobody got footage of it? I don't know. I'm certainly interested in seeing more of it.

Sorry guys, the lack of footage is our fault! We didn't want any recorded material this time as we're not 100% finished yet and didn't want to have last minute beta footage on the internet before releasing final material in an upcoming trailer. Please look forward to it! The PAX demo was very short, just the beach (with limitations e.g. some closed areas that are currently in construction.)

Umh, I noticed just now that the character design is a bit different than the Dragon's Trap.
Different team, different project altogether.

Long story short:
Dragon Trap is a wonder boy 3 remake.

Monster Boy is a spiritual successor to the later entries in collaboration with the series creator.

Of course I had to fix this icon too. Pepelogoo = more sales.

Hope this game isn't long for the sake of being long. I like my 2D platformers rather short and awesome than stretched and boring.

It looks great tho. The only thing I don't like is the fact that there is retail version for the US but none for Europe.

The woodland screenshot is just stunning. Just absolutely - strikingly - beautiful. I know they delayed the game to re-do all the art and it looks like the extra effort paid off.

This is light years beyond the initial screens they showed in 2015. If this is coming to consoles well before Steam, I might even get a console for this.

Thank you everyone! Glad you like what you see so far!

I'm a big Switch fan myself, Monster Boy is a fantastic fit for this console! Looks amazing on the Switch screen and runs beautifully in native resolutions.

So Thomas, I was wondering. Are there any differences in terms of resolution and other technical stuff between the Switch version and PS4/PS4 Pro? I've had the PS4 version pre-ordered/paid off, but I could see myself changing to the Switch version if they were both 100% the same on my 4k TV.

edit: Somehow thought I was quoting something from the last page. But nonetheless, what I quoted is relevant to my question so I'll stick to it.

Hi Kyolux,
all console versions will look very similar at launch but at this time I can't 100% guarantee zero visual differences as we use a slightly different texture compression on Switch.

You know, when Monster Boy was first announced, it honestly looked, for lack of a better word, cheap. I know it wasn't cheap, because games aren't cheap. But you could clearly see the limitations of the budget in the artwork. This art didn't look like it went through an insane number of revisions. I didn't care at all, because it was more Wonder Boy, but looking back I can definitely admit that. However...

This game does not look cheap anymore. In any way.

No Xbox One physical version? If not looks like I might have to skip this game.
Well, I think it all depends on the reception of the game when it's out. If it gets a high metascore and a decent amount of sales, the chance for a physical copy on Xbox is higher. It's not happening for launch because right now we already have a 20:1 pre-order ratio Switch vs. PS4. I'd expect a low amount of physical pre-orders for Xbox One given the lower hardware install base compared to PS4. And yet - Xbox has a minimum order quantity for discs that's higher than PS4. I also recommend everyone who's interested in physical copies to pre-order the Switch or PS4 version rather sooner than later as it could sell out rather quickly and a reprint is not guaranteed.

Thanks a lot! Yes, we improved the graphics tremendously but it's not only a visual treat. The variety and gameplay ideas that we included in this game is insane. If you look at all material ever released on this game you didn't see more than 5% of the content that we packed into it. It's huge.

MS demands higher minimum print runs for physical releases which means they're not feasible for the vast majority of indie games. It's not as if all these indies skip XB1 out of prejudice, they're just forced to make practical decisions with limited resources.

It's got big shoes to fill, so that sounds perfect

I've mostly just lurked when it comes to this game and thread (really looking forward to the game!), but I just want to give a big shout-out to you doing a fantastic job at communicating things, Kern.

Oh boy can't wait to finally play this. Right in time for my summer holiday too, this and Octopath Traveler will get loads of playtime during that time. I'm really glad the game looks better than it used to so good job on improving that and not being content with how it was.

This just keeps looking better and better. Such a shame no physical EU release seems to be in the works. Hope it can still happen eventually.

Thanks for the info. I'll stick to my PS4 copy then. Especially since those are less in demand, I don't want you guys to feel like it was completely for naught to print them!

PS4 preorder is now in. Looking forward to when this releases.

I still wish that this game looked like the Dragon's Trap Remake. That game looks like a Calvin and Hobbes strip in action.

I'll admit I didn't like the way this game looked when it was revealed, but the new visuals mimic the stylised, boldly-coloured Sega games much better. Looking forward to playing it.

Is there any price discrepancy between the digital and physical versions on Switch?

Thanks for the reminder that the physical version may have a limited print run. I grabbed this for my Switch.

Looking forward to playing this.

Still no plans for a EU retail release?

I hope this doesn't mean it's a 20h slog filled with... well, filler content. Can we skip dialogue/cutscenes in the game?
