All credit to Kurita for introducing me and many others to Japanese dramas on another forum. His original OP is quoted in part below, including some of his original recommendations.

This thread is a work in progress and I will edit in more details about dramas and please submit recommendations of your faves and we'll get them added in here!

Credit also to Ryuukan for creating some of the content in this OP!

Japanese television dramas are live action shows broadcasted (or on video on demand) in Japan that fall under a number of different genres, romance, comedy, mystery, period and more.

Thread considerations:
  1. Please avoid any links or discussion of illicit streaming/file distribution
  2. This thread is for Japanese dramas. Please make a new thread if you wish to discuss dramas from other countries.
  3. Please keep Japanese live action film discussion limited to films relevant to the thread. For example, a film that concludes a drama or a film that is based on the same source media as a drama.

Quoth Kurita:

Let's talk about Japanese Dramas!
Hi everybody...
For my first thread I decided to talk about Japanese dramas (or doramas).
Drama is the name given to Japanese live action series. They can be original creation or adaptation of novels, mangas, animes...
Some people avoid them mostly because of the "unique" Japanese acting which is often considered to be bad. Of course, there are bad actors but hey, even western shows are plagued with bad actors.
Obviously, the acting is quite different from what you'd see in a show like Breaking Bad, but if you can bypass this barrier you could discover plenty of fantastic series!

Kurita's Drama Recommendations

The story revolves around Take Seiji, who quits his job after three months. With no dreams, no savings, and a poor relationship with his family, he becomes a hikikomori. However, after his mother falls ill with depression, he ends up having to take on a part-time job at a construction site. Because of that, he soon decides to work towards rebuilding his life: "Even though I'm just a freeter, I'm going to buy a house for the sake of my family." One of the people he meets at the construction site is Chiba Manami, who graduated from a top-class university and joined a well-known general contracting firm. Manami is the complete opposite of Seiji. But while their personalities clash at first, they gradually come to understand each other.

Easily one of my favourite dramas it was one of the first dramas I watched actually! Lots of emotional moments, a real tear-jerker.
You're gonna laugh, cry, smile. Kazunari Ninomiya shines as Seiji, the eternal part-timer aiming to help his mother. Relatable characters and situations, great actors, definitely a must watch.

Rich Man, Poor Woman
Oguri Shun plays Hyuga Toru, an affluent man whose personality is on the contrary, speckled with flaws. A CEO of an IT firm who is published on Forbes as a billionaire, Toru attained his fortune through chance and pure luck. A woman who meets Toru and eventually becomes attracted to him is Sawaki Chihiro, played by Ishihara Satomi. Chihiro is a hardworking college student at Tokyo University who has prepared for her future as much as she possibly could through studies and obtaining licenses. Despite her efforts, she has yet to land a job. Upon meeting Toru, she begins to unravel a genuine pureness inside him and solitude resulting from such pureness, which eventually draws her closer to him. The two repeatedly conflict each other, but little by little learn about one another to grow and develop together.
Despite the worldwide recession and financial difficulties, there are people like Mark Zuckerberg who began work from merely an apartment room or a garage that end up growing to be companies generating over ten billion dollars revenues after merely 10 years or so, embracing their new found wealth by living the dream life. Whether it's a game or application software, Ecommerce, or other IT related firm, there are more than a few who rose in fame to such status in recent years. On the other hand, Japan's unemployment rate for new grads dropped to a record low and those who want to work are unable to, or their wishes to work at their company of choice is not granted.
A Cinderella story of the real world. Will the two be able to compromise their values and lifestyles to become a happy couple?

A interesting premise, with bits reminding of The Social Network. The rise and fall (and rise) of an egocentric but loveable bilionaire turns out to be a touching story. One of Oguri Shun's best roles. Another drama with a great soundtrack...

Saikou No Rikon
The story begins with a husband and wife caught in the middle of their usual round of bickering and bantering. They cannot come to understand the other's personality or actions as they constantly fight on a regular basis...but despite that, they could not, however, come to part their ways. But one day, after an incident occurs the wife informs the husband that she had "submitted the divorce papers." The former husband and wife, or rather strangers to each other now, somehow end up continuing to live together under one roof...On the other hand, another couple has discovered a "hidden shocking truth." Their marriage seemed to be a happy one but was it really!? What does "marriage" mean? What does it mean to be a "husband and wife"? Watch closely as these two couples become lost in an indescribable complicated relationship, developing in between marriage and divorce. It's the life-sized love comedy you've been waiting for.

A light-hearted story about marriage and divorce. It's pretty straight-forward but really enjoyable thanks to Eita's great performance as the socially awkward main character doing his best to save his ex-girlfriend's marriage, even though he's divorced!

Mother
Matsuyuki plays the part of Nao Suzuhara, an elementary school teacher. When she realizes that one of the female students is receiving abuse from her mother, Nao's maternal instincts kick in, and she impulsively decides to bring the girl into her own care. Serving as a substitute mother, Nao takes the child on a trip from Hokkaido to Tokyo, and the two experience various events together along the way.

I hope you're ready to get depressed. Full of angst, I promise you that you'll hardly smile watching this drama. Believe or not, the child actor manages to be pretty good and touching! Despite disliking children, Nao does her best to live with the little girl and it turns out to be a beautiful story.

Resettler Recommendations

Ryuukan's Yuji Sakamoto Corner

Why does Sakamoto get his own mention?
Yuji Sakamoto is a screenwriter who has created some of the most moving and emotional Japanese dramas out there. His shows deserve the recognition beyond others. Here are what I believe are his best works:

Mother (2010)
NX4q0nU.jpg

About a woman, Nao Suzuhara (played by Yasuko Matsuyuki), who is an elementary school teacher only because she is unable to work in the research field she studied in college and doesn't really care for children. A child (played by Mana Ashida) in her class was being heavily abused to the point of being left outside in a trash bag while the mom and boyfriend went to party. Nao decides to assume the role of the child's mother. This is an unbelievably emotional family drama that focuses exclusively on women.

Soredemo, Ikite Yuku (2011)
F5ZoE2F.jpg

Hiroki Fukami's (played by Eita) younger sister was murdered by a friend of his as a child. At the present, Futaba Toyama, (played by Hikari Mitsushima) the younger sister of the killer, has suffered all her life due to her brother's crime. There is no mystery here, this drama is about how these two devastated families have coped with what happened and what they do to keep on living. This is a very unusual plot done extremely well with top-notch acting.

Woman (2013)
n4714r4.jpg

Koharu Aoyagi (played by Hikari Mitsushima) is a single mother of two who is struggling to make ends meet after the accidental death of her husband (played by Shun Oguri). She applies for welfare and is denied because of complications with her mother's involvement. They have been estranged from each other since 20 years ago when Koharu's mother left her father for another man. The difficulties Koharu and her children face coupled with the interaction with her mother and her family make for the most gripping drama I have ever watched. This show broke my heart over and over and and I loved every minute of it.

Mondai no Aru Restaurant (2015)
hSksxyK.jpg

Tamako Tanaka (played by Yoko Maki) decides to start a bistro with a group of acquaintances who all have one thing in common, they've all been put down or screwed over by men. Please don't write this off as a "man-hating" show, its much much deeper than that. Its more about addressing gender inequality in Japan through issues a lot of women there can likely relate to. Even though there are some serious moments of sexual harassment and abuse, this show is largely a comedy and throughly well done.

BTW, the subtitle is a pun on いつかこの恋を思い出してきっと泣いて, written by Sakamoto Yuji, known to some of us as the good of J-dramas. He also wrote Saikou no Rikon and Mother mentioned in the OP. The show written in hiragana above is literally translated to "someday when we remember this love we will surely cry." Its English title is Love That Makes You Cry. It's a super sweet, emotional and very real feeling slice of life drama.

Here's the description from the D-Addicts Wiki:

Itsu_koi_.jpg

"Love That Makes You Cry" follows the story of love, friendship and growth of six young men and women who move from countryside to the big city of Tokyo, each with their own dreams and aspirations. Among them is Sugihara Oto and Soda Ren. After her mother died, Oto was raised by adoptive parents in Hokkaido. Although she has given up on having any high hopes or big dreams for her future, she still remains positive and faces life with optimistic attitude. One day, she finds out the fact that her adoptive parents are planning to marry her to the wealthy man in town in order to solve their financial debt. Soda Ren was raised by his grandfather in Fukushima. Ren works hard on one job after another in order to earn the money to buy back his grandfather's land so that they can start farming again. By chance, Oto and Ren meet in Hokkaido and they decide to move to Tokyo to find new life to change their fate and future. However, as soon as they arrive Tokyo, they get separated in the crowds... -- Fuji TV

Some recent popular dramas:

999-j-drama.png

99.9, a very fun and zippily-paced lawyer drama with Matsumoto Jun. It's getting a second season early next year.

Nigeruwa-hajidaga-yakunitatsu-j-drama.png

400px-Okitegami_Kyoko_main.jpg

Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu, aka We Married as a Job, a solid Aragaki Yui and Hoshino Gen vehicle off-beat romcom kinda deal. Personally preferred Okitegami from the same writer - also stars Yui and is an unusual and delightful story of a PI who wakes up every day with no memory.

tenno-no-ryouriban-2015-japanese-drama.png

We haven't yet watched Tenno no Ryouriban but I was just thinking about this show last night as it is from the writer of the magnificent time travel medical series Jin (which we recently wrapped and really loved for the most part). This show was a 2015 ratings hit.

i-am-home-japanese-drama-2015.png

I'm Home is a Kimutaku vehicle and a pretty solid mystery show. It's a remake I believe. It was a fun ride.

zeni-no-sensou-japanese-drama-2015.png

Zeni no Sensou features stellar performances from Tsuyoshi and Watabae and is a very enjoyable revenge story.

380px-Kahogo_no_Kahoko.jpg

Kahogo no Kahoko features Takahata Mitsuki (amazingly different from her role in Love That Makes You Cry) as an overprotected young woman, deeply reliant on her parents for every minor decision, especially her mother (played by Kuroki Hitomi excellently). She meets a young man who tells her she represents everything that is wrong with Japanese youth, and begins to open her eyes to her surroundings. It was a really sweet and enjoyable series.

Haven't watched dramas in a while actually. I think Tokyo Tarareba Musume was the last one actually. Need to find something.
Glad that max and Ryuukan are keeping drama thread alive, I'm by no means the king of J-Dramas so thanks for doing so haha

thanks for the recommendations folks. I think I'll start with Nigehaji.

It's a lot of fun, I think you'll dig it. The song is super catchy too. Hoshino Gen is really talented. (If you enjoy it definitely try Okitegami too!)

And I'll gladly second Ryuukan's recommendation for Quartet, it was a really engaging and unusual show, with stellar acting.

Good to have access to this back, and good timing too. Recently going thru Netflix's Jdrama repertoire. Good Morning Call, Million Yen Women, Atelier. Now just super craving S2 for Good Morning Call... But thankfully I have Terrace House to keep me busy.

How do you like GMC? I was thinking of checking that one out. (Terrace House is amazing though, esp. BGITC. I'm psyched to check out BAGND now that it's being fansubbed.)

I love it! Its light and comedic, with just the right amount of melodrama IMO. Great chemistry and lovable cast of friends for the protag and her love interest. It made me think back to how overly dramatic Hana Yori Dango was years ago. (Rightfully so) But nowadays I enjoy something less heavy while still being substantial.

Re: Terrace House, we should have an OT for it something. I'm still in the middle of "In the City" But I plan to dig into "Next Door" before going into "Aloha State". Good lord is it a chill and addicting watch though. Also. HANSAN THE BEST. Literally.

Thanks very much for the GMC rec! Looking forward to checking it out then. I bet you'd really be into Kahogo btw.

Hansan, yes. He really is THE BEST. I have to say Arman grew on me a lot. Agh...so much to say about BGITC but I don't want to spoil you. Enjoy it. Aloha State isn't as good but it's still very watchable in a lot of parts. The commentators are a big part of the enjoyment. I need to watch BAGND next.

No derailing detected, I am always game to talk TH. I hope in that thread you will also draw attention to the BAGND fansubs!

If anyone is interested, not me since I have a general aversion to medical shows, Amazon Prime is simulcasting season 5 of Doctor-X

I love medical shows but I heard D-X isn't very good. Anyone here seen it? And thanks Ryuukan!

Ok. The first episode was really good. I've missed the bizzare premises of japanese drama series.
I like Yui's character Mikuri. Very symphatetic and I can relate to in some ways, but she sure looks different with short hair.

Yes, the bizarre premises are so intriguing to me in J-dramas! What else did you say you've seen You in? We first saw her in Zenkai Girl which is still a fave.
BTW, that was the main actor singing the song at the end if you didn't catch it. That dance at the end was a huge sensation in Japan last year online. (I prefer the Marumo dance haha.)

Hansan nailed it completely even on Arman. "You shouldn't be a Fireman, be happy"

And although I was spoiled because I saw the pic of Armans comment back on the old forum, it was a good way to point out how good of a person he is. The whole "Thank you for spending your only free time with me". But really, has there ever been someone so perfect, Good looking, well spoken, smart, mediator. and on and on and on. The show even had a silent moment for him afterwards. I am dreading Aloha State, I'm hearing the additions of Americans ruined it.

I'll check out Kahogo next! Thanks for the rec.

Glad to see this thread is alive and folks made it over :)

Watched the first episode of Hello Harinezumi with a friend last week. Strong first episode, and I appreciated that the show seemed to address every question we had, as we were bringing them up! Could do without protag being so gropey, though.

Been waiting to see if Akagi S2 or Prison Hotel get subs, but nothing so far. Akagi in particular feels like it's airing without comment, haven't heard a peep about it!

that baseball drama with greeeen ost.

Rookies is still GOAT.

Glad to see a jdrama thread here :)
I'm soooooooo far behind on watching new stuff, I can't even remember if I've watched any 2017 shows T_T. If anyone wants to recommend some good ones from this year, go ahead. Genre doesn't matter, I'll watch pretty much whatever.

Also, I feel like I need to mention that If anyone here hasn't watched いつかこの恋を思い出してきっと泣いて mentioned in the first post, it definitely deserves a big recommendation from me. That show still sticks out in my mind

Amazon being late with my copy of Mario means I had time to binge Negihaji. Up to Episode 7 at the moment.
Really lovin it so far. I just wish Numata has more screen time.

Edit: oh, and the ending song is now stuck in my head. Not sure about the dance though.

While on the search for light hearted dramas on Japanese Netflix after ingesting both seasons of Good Morning Call I came across Moteki. I think it might be quite popular? After the first episode it feels mostly weird, but maybe it'll get more interesting later.
Tried watching "Around 30 Chan", but the first episode was so bad, that I don't think I'm going to continue.

Moteki is such a great drama, one of my favorite shows. Great use of licensed music, just a blast to watch. The original manga is alright, but the drama is way better.
Late night dramas can be some real gems.

Finished Cecile's Plot last night, a typical fashion world drama but with a strong shounen manga vibe of "I want to be king of the magazine models". Its kinda weird seeing Yoko Maki act like Naruto or Luffy when she's playing a 30-something mom. The show never gets too serious beyond some passive aggressive confrontations. If you love mature Japanese actresses, this is the show for you. (3/5 emoji thumbs up)

Ok I give in, with Kurita repping Moteki, I need to bump it up to the front of the queue.

I'm not repping anything yet, barely started watching myself!
Currently 4 episodes in and wow, the protagonist is hands down the worst character I've seen in a drama in a really long time. I hope it gets better later.

It's all good! Also, sad to hear, but I guess I'll watch it until the end.

If anyone is looking for something really, really good, but also extremely dark and depressing, I recommend Ushijima the Loan Shark. All TV series and 2 of the 3 movies are on Netflix Japan.
Good stuff, but I don't think I can recommend binge watching it because of how hard it hits.

Hey I never said he was a traditionally good man. But it wouldn't be as entertaining if he was.

Man I need to rewatch it someday. The dance scene with Perfume, Flower Companyz when he's in the nightbus... so good

Holy shit Moteki was awful. This was like watching someone play a dating VN and make all the wrong choices, not the funny ones, or the mean ones, just the wrong ones.

...I'll check out the movie tho

Million Yen Women is recent, great and pretty easy to watch (Netflix). Give that a go?

Bit of a random thought but does anyone know the status of that Netflix drama based on Jimmy Onishi's life? I remember there being a placeholder for it a while back (along with the FF XIV drama before it released) but haven't seen anything since.

I LOVE that netflix is starting to bring more and more jdrama outside of Japan. I've been jealously looking at the kpop catalogue grow and it's great to see jdrama starting to show up as well
