Are the previous seasons of Lupin required for the new series? I have only watched the movie about the castle. I am thinking of watching this new series weekly until I watch some other animes that I left in the backlog then watching the rest of Lupin. Is that possible or I have to watch the other ones?

I watched Lupin 2015 without having seen anything else before and enjoyed it a lot. I'm waiting for a dub of this one so I haven't tried it yet but it is most likely the same.

I was just watching School Rumble after getting over Tenma's mess and I am enjoying it. Harima was just great.

Will have to watch this too as well as I loved the humor in School Rumble.

Maybe they were going for the Japanese word "mange"! …Wait, that's still NSFW.

In other news, somehow holidays (especially things like Easter weekend when I spend lots of time with family) always manage to screw up my viewing schedule and make me fall behind on anime and this thread. But I finally managed to catch back up for the moment, so here's my quick catch-up impressions for the end of last season and the beginning of the new one!

Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens 12 END

That was a satisfyingly flashy little operation to go out on. Also the one killing in the series that actually felt like it had some real weight to it. Fun series overall.

Darling in the FranXX 12

Feels like we're getting closer and closer to figuring out both what exactly Zero Two's deal really is, and what's really going on with this world. Next step: somehow stop Zero Two from going completely berserk >.>

Hakumei to Mikochi 12 END

As I said in my impressions for the very first episode, I was expecting we'd get some sort of "origin story" episode in this show at some point, and perhaps wisely, they saved it to cap off this season. It wasn't exactly the kind of origin story I was expecting (we didn't even see Hakumei and Mikochi's actual first meeting), but it was a sweet little story that tied closely into Hakumei's past, and felt like a satisfyingly meaningful note to finish on. Great to see that lock of hair still living on! =D

This show has grown on me so much as it went on, and has emerged as one of my lowkey favourites of the Winter. I would be super thrilled if it could get a second season at some point.

Sangatsu no Lion S2 - 21-22 END

omedetou hinachan

RIP hinachan hair

A super strong couple of final episodes that embodied basically everything great about this show. This felt like about as perfect a stopping point as you could possibly ask for, but fuck that, third season WHEN. I want to see lots of hinachan @ reischool.

Saiki Kusuo no Sainan S2 - 12

Okay, Saiki's Satou fanboyism is more amusing the more creepy-stalker it gets. He watches him on the toilet now. He measures how much toilet paper the guy uses!

Hugtto! Precure 9

Emiru is...pretty cute! If a little overbearing, lol. Though I kind of wish all the focus suddenly going to her would go to Kotori instead. Kotori is cuter! Why does she have to get upstaged by her own classmate?!

Anyway, the real star of the show is obviously Hugtan, whose adorableness is still the most powerful force in existence. Nobody is immune! Even Emiru was KOed immediately! And she even does the episode introduction now! Go go Hugtan!

Emiya-sanchi no Kyou no Gohan 4

The closest this show has come to making something that actually sounds appetising! But alas, I'm not a fan of egg. Nice to have a change of scenery once in a while, even if the comfy Emiya house is undoubtedly where the show's heart lies.

Uma Musume: Pretty Derby 1-2

This show seems like a super-solid production, which is always nice to see, and of course its concept of horsegirl-racer-idols is...certainly unique. That said, once you get past the basic concept, it doesn't feel like the show is doing much to stand out from similar cute-girls-doing-competitive-things shows. Maybe it doesn't need to. It's got enough energy to its execution that I'm sure it will at least be a fun watch. And the MC is extremely cute and genki, with a cute yuribait dynamic right off the bat with her reserved-but-sweet roommate. Can't complain.

Part of me wants to wonder how much excitement you can really get out of the actual sport itself when it literally just amounts to "who can run the fastest", but I know from experience that anime can make any sport exciting if it tries hard enough. And just in the first debut race we already had dramatic kicked-up-dirt-dodging that tied into Spe-chan's hilarious training with her mother. So yeah. And even if the races themselves do start to feel samey, there's always the idol performances to fall back on! XD

Uchuu Senkan Tiramisu 1

fucken lol

I'm not sure if this show is really my kind of thing, but it certainly did a great job here of immediately selling its basic concept of "ace mech pilot fails to deal with ridiculous mundane problems while in the cockpit saving the world". Will stick with it for another episode or two and see if it manages to keep up the entertainment value without getting old.

Also wow that's a lot of manservice for a seven-minute comedy show.

Mahou Shoujo Ore 1

OK, this has a lot of energy and charm and stuff. I just kind of...wish its gimmick didn't exist. Deliberately ruining cute character designs pains me, even if it is for comedy purposes. Wouldn't it be better if they just played the magical girl part straight like the dream sequence at the beginning? >.> Will see how it goes I guess...

Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi 1

I wasn't sure if this show was going to be really for me, since it seems to have a rather otome-leaning aesthetic, with the fairly generic female protagonist surrounded by pretty boys. But this first episode had enough charm that I'd like to at least give it a few episodes. The idea of a girl from the human world opening a restaurant for ayakashi who aren't familiar with human food has a similar appeal to something like Isekai Shokudou, so it could certainly be fun if the food side of things is well executed.

3D Kanojo: Real Girl 1

This feels like it should be a prime candidate to drop right off the bat - the production values are unimpressive all round, the "otaku gets a girlfriend" setup is hardly unique or original, and the character designs aren't even particularly attractive. But there was a certain straightforwardness about this first episode that was kind of endearing, so I'll stick with it for another episode or so.

Tachibanakan To Lie Angle 1

This feels like the most generic kind of fanservicey romcom, and honestly most of the girls aren't even that cute outside of the MC. I probably wouldn't even bother with it if it weren't for the yuri aspect. Then there's the ridiculously short episode length, which clearly isn't doing it any favours (is there any show that doesn't feel cramped with three-and-a-half-minute episodes?), but does at least mean it's not enough of a time investment to be worth dropping unless it turns out to be completely devoid of entertainment value ~.~

Alice or Alice 1

And here's another ridiculously short show! This one feels a little more suited to the episode length than Tachibanakan, what with the adorable chibi artstyle, the seemingly very limited focus and the 4koma-ish brief gags. But even a show like this still feels a little cramped in a measly 3-minute slot. Couldn't they at least make it seven minutes? Or even five?

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu: Die Neue These 1

I have no prior experience with this franchise, and don't really know much about it at all, so I figured this reboot might be as good a place as any to try jumping in. It doesn't exactly have a welcoming start though, jumping straight into a grand-scale battle between two of a trio of warring space nations, with no real background to explain why I should actually care about the characters or what's at stake here.

Military drama isn't exactly a genre I'm super fond of, but the gambits at play here are so far at least simple enough to be easily understandable but satisfying enough to watch, and this Reinhard fellow has plenty of charisma. I know the franchise as a whole is a well-regarded classic, so I'll stick with it for now and see if it's for me or not.

Not surprised but here it is.

New Violet Evergarden anime in the works.

Details later.

Noice!

Thank you for the info

I will watch the first episode and see if I will be lost or not. If I do get lost then I will go back and watch 2015.
I'm no expert so I can't tell you 2015 towers over the others or anything like that. But it seems like the most manageable since it is 26 episodes whereas the older shows have 100+ each I think. So regardless of whether the new one confuses you or not (I doubt it will), I recommend checking out 2015 when you have the time.

Collecting my thoughts on last season:

Completed:
Hellshake Yano
: AOTY
Overlord II: Boring first episode, Lizardmen arc was meh with some good moments towards the end, the remainder was pretty great.
Kokkoku: Very strong start, but it couldn't keep up the momentum throughout. I still liked it a lot, it does some interesting things with the concept of "stopped time" and went some weeeeird places. Wish it were a bit prettier.
Popteam Epic: it wasn't really "funny" funny, but the wild range of different and unique skits kept me entertainend throughout. Favorites were the songs, the AC-bu stuff, the stop-motion felt animation, the sand(?) animation and the real people skits
Devilman crybaby: It was good, but it wasn't really my thing.
B - The Beginning: I liked this a lot. Even though I can see its flaws, the moment-to-moment stuff was just so good that I can overlook them.

Dropped:
Violet Evergarden: 1st episode was good, 2nd was meh, 3rd was good and I couldn't make it through the 4th. I may give it another try sometime later.
Grancrest Senki: A horrible rushjob and butchering of the source material, dropped after 3 episodes.

Ongoing:
Darling in the FranXX: really uneven. I liked it up until Hiro became Zero Two's partner for real, after that it kinda fell apart. I liked the Goro episode and the last one, but rest has been meh.
Beatless: It does explore some interesting things about AI and has some cool action, but it feels too slow and some parts in the beginning are just plain stupid.
Fate/Extra Last Encore: I'm only up to 7 atm. I like it, but it doesn't really feel like something Fate and neither does it feel much like the material it's based on apparently.

No worries. I will definetly check out 2015 and maybe even the old series if it still holds up.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica 1-12 END
I'm glad I knew up front that this wasn't a traditional magical girl show or else I would have never watched it to begin with. If anything, the OP would have had me drop it outright if I didn't know the show would lead in some very interesting, dark places as it deconstructed the genre as a whole and what it really means to be a magical girl. While the focus on Madoka becoming a magical girl is central to the plot, I did not expect most of the show to revolve around other girls, their reasons for becoming magical girls, or even why the initially perceived antagonist Homura Akemi wanted to keep Madoka from becoming one in the first place. I expected her to join the Mami Tomoe early on and save the day with her new powers, but her and the progression of the other characters ending up making her transformation in the end far more meaningful and impactful.

The real genius of this whole series though is the cost of becoming a magical girl and the role of Kyubey in their creation as well as the nature of the witches these girls are tasked to fight. The slow realization that it does not have any one girl's best intentions in mind and feels that granting a miracle is enough to cover the cost of each girl's transformation. I'll spare the details here, but I did audibly say jesus fucking christ several times as things unfolded over the course of the series. Speaking of miracles, I enjoyed learning about each one, why they were made, and their actual impact on the characters that made them, with the realization that nothing is ever free and maintaining a sense of balance means equal parts good and bad must happen. These miracles and their consequences helped to tie in some of the darker themes for me without it being dark to the point of stupidity triteness.

The show is also visually striking, most notably all of the witches labyrinths and designs though I think the last one lacks some originality. The differences styles of art used for them along with how they tie into the nature of that witch in particular is rather interesting. That visual nature is actually what got me over the initial hump of the first episode.
I definitely recommend this to anyone even if they are normally put off by magical girl shows, though just be forewarned that it does keep in the one trope from magical girl shows I wish it didn't, even if it's only in the opening and in the final episode. Now I just need to watch all three films to see how this wraps up, though tbh I am fine with where things are left off at the end of this series.

Where can I watch Captain Tsubasa? Does anyone know if Major 2, Hisone to Masotan, Hinamatsuri, and Megalo Box have been picked up by anyone yet? These were the shows I was most looking forward to this season -_-

Crunchyroll just announced they picked up Megalo Box. I assume licensing for Hinamatsuri should be announced soon and Masotan will probably be announced closer to its air date, so like next week.

Viz is not streaming Tsubasa yet and I have no idea about Major 2.

Yah. I mean, Slice of Life might actually be my favourite anime genre, and I find that it can often carry a surprisingly strong emotional kick—I think the dedication to keeping things super chill most of the time really enhances the impact of otherwise mundane, ordinary events. The K-ON! graduation actually hits me harder than a lot of similar scenes in more dramatic anime, for instance.

For sure. I got into anime watching action and shonen stuff but now I look forward to SoL shows the most.

FINALLY

I swear if the video isn't full screen...

Special Week has two mommies. Also, Silence Suzuka is boring as hell. Very, very boring.

Viz has the license but they don't have any streaming plans for some reason.

Megalo Box will be on Crunchyroll. No word on the others yet.

That's some good news at least.

I'm tempted to sub to HiDive for LotGH only, but their simulcast and anime catalog is pretty sub-par besides that. I've been wanting to watch LotGH forever though, so I may bite for the $3.99 and now AppleTV app.

Also, creepy aside, but I'm a long time lurker (from even the other forum) and just wanted to say thank you to a lot of the frequent posters on here for entertaining me throughout the years. I'm the only guy I know that really watches any anime, so reading your opinions and recommendations on shows has been fun.

It refers to the fact that the real horse Special Week was raised by humans after the mother died 5 days SW was born.

Also your comment about Silence Suzuka is the worst! The worst!

I guess Silence Suzuka will get more development (she's one of the main characters) but her personality turns me off right now. Stoic characters work well when used the right way. The rest of the show is great though.

Only the Rebellion movie continues the story, other two are the anime condensed into movie form. Watch Rebellion ASAP

Do the films actually change anything about the story? I watched like the first 5 minutes of Rebellion and while the opening was cool, there were also characters there I didn't expect to see.

I have a sub with Crunchyroll, I was looking into VRV or whatever that's called to because it has a bunch of streaming platforms in one right? I watch mostly through AppleTV though, so that's why HiDive is calling me now. Angel Beats and Haikyuu are great!

I watched both the 12 episode anime for Madoka and the 2 recap movies and can confirm there are literally zero differences outside of better animation.

Rebellion was fucking excellent.

Finished Pop Team Epic.

The Bob Team Epic segments were terrible (kind of felt like the animated equivalent of a random shit post rather than a decent absurd joke) but other than that, genuinely funny and lovable show.

Popuko and Pipimi, the heroes anime needs. Kept waiting for them to attack/terrorize that generic anime thats teased at the end of every episode but alas, didn't come to pass.

Please don't tell me this entire season (I see that it's shorter) is devoted to the one game.
Yup. And I loved every second of it!

I skipped a few episodes in the second Seijoh match as well as the first because it's just too much time for one thing.
Smh. I get that we can all enjoy things however we want but also it's not like there's a reason to be in a rush. The after-match stuff isn't going anywhere, people to discuss it with aren't going anywhere.

don't stop watching movies after 5 minutes
Jeez...sorry. It wasn't my intention to stop and more that I realized I shouldn't have started a 2-hr film so late, if I had missed something from the previous two films, and even if I was watching the wrong film. I am by no means dropping it and plan on watching it this week. Maybe tonight.
